  • Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a family holiday. My favorite memories of it were seeing the cousins that I hadn't seen all year (and playing around like maniacs for a day or two) and sitting around the kid's table eating the most delicious food, skipping the veggies (at the kid's table, no adults would know), and sneaking extra deserts.

We also always sat around the television and watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. It was magical to me when I was a kid. Maybe it was always this way, or maybe it really has changed, but I don't remember the planned stops and lip-synched performances. I prefer my child's memories of the parade. But my children still see the magic of it now, even if I don't. They are 6 and 3.

My Thanksgiving will be a little different this year. My husband serves in the U.S. Coast Guard and he will be on duty. We will go to be with him (provided that he isn't called away in an emergency situation) and eat Thanksgiving dinner served in his station's galley and prepared by the crew. It might not be traditional, but we'll make the best memories we can out of it. And I'll be thankful that my children and I get to be with my husband at all.

And hey, it means no work and no clean-up. BONUS! Another bonus? My mother flew down to be with us this year. It won't be so bad after all.

Where are you celebrating Thanksgiving this year?
