• Be the Cool Parent by Dressing Up for Halloween

  Halloween is the chance for everyone to dress up and have fun – not just the kids. You can create some positive family memories by dressing up with your children this season. Kids get an extra kick out of seeing adults show their silly side and it will make the holiday much more fun for all involved. Here are some ideas for making this a memorable Halloween: 

  Finding a Costume

  You can create your own costume at home or find kids and adult Halloween costumes online. When shopping online, you will access a bigger costume selection than if you go to local stores.

  If you choose to make your own costumes, you can use your clothes or purchase cheap clothing from a second hand store. You do not need to know how to sew. Scissors and special fabric glue can go a long way.

  Family Costume Ideas

  If your family consists of three people, consider going as the Three Musketeers, the Three Stooges, a hot dog with ketchup and mustard, three blind mice, three little pigs, and the three little kittens who lost their mittens or any other trio group that strikes your fancy.

  If you have several young children, you also have many choices. Go as the Munsters, the Addams Family, a fast food meal, shepherds and their lambs, lions, elephants, cats or any other animals you all enjoy.

  Science fiction lovers can dress up the family as aliens, robots or Star Trek characters. Alternatively, the parents can dress as the sun and the moon, and the children can all be stars or planets.

  For crazy fun, dad can go as a mad scientist, mom can go as his lab assistant and the children can go as his botched experiments. For this, you will only need a couple of lab coats, some fake body parts and perhaps some fake blood. Attach the fake body parts to funny places on the children -- stick an ear on their arm, eyeballs on the back of the head, a foot on the hip, for example. If you have a pet and will be taking a family photo on Halloween, do not forget to stick a body part on the pet as well. A human brain or a tiny doll arm might be funny.

  You could also make things creepier, if you are so inclined, and go as a zombie family – if you have teens, they will probably love that – or a spooky ghost family.

  Super heroes are fun costumes for the whole group, but if this is not exciting for you, consider dressing up as movie characters. If your kids are Harry Potter fans, Dad could be Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, or Rubeus Hagrid and mom could dress up as Minerva McGonagall, Sybill Trelawny, or Dolores Umbridge. If the kids start arguing over who gets to be Harry Potter, use a “sorting hat” to draw names. Alternatively, you could have more than one Harry Potter. The kids could all represent Harry Potter at different ages.
