The Palace has announced that they are indeed expecting a baby. Congratulations to them, here's to a healthy and memorable pregnancy and many years of family fun!
But is this REALLY "breaking news"? Is CNN really covering this on their website as such? Local news stations fought to be the first to publish a story, and all the news article says is - "LONDON (AP) — Palace officials say Prince William and his wife are expecting their first child."
Please note that now these stories are being updated with more details as apparently Middleton is hospitalized due to severe morning sickness.
I can understand how this may be exciting for the royals and for those overseas, but what importance is it here in the United States?
Do you get excited about celebrity pregnancy announcements? Are they worthy of "breaking news" status?

"Prince William and Kate Middleton Really Are Pregnant"
HOLY BUCKETS THEY'RE BOTH PREGNANT!?!?!
This is being covered on the news channels in the United Kingdom, will no doubt be featured on both news breakfast programmes in the morning as well as the other news channels we have.
Yes I think it worthy featuring in the news.
Any famous person's pregnancy is never newsworthy in my book. They're having a baby. Just like all of the regular folks. We don't broadcast a non-celeb's pregnancy, why should we bother with a celebrity's pregnancy. Besides, I'm sure they would appreciate the privacy. I know they're part of the royal family, but even then, I feel their pregnancy should be private if they want it to be.
@QuantumStorm@xanga - If they both were I could certainly understand the breaking news bit. It's just a saying, many couples refer to being pregnant as a "we" thing, since it does take two.
@Mandi - I know, I was being facetious.
I am personally pretty excited. I am English though. We got a whole day off work for their wedding, that was pretty awesome. Maybe we will get a day off in honour of the birth of their child? It probably isn't breaking USA news but we have to pretend to be interesting somehow!
I feel bad for her. We'll get to hear all about whether or not she's
gaining enough weight...or God forbid she gains a lot of weight...we
get to hear about the unhealthy amount of weight she is gaining. She'll
be scrutinized for what she does or doesn't eat...so on and so forth.
It's intrusive and it isn't fair.
I really don't care that she is
pregnant. I am sure she is happy and excited. She deserves to enjoy
her pregnancy in private. I don't need to know the details about hers
or any other celebrities' pregnancies.
@QuantumStorm@xanga - Damn, that's exactly what I wanted to say!
No, I don't get excited about celebrity pregnancies. I just wanted to make a funny quip when I saw the title of this post and QuantumStorm ruined it for me.Honestly, I could care less about celebrity pregnancies. It's great for the expecting parents and their families and friends, but who are these people to me? Nobody. I just feel bad for those women in the lime light who get pregnant. The media puts so much emphasis on how much a mommy gains or if she's not gaining enough. They focus on what a mommy is eating or not eating, their lifestyle changes, etc. Let 'em alone!
@Erika_Steele@xanga - I agree that it is intrusive, congrats to them but I sincerely hope the headlines/news isn't filled with every moment of the pregnancy, that is way too stressful for someone who already has a stressful enough life, let alone being pregnant and dealing with it
Well, it's huge news in England. When this baby is born, they'll be third in line to the throne, regardless of gender. There's a new law coming into place that means the first born child of the King (or in William's case, future King) will be next in line to the throne. So if their baby is a girl, it will be Queen - the first time ever that a girl has taken priority over her younger male sibling (s) when it comes to being monarch.
After all these years of winning that war against a monarchy, the Brits are still paying up the nose to keep those people hanging around, being worshipped by the poor, who never had a chance to begin with. And consider this: Nancy Reagan took curtsying lessons before meeting the queen. Unbelievable.
No. Just, no. Celebrity, royalty, whatever, they're not doing anything that no other human has done in the history of forever. Why people are so obsessed over the mundane things that famous people do is beyond me.
@QuantumStorm@xanga -
It's hilarious and sad that you had to explain that.
@Pollypinks@xanga - they bring in much more income than they receive from our taxes. Each working person only pays around 26p for the royal family. Considering how much money they bring in to the country as a whole, that's not a bad price to pay.
You're just jealous because they didn't announce it on the news when you got pregnant.
I wish the British royal family went the way of the French or of the Russian Tsarist family.
No one elected them to leadership, and unlike shallow American pop stars and celebrities, William Harry and Kate didn't do fuck to deserve their attention.
News corporations are for-profit entities. Which means it's in their best interest to report what people want to be informed of.
Hmm... Maybe it IS breaking news, and THAT is the problem.
No it is stupid that we have to be bombarded about Kate being pregnant! So what! Who really cares. This is some family that is being upstaged and living on poor poeple's money so they get to parade about in luxury. The British must be really stupid to still keep this family!
I'm excited and happy about the news. Especially since I'm a huge fan of the royals! I kept seeing reports of this, but didn't know if it was true or not. Now I'm goning to surf the web to read all the stories.
Well, I'm Canadian, which is still technically under sovereignty, so to me it's pretty big news, yes. But I can see why in America it wouldn't matter. Still, it's big enough elsewhere that it will run all over your networks.
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - Mwahahaha
@chronic_masticator@xanga - I know right?
I wouldn't ever fight for the monarchy to remain in place, as it's not something I'm remotely passionate about...but part of me is happy there is still a real Prince/Princess out there. A bit of old world that has been preserved. Of course, I know it's not practical. Some nice things aren't practical.
Doesn't anyone realize she's not Kate Middleton anymore? She's the Duchess of Cambridge, isn't she? Middleton was her maiden name, and it's not used anymore. Yes, this is exciting because it pushes Harry further down the line to the throne :)
I think royalty is different from celebrity, even if it's royalty from a foreign country. Maybe especially if.
I'm guessing that you did not think it warranted a 'breaking news' status..
Have a wonderful day.
