Here is peace of mind for all parents (especially parents of toddlers):
GE Magnetic Window Alarms. They can be bought at Lowe's, Amazon, etc - they're widely available.
Put these suckers on the doors of your house, and if little hands figure out how to open a door, you'll know it. The alarm is loud enough to wake you from sleeping and loud enough that you can probably hear it even from the shower (I can at my house).
No more scary stories of little ones escaping and disappearing or getting into roads. They are around $10 for a pack of two, the batteries are included and they just stick right on your door. Awesome. All parents should get this.

Oooh never knew such a thing existed, if I can't find any in NZ I might have to buy some off that site! Thanks for posting :)
We put these on the doors that lead to our pool - along with a hotel-type security lock at the top of the door.
Oh, fantastic! Thanks for sharing this! Our 1-year-old has demonstrated this week that she understands the concepts of doorknobs AND locks. Thank goodness she can't make them work yet, but she'll figure it out.
Good to know about these. Thanks.
My cousin needs this she has 5 boys and a girl who's 2 or 3 who's escaped down the road to a local mill on at least 6 occasions.
