  • How Fast They Grow: New Words

If there is one thing that warms my heart as much as it tugs at it, it's my son growing up. He is constantly learning brand new things each and every day. However, nothing is better then when he randomly comes up to me and says something new, something I haven't taught him.

The other day my sister (his aunt) had to have emergency surgery due to appendicitis. When Syrus got to speak with her on the phone after the surgery was over, you could have knocked me over with a feather when the words out of his mouth were "Hi! How you doing?" I know this is a very common phrase and he could have picked it up anywhere, but I just didn't know he knew exactly where and when to say it! He knew the proper application of a phrase. Of course, that could just be coincidence, but I'm not sure.

One thing that my husband and I did teach him however, was manners. We wanted him to learn to be polite to everyone he meets. So when he is given something, he'll look them in the eyes and say "thank you" really cutely, or he'll say "'muse me," meaning "excuse me," when he wants to get past someone.

I have to say, even though he is only two and still very young, I have an incredibly proud feeling. There's that warmth in my heart, that's my little boy! I know that there are many more of those proud moments to come. I honestly can't wait, but on the same token, wished he would stay small forever.

When have you been most proud of your children?

I'm most proud of my children when they apply the lessons my husband and I have taught them when we're not around to enforce them. For example, good manners. They know to say please, thank you, you're welcome and excuse me. All 3 of our children have this down to an art now, and it makes me so proud to hear them being so polite (and even more proud when others tell me how polite they are). My daughter just turned 6 this week, and she astounds me nearly every day with new words and applications. I honestly never know where she's learning all these new things, but it certainly makes me smile.
