Mommas! I would greatly appreciate any feedback or advice on how to deal with my hair loss. It was so amazing to not lose hair during my pregnancy as I've always had really thin hair. I loved not having to clean the hair net in my bathtub and experience thick hair for the first time in my life!
Now my hair is everywhere!
I feel so bad for my husband and even the baby. My hair is all over our home -in his crib, on the changing table, on the floor and once (I'm so sad to admit this) I found a hair in the baby's diaper!

I'm vacuuming everyday, multiple times a day. I also always wear my hair in a ponytail, but I wonder if that makes the hair loss worse. When I pull out the hair tie to take a shower tons of strands of hair come out with the tie. It literally hurts my head and heart to see all the hair come out.
Any other mommas experience postpartum hair loss? How long did it last for you? I've been experiencing the hair loss for about a month but at this rate I'll have no hair in two months!

Well, I've always lost a moderate amount of hair, but it was definitely worse for about 4-5 months after my pregnancy. At 9 months it is back to the way it used to be! One of my strands actually got wrapped around the baby's toe when he was a few months old - it cut off his circulation and there was a mark there for weeks!
I went through the exact same thing. My hair was everywhere! It eased up after a few months and by about 6 months it was back to normal. It may seem like a long time of hair loss, but it'll start to slow down soon.
During pregnancy women don't shed. Pregnant women usually have very thick hair. After childbirth a new mother will shed about 9 months worth seemingly all at once. This is normal.
I agree that its normal and will slow down soon. I know its frustrating, but I promise it will stop
I don't think it ever ended. But not to fear... all that seeming extra abundance probably is just that. I have thin hair too and loved how my hair thickened up during pregnancy due to the hormones. You won't go bald, your hair will just return to it's normal state.
You might consider getting your thyroid checked. Postpartum hair loss is normal, but it can also be caused by postpartum thyroiditis which would need to be treated.
Think about it like this: You didn't lose any hair while you were pregnant, because there are hormones or something that keep it in. I forget what it's called, but most women seem to experience fuller, thicker hair while they're pregnant... Afterward, those hormones goes away and all the hair you DIDN'T lose while pregnant starts coming out. You won't go bald... you'll kinda just go back to something close to your pre-pregnancy state. It happened to me too, with all three of my kids. That's one of the reasons I ended up getting my hair cut fairly short after my son was born. His little hands kept getting tangled in hair. :(
I don't think you'll go bald, think of it like bears in hibernation. Momma bear starts to shed old hair that she's kept throughout the whole winter. :) You'll be fine, and if you're not convinced, don't worry because luckily in the 21st century, we have hair growth stimulating products and surgeries, nothing is unsolvable. Hope this helped.
my hair shed started a couple weeks ago. this is baby number four and I know its annoying but it will end. I need to remind myself of that too. I think between 6-9 months post partum it stops. there really is nothing you can do about it :( sorry!
@LupusInvictus@xanga - Thanks for the feedback! I read about how you strands of hair can get wrapped around baby's toes and fingers and even his private area! :( Crazy how that can happen!
@Morbid_Whisper660@xanga - Thanks so much for the feedback! It sounds like 6-9 months of hair loss is the average. I'm glad to know it slows down! I think I must be experiencing (or I hope) the worst of it now. I can't touch my hair without at least 10 strands falling. :P
@romic@xanga - I'm so glad that other mommas have experienced this and it's normal. I have so few friends that have kids that my friends are so freaked out by my hair loss. hehe Thanks so much for the encouragement!
@JstNotherDay@xanga - It would be so awesome to retain the awesome hair of preggo days! ;) I miss it for sure!
@keystspf@xanga - After I read your comment yesterday I decided to get a much needed haircut of about 5 inches. It totally makes me feel better! And you're right about little fingers getting into my hair. I think my son's new favorite hobby is pulling my hair. ;)
Btw, that's so awesome you have 3 kids! I would love to have 3 kids one day. How old are your little ones?
@GodsDucks@xanga - 4 kids! Amazing momma! Where I live (in NYC) it's so rare for folks to have more than 2!
Thanks for the feedback! Actually it sorta makes me feel better knowing there's nothing I can really do to prevent the hair loss. I feel like because no one I know has experienced this I was some sort of anomaly. ;)
@eugenia@xanga - I am 34. My oldest son will be 13 next month. My middle daughter will be 12 in August. My youngest just turned 10 in March. I wouldn't trade them for anything, but I definitely don't want more. LOL
I'm nine months postpartum... My hair is starting to grow back and thank God!!! It started to become noticeable and was so embarrassing....
Yes I found hair in the diaper too >.<
You'll know your hair is growing back when you have all these short stubbs of hair that just fuzz up and wont go back with the rest of it. lol (I hat that just as much. Look's like baby hair.)
Ever since I've been pregnant, it got really thick. Thicker even more with the second pregnancy. It's still mega-thick (and unruly! and curly!) and I still lose TONS of hair. My youngest is nine years old. I am not balding anywhere and still losing handfuls in the shower. I just make sure to put one of those drain screens in and clean it out after each shower, and empty the hairbrush into the toilet. I don't even worry about it any more, it's my new normal.
I am going through the same thing right now. It was like clockwork. They say it happens around 12 weeks postpartum and I think at 12 weeks and 1 day I noticed clumps of hair coming out.
I have thin hair too so it's sad to see the thickness go away.
For me, I have a friend who is going through chemo and today her hair started falling out. Hers will be completely gone in a few days.
It puts everything into perspective, doesn't it? We complain about losing SOME hair and she'll be losing ALL of it in just a matter of days. After seeing her pull some hair out this morning I have made a vow to not complain anymore.
@eugenia@xanga - I was just taking a shower and realized I should tell you about this shampoo I found. I'm losing more hair again, due to the imminence of menopause looming, and I started to get worried about being one of those old balding ladies. lol Anyway this shampoo really does seem to inhibit the shedding and give my hair a more full-bodied look. Of course some of that is due to the gray... I've always had poker straight hair but the grays are more wiry... unless that is due to follicle damage from so many years of hair pulling... haha, but I digress. This shampoo had good reviews from everyone who tried it, so I tried it. Go to Iherb.com and the shampoo is called Avalon Organics thickening shampoo, Biotin B-complex therapy. You can read all the reviews there. Maybe you'll want to give it a try. I'd like to know if you do and how it works for you. Good luck.
Healthier than doing perms I'd say, which destroy the hair. My hair stays nice and soft.
@keystspf@xanga - I second that emotion. lol It's how I felt too after number 3. Loved the number 3 though. Those years of raising them were great years. Mine are grown now.
@JstNotherDay@xanga - Thanks for the rec! This shampoo looks really good and the reviews are pretty solid. It's actually cheaper than the shampoo I've been using for my thinning hair too! Thanks Momma!
Well, I suppose wearing a hairnet to cover your scalp for now would be the best solution until the shedding stops. Definitely don't tie up your hair because it's just pulling at your scalp more. Aesthetics-wise, you can wear a wig on top of the hair net. Congratulations on being a mum though!
