Mover and a Shaker, but Not Yet a Crawler
by Mama Hippo
D rolled from his front to his back the first time at about 4 months of age. Then he mastered rolling from his back to his front at about 5 months. Now, he has a pretty good hold of both, and although he's not crawling or even scooting yet, he seems to be managing to move around quite well.Just a few days ago he took a nap, and when I went in to check on him soon after he fell asleep, he was lying one way, with his head towards the wall. About 45 minutes later, I went to check on him again because he's usually awake by then, but he was still asleep and facing the other way. When I did hear him wake up, I went to get him and he'd rolled sideways a couple feet. I swear if he were in a crib, he'd be one of those babies constantly getting his arms and legs stuck in the slats.
He hasn't gotten much forward-backward movement going yet, but my guess is that's only a matter of time...

When did your kids learn to crawl? What came first - forward or backward movement?

my older daughter was backward first and my 2nd daughter was forward first
forward for my daughter. it was around 8.5 months or so.
My daughter learned at 7 months. She didn't scoot or anything first - just went straight to crawling. And she started by going forward.
Actually, she wanted to crawl so bad, that the 2 weeks before she learned were some of the most trying times in our house. She would get on all fours, reach for a toy, and scream when she couldn't get to it. It was horrible. I almost wish that she did some kind of scooting or rolling or something first! :)
My daughter went from rolling around and wiggling to get everywhere to overnight, literally, crawling on her hands and knees, forward, like a pro. I think she was right around 7 months. She does everything like that though. No practice or indications then overnight she is doing something. I guess she thinks it over in her head for a long time until she's got it down to try for real.
my son crawled forward without any practice first. He sort of did backwards a few days prior but he took off the first time he ever crawled. The same day unassisted sitting and going from sit to stand followed.
they didn't use their legs at first. none of them. then they learned to do both
my daughter started creeping at around 6 months. she can move several feet by all means, except crawling! it's quite a funny sight and an amazing feat!
she started crawling fwd all over the place at seven months. it's hard to keep up with her now!
