Baby's Life Saved by Toy-Sized Magnets

We've seen the recalls: toys that have magnets which might dislodge or are just so small a child might swallow them. The risk? The magnets can attach to each other at different parts of the bowel and bore a hole through the intestinal wall separating them. It can be a deadly situation. But this is the scenario and the concept that surgeons in Salt Lake City used for inspiration on how to save a baby boy's life.Patrick and his twin brother were born premature. He also had rectal atresia, a blockage that totally prevents bowel movements. But weighing only 4 lbs, Patrick was too small for the surgery they usually performed for this condition.
Eventually, his surgeon, Dr. Eric Scaife, connected the problem they needed to correct for Patrick and the accidental harm that came to some children after swallowing toy magnets. So they went shopping at Toys-R-Us and other toy stores to find an appropriately sized magnet that was also strong enough to do what it was supposed to. They ended up, however, ordering their magnets online.
Using x-rays, Scaife and a radiologist (the doctor who works in radiology) performed the procedure. "We just dropped the magnets in like coins into a slot, and they immediately clicked together."
It took a few days, but the magnets did their job. The intestinal membrane between them was pinched thin until the blood supply was lost and all that was left was a thin membrane. A week later, the surgeon removed the magnets. A sufficient pathway had been created without further bowel injury, and Patrick could safely have bowel movements.
He is now a healthy 3 year old.
You can read the whole story here.
Can you imagine shopping at Toys-R-Us to try and save your child's life? I will honestly never look at those little magnets the same ever again.

Interesting story. I am glad the little boy is alive and that he had a super creative doctor.
AWESOME creativity on the doctor's part!! Sometimes the simplest of things can trump science.
Wow, it's amazing how the things we consider little and simple can become life savers! Magnets, never thought they could be used to save a child's life.
Good post!
I remember hearing something about this on the local news when it happened since I live in UT. This is such a cool story!
If magnets can clear blockages, I wonder what they might do next. That's really thinking outside the box.
That's a real doctor! Thinking and trying to solve a problem, not just spewing bureaucratic nonsense. I'm glad people like that are out there.
@Manic_Butterflies@xanga - I agree! You couldn't have said it better.
This is SO cool! I wish more doctors were willing to get creative with saving someone's life, but I know medical malpractice suits have been making that almost impossible. Damn sue-happy people..
That is crazy, and so neat!
@Orlei@xanga - they also get rid of headaches
@angelwingfive@xanga - he may have had a background in polarity which is a type of massage that deals with magnetic points in the body you can use magnets or your own body for.
@Shadowshif@xanga - They sure as heck never got rid of my headaches.
@sarahsmurfette@xanga - they never got rid of my mom's either. it's supposed to work with your energy field. If you have too much energy at the top of your head, you can always pull it down my holding your toes. That's why they usually put them in bracelets or anklets.
It's weird I've done energy massage and have found it to work but i never understood polarity so i'm not much help with magnets and positives and negatives.
