  • Using Incentives To Get Baby Moving {Video}

    We love our cute and cuddly babies that we can rock in our arms, but for some reason we are so quick to try and get them moving! Have we forgotten that once they are mobile they are into everything? Nothing is safe once baby starts to crawl and then walk!

    Watch this cute clip of a baby going after a Popcicle.

    What incentives did you use to get your baby rolling, crawling, and walking?

    I was in no rush for my kids to get moving. I never did understand why people rush babies into eating solid food/crawling/walking/wearing shoes, etc. My stepdad was forever bugging me about feeding them solids and making them wear shoes all the time.

    lol, ok, I may be guilty of encouraging my son to cruise around the furniture with cheerios....But it is summer and it would be so much easier on his hands and knees if he could walk outside instead of crawling!

    I agree with the first poster.  My son rolled over, crawled, walked, ran etc. when he was ready.  LOL.  I can imagine what my son would have done if I tried that with him.  He would have looked at me like whatever, mom if you don't want to give me the popsicle, I have better things to do and he would have found something better to do.

    It seemed as if everyone close to our family was constantly bugging us about why our kids weren't doing something that they apparently should have been doing at certain ages. This bugged the crap out of me because they actually expected me to answer them! One person caught me at a bad moment, and I sort of snapped at her. She asked why my youngest (who was 7mo old at the time) wasn't crawling yet. I said: "He crawls all the time, we just tell him not to when we're around others because we enjoy being pestered by everyone and their dog!" In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have freaked out at the woman, but a person can only take so much lol.

    All of my kids developed skills when they were ready. We'd lend them a hand and encourage them when they were getting close to figuring something out, but never really pushed them or used any incentives. When my oldest child was about 9mo old, she was so close to crawling. She could get up on her hands and knees and rock, but had yet to move forward. I sat down on the floor in front of her one afternoon while I was eating a snow cone. I had been giving her little tastes, and then, she crawled to get more. I wasn't really enticing her, but she came to me, well, the treat, just the same! To be perfectly honest, I was soooo not ready for my third child to be mobile, and liked that he didn't start crawling until he was 10mo old. My 3 kids are 3 1/2 years apart (the boys are just shy of 13mo apart), so you can imagine how hectic and chaotic things are in our house!

    It happens when it happens for good reasons, and every baby is unique.  Doesn't mean one is brilliant because he crawls earlier, or, talks sooner.  I don't think putting pressure on them makes the process go any faster.  Mine are in their 30's, and it never occurred to me to push them into making the next move.  Let's face it, nobody goes to school in diapers, and they can all have conversations with you by then as well.  The one exception here is that it is proven to be an excellent learning factor to read to your baby.  And when they get a little older, say two, have self creative toys, like big t.v. boxes to play in, and color, rather than a constant garage of videos and electronic gadgets.  And Baby Einstein was proven in studies at the University of Washington to actually slow verbal learning.  They're great for entertainment, and keeping little ones occupied, but they had to remove the word "learn" from their cover.

             My baby girl has done everything at her own pace, she tends to want to chace the cats around so thats pretty much what has taught her to roll, crawl, and pull herself up and sidestep along the couch.

    I dont have a baby but I think that we should let them grow naturally, I mean dont force them dont be hurry...let them experience something new by their own. Then they can walk gradually because they can learn from their previous experience. They should learn to fall down, finally they can walk.

    I wouldn't want to feed my baby a Popsicle and get them hooked on unnecessary sugar at a young age.

    I guess we all want reassurance that our babies are reaching their milestones, so we push them, lol. But really they aren't going to do anything before they're ready, no matter how much you try. If they are not physically or mentally capable then all the practice in the world won't help. However, I do think we should give them "incentives" to crawl. It just shows them that there is something across the room and makes them want to wiggle over there. If everything was always in their reach would they want to crawl away..? Hmm..

    @LupusInvictus@xanga - I know what you mean! My daughter just started walking in August. All summer I wish she had been able to walk because she'd crawl away outside and just go right over sidewalks and concrete and not even flinch! That has to hurt!
