Find Out If You're Pregnant - In a Bar!

Tom Fredrik says, "It took about 30 seconds to say yes" to installing a pregnancy test dispenser to his Minnesota pub women's bathroom. The idea is to encourage early pregnancy detection in order to prevent prenatal exposure to alcohol. The tests are $3 each. You just swipe your card in the dispenser, pick your test, and make your merry way to the stall. This is a part of the Think Before You Drink Initiative. Their website states, "If a mother knows she is pregnant by her 18th day of the pregnancy and stops drinking alcohol from that time on, the growing fetus will not have any damage from prenatal exposure to alcohol."
Shortfalls of this method are that some women early in their pregnancies only test positive with blood testing, and some early pregnancies aren't detectable at all. But could the majority of women benefit? So tell us, what do you think? Would you consider using one of these tests? Do you think this will help prevent fetal alcohol syndrome? Will this idea catch on?

@LondonsMommy - There were a few cases on "I didn't know I was pregnant" where the mother drank her entire pregnancy not knowing she was pregnant, and their babies have no affects from the mothers habits
it's a good idea. but i find it kind of sad that there are women out there who need a pregnancy test THAT immediately. two words: birth control.
@DarkMeru@xanga - Seriously, I dropped at least $20 on a package of 2 tests...guess next time I'll just head to the bar. $3 test
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - I don't know if someone responded to you already or not, but the most important trimester of pregnancy for FAS is the first one. That's when the effects are the most damaging.
I think its a great way to encourage safe sex as well! I mean think about it - a decent percent of unwanted pregnancies and the spread of STDs can be attributed to a drunken night. You pick someone up in a bar, or you get drunk and go home to someone. In your euphoric sexual alcohol induced haze wearing everything you are supposed to wear may not seem like that big a deal right? But it damn sure will after you've stared at a pregnancy test (nightmare of young/single sexually active girls everywhere) in your pre-cab loo run.
This is actually kind of brilliant. Not only is it cheaper than Walmart, but hopefully will make people think. I mean, you'll pass by it every time you go to the loo, so you'll have to kind of acknowledge it. Hopefully it will be one of those things that gets lodged in your mind & continues to burn. I have known people who think they're pregnant but wait to take a test until after they've had their night out. Maybe stepping into the bathroom & seeing this will be enough of a guilt trip.
& if not, horray for cheap pregnancy tests! Lol
@ilusqwishy@xanga - I saw that! They were very lucky. I think about how much I worried over everything when I was pregnant, and these women unknowingly put their baby at risk then they are fine! Crazy..
@belldingding@xanga - So they should put a condom dispenser next to it. HAHAHA!
I guess its a good idea. I dont think women who think they are pregnant should be going into a bar in the first place though..... Also, aren't those not all accurate all the time as well?
@LadyGwenivere@xanga - Sounds like some girl I know... That I used to live with.. Ok, I do smoke weed once in a while, but I actually caught her (while pregnant) stealing some of mine. I have no problem with drugs and stuff that other people do. It's their own lives BUT to bring an unborn child into it? Not a good idea at all... I believe in Texas if you are found with drugs in your system while pregnant, it's a felony. I think thats a good idea.
@ilusqwishy@xanga - It really depends I guess... My mom apparently smoked cigarettes the entire time she was pregnant with me. I am lucky I dont have asthma, but I do have some things wrong with me that could or could not be from that. It's best to just not take those risks :) You'd think people would care about their kids not wanting to even risk something like that o.O
Fantastic!
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - they call it FASD (Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) now and FAS is just a part of it.. and yes, the baby can be affected as early as 2 months into the pregnancy (my dear friend adopted a FAS baby and the birthmom stopped drinking 2 months in, she had to she was in jail). Although I am sure it happens earlier.
No amount of alcohol while pregnant is a good idea. Some babies might be fine, some might be severely affected... Its just not worth the risk.
I like this idea. It's discreet. It allows some women to make proper decisions. It is a little odd, I will admit, and I don't think a bar is a place that I would want to find out that I was pregnant at. I don't go to bars though. I don't drink alcohol so there's no need for me. It might be good for those women that do go to bars. It might also be good for those women that don't want to go to the local convience store, get the test, take it home, and all that. It would be better to do it at home, just because the test is more effective after you wake up in the morning, but this is a nice option.
