I Heart Cloth
With my old Xanga name, MommyMarty22, I blogged a few times about cloth diapering. For the past 4 months we have held off on the cloth because we only have access to the washing machine once a week.
I am so missing cloth diapering!
It cost just as much as these discount Aldi brand diapers and were so much better for our son. I spent more mommy time with him. My daughter was even able to diaper him. It was a lot of fun. It's been 4 months too long and I have to re-stock my stash since ours were ruined. I left them in a plastic bag and I guess it was humid - mildew built up with condensation.Did any other moms have to give up cloth diapering do to lack of washing machine? How did y'all cope?

Hi, I don't have a washer, and I use cloth on my daughter for night time still. I hand wash with a washboard and wringer and it works well~ Before I hand washed we used cloth when she was little and I just put her diapers in a dry diaper pail (I rinsed the poopy ones.) and took them to the laundry mat 1 time a week , it worked good too! Hope this helps! Kim
I am curious about what you mean by spending more mommy time with your son because of cloth diapering? I will probably use cloth, I just don't understand how they would have enabled you to spend more or less mommy time with your son.
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - cloth diapering can be time consuming the rinsing, washing, hanging, folding, inserting and so forth with just disposables you change and throw away so i see how she spends more time with her family :) . i've never clothed diapered just dont have the time nor the want to do so :)
I can't relate but i give you props for doing it!!!!
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - I didn't old fashion cloth... I had a few of them... but i had pocket diapers and my daughter was able to help out folding and bonding with my son. I meant to put more mommy time with my son and daughter together. lol For some reason she was more interested in it when the diapers were cloth. (Musta been all the crazy colors we had.)
@sailing5@xanga - You know what this is actually very helpful and I'm thinking about it. I did it for a little while then my honey said we should just take a break till we move. I'm trying to convice him to save up a few bucks for a stash of sunbabys.
I gave up cloth diapering my son when we moved and didn't have a washer anymore. Luckily he potty trained a few months later, but I HATED disposables. This time around I had a washed until about a month ago, and I'm due in a few weeks. But I made a barter agreement with my friend across the street to use her washer. I sooo do not want to use disposables again, at all.
I hate disposables, but I don't have kids so that's really just throwing out my two cents.
I guess there's some annual challenge about using older style cloth diapers and not being allowed to use a washing machine to wash them. You have to hand wash them or get creative with a plunger and bucket or something. You may want to look into it, I'm sure you could find some ideas for how to make it work.
If you have any old sheets you don't use, or large t-shirts that don't get worn, you could cut those up and turn them into flats to help get you through until you can re-build your supply. Or if you sew, there's a lot more you could do with them.
It's simple math. $3000.00 minimally saved with cloth. Having said that, I babysit my year old grandson, and they bring me disposables, so that's what I use. I do find that even with frequent changes, occasionally I have anal soreness when he's had loose stools, and that's come from dealing with lactose intolerance, and having to give him juice with his formula. I used cloth with mine and did not mind one bit. I cannot believe the cost of disposables, and the savings account someone could start for a child just by using cloth. But to each his own. I also had a washer and dryer, and did one small load a day, so it was easy.
Oh man, I've had a diaper mildew on me, it stinks :( I love using cloth!! I had to use 'sposies on my son while I stripped our diapers (mineral/det. build up) and the stink was so horrible! If you're not already a member of DiaperSwappers, I highly suggest you check it out! I know several moms there wash only weekly so they could help out in that area. Also you could try the FSOT board to help rebuild the stash.
If I were you I would just get flats or flour sack towels, they're really cheap and wash up so easy! Pad folded they're just as absorbent as MF. You could even still use pockets, most places will sell the shells at a cheaper price (covers would be easiest imo) I saw up in the comments you mentioned sunbaby, if I remember right you get 6 shells for $60? Just rinse out the poopy diapers with a diaper sprayer, then hand wash, and if you have space to do so hang dry outside in the sun :) Good luck mama, hope you can find a solution!!
Thanks everyone for the tips :D
