  • Find Out If You're Pregnant - In a Bar!

Tom Fredrik says, "It took about 30 seconds to say yes" to installing a pregnancy test dispenser to his Minnesota pub women's bathroom. The idea is to encourage early pregnancy detection in order to prevent prenatal exposure to alcohol. The tests are $3 each. You just swipe your card in the dispenser, pick your test, and make your merry way to the stall.

This is a part of the Think Before You Drink Initiative. Their website states, "If a mother knows she is pregnant by her 18th day of the pregnancy and stops drinking alcohol from that time on, the growing fetus will not have any damage from prenatal exposure to alcohol."

Shortfalls of this method are that some women early in their pregnancies only test positive with blood testing, and some early pregnancies aren't detectable at all. But could the majority of women benefit?

So tell us, what do you think? Would you consider using one of these tests? Do you think this will help prevent fetal alcohol syndrome? Will this idea catch on?

How clever! I have to admit, I have stopped by the store a couple times on my way to have a drink, just to make sure. This would have been so convenient!

i think its a good idea... but I know 2 teen girls (15 and 17) right now who are pregnant and haven't stopped drinking or drugs. and they don't care because, as both have stated "just cuz some guy got me knocked up doesn't mean im going to stop having fun" ... I pray for those innocent little babies.

I don't know. I don't think I would use one, maybe because I don't drink much anyway. Will it prevent fetal alcohol syndrome? I hate to be negative, but I don't think so.

I'm not well-versed in fetal alcohol syndrome, but don't most cases happen because of drinking that occurred after the mother already knew she was pregnant? How many cases of fetal alcohol syndrome really occur that early? That's the question that has to be answered before we can gauge how effective this could be. Nevertheless, it's a good business move and encourages responsibility. I give this a thumbs up, if not for the same reasons that are cited in this article.

That's how I found out.   I wanted to go out one night, picked up a test and my plans changed.

I don't know how helpful this will be. I think it might help some but if someone is addicted to alcohol they aren't going to stop just because they are pregnant. It is so important to completely abstain from alcohol while pregnant because not only is there FAS but there is also fetal alcohol effect which is a lot harder to diagnosis.

lol i would go to a bar just to buy a couple tests.  $3.00 is crazy cheap in stores its like $8.00 for a decent test. I have not had a drink in a couple years even then it was only a drink every few months.  My husband and i planned our daughter so we we didnt drink for a few months before we started trying.  As far as FAS goes its preventable entirely and this could help some women and babies for sure.  FAS is a risk pregnant woman take when they drink half a glass of wine in the third trimester is probably not an issue.  Early on i think drinking anything is a terrible idea thats when babies little organs, nervous system, eyes, brain, and everything are developing why would anyone want to throw alcohol in with that process.  When a mother chooses to drink excessively during pregnancy im all for them being locked up, yes its their body but doesnt the unborn baby have a right to be healthy?  I cant stand to see a pregnant woman smoke or drink it makes me sick to my stomach.  Being a mother i just dont get how any addiction is more important than your child, wether you plan to be the mother or not the baby deserves to be healthy.

My first pregnancy test was 99cents. It was just because my boyfriend told me "you know you're pregnant right" when i was going off on him one day. So the next day he brought it home for me. And it came out possitive. So i don't think it matters how Cheap the test is. I do honestly think it's a great idea.

  • rara_avis21@xanga

actually, yeah i do think this is a good idea - and also for some people who don't have the money that is cheap for tests and also doesnt mean going to a store and buying one.

if it raises awareness and changes attitudes then great..

Almost everyone I know happened to get drunk or have a few drinks right before they found out they were pregnant including me and im not a huge drinker and their kids were fine. Alcohol doesn't affect the baby very much until the placenta develops, which is well after most people find out. One night out very early in pregnancy probably won't harm baby

  • VampireOfSeduction@xanga

@leahKtutu@xanga - Same as what happened to my friend.

    I'm cool with the idea.

@WaitingToShrug@xanga - That's what I was thinking. The babies who are born with FAS are that way because the mother didn't care. Unless they were on "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" and went nine months not knowing, lol!

  • Manic_Butterflies@xanga

I drink pretty frequently, and I can imagine how for some people, this would be a good idea.
But it also kinda sucks...you really want to find out at a pub in the bathroom stall? If you think you might be, you'd probably want to take a test in your own home before you go out drinking, am I right?

  • wastedbeauti@xanga

I think this is a brilliant idea and I hope it catches on. Although I don't know how many women will actually think "Oh, a pregnancy test. I should make sure I'm not knocked up before I start off Thirsty Thursday..." it's certainly the most private way to purchase a test! Some people simply hate the awkwardness (and inevitable comment or "joke" from the Walgreens cashier, in my experience) of buying pregnancy tests. Even if they don't take the test right that second, finding out you're pregnant sooner rather than later is definitely a good thing. If having pregnancy tests in bar bathrooms will facilitate that, I'm all for it.

I think it's a good idea in theory, but how many women are actually going to walk into the bathroom and think about testing themselves for pregnancy? I also wonder what percentage of the women who do purchase a test and take it will receive false negatives due to the pregnancy hormone not showing up. Maybe this is just my experience, but when I was pregnant with my second child, I took 4 at home pregnancy tests and they all came back negative because I tested too early. It took a blood test at the hospital nearly 2 weeks later to confirm that I was pregnant. There are also the women out there who just don't care or are in denial.

  • tjlittlegirl@xanga

I think this is a good idea, smart.

  • sarahsmurfette@xanga

What if they offered it in the girl's bathroom at school?

  • Face_Of_Innocence@xanga

@DarkMeru@xanga - The Dollar Tree has them for a dollar.

  • immoral_sensei@xanga

Also the cheaper ones tend to work better than the more expensive ones. I have done a lot of research in to the subject and most of my sources say the less expensive ones are better because less things that cause interference with the test results, but nothing beats a blood test from a good doctor.

  • sarahsmurfette@xanga

I personally did not like the Dollar Tree tests. Because of two reasons: 1. You have to pee in a cup and use a little dropper to drip your urine onto the test. 2. Maybe i had bad luck, but out of the 3 I used, 2 came up invalid.

They are not user friendly at all, if you ask me. I'm sure if you test a lot, you would eventually get used to it and have your own little system with the dropper etc. But for just a "lets check and see" moment...those tests sucked in my opinion. It was messier to boot.

  • wretched_epiphany@xanga

    My mind is blown.

I've seen breathalyzers in bars, I've seen condom machines in bars.......but pregnancy tests?! I don't know how I feel about that lol.  Not because women shouldn't make sure they aren't pregnant BEFORE they get drunk, but because it's just funny to try and picture seeing it inside the bar lol.

  • LipstickStainedCoffeeCups@xanga

I wonder how many drunk women will stumble into the bathroom and buy a pregnancy test just for shits and giggles? I'm sure that will be the case more than, "oh, I should check if I'm pregnant before I start drinking...". Damn this company stealing drunk girls money!

  • randaness@xanga

I like this idea. I'd rather go to a bar to buy my pregnancy test than the store, because you might run into someone you know at the store. And, if you're not pregnant, you can celebrate because you're already at the bar!
