• Craft Project: Handprint Dough

  

  We were bored today. After so much time being spent at the lake, a day inside at home can get to be long. But we needed a break from the hot sun. It was in the 90's today. So hot, hot, hot! Anyhow, you can only clean so much. I found a project to do. We have not done handprints since 2009 so that is what we did. 

  These (in the pic) still need to dry and have a clear coat put on. 

  For this project (and it will give you a lot of dough like what you see above) you will need:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt 
  • 1 1/2 cups plus a little extra, water 
  • food dye
  • black paint 
  • paint brush 
  • permanent marker 
  • sting or ribbon 
  • clear coat
  • 100 grit sand paper

  Mix all together (I used my KitchenAid) and then split apart in the colors you want. It is easier to mix colors in by hand. Then you just roll the colored dough out. I used a plate for sizing. I took a child's plate and the oldest child and made sure her hand would fit in the square. I used the plate as a giant cookie cutter. Then allowed the kids to use the extra as play dough and made little things they can put on the dresser. Anyhow once rolled and cut place child's hand in the dough and press firmly down.
  
  Cut two small holes for hanging if you wish. Another option would be to super glue ribbon on the back once it is dry.
  
  Place on cookie sheet bake in oven at 300 F. for about 20 mins. Watch them. You want them to get just dry enough, but not too dry or they will start to bubble. Once they are done in the oven gently remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack.
  
  Let dry for at least 4 hours before you paint them.
  
  Gently sand the edges. Write their name and date on them and follow-up with black paint, being careful to only paint the impression. I only had black spray paint (I did not want to go out) so I carefully sprayed it onto a few paper plates and used a paint brush. I had to move rather fast but I love that you can make out the kid's finger prints.
  
  At 24-48 hours apply a clear coat for extra protection and extra shine. Allow to dry according to can. And then place ribbon and hang. 

  That is it. It was fun and the kids love it! It was really cool to see Ty compare his feet to the one we did in 2009 when he was a tiny baby.
