  • Birth Story: Welcome Baby Genevieve!

On March 22., 2011 at 9:00 am. was my 38 week and 1 day appointment with my OB. Once I arrived I was given a Non Stress Test at 9:20 am.. it checks for contractions, fetal heart beat and fetal movement. She was either moving too much or too little. When she was real active the machine would loose her heartbeat and movements and we would have to start over, or she would get real still and not move and again we would have to start over if she didn't move so many times in 5 minutes. It normally only takes 15 minutes tops for the baby to pass.

My Dr. came in periodically to check the progress and noticed I was having contractions that were over 100 every 5 minutes. He asked me if I felt them and I told him no they just felt like strong Braxton hicks contractions (practice contractions I've been having since 18 weeks). He came in at 10:15 am. and asked if his two nursing students could come in while he check me for dilation since I was having contractions every 5 minutes. I said it was fine. He checked me and said your 4 cm. and he could feel her head! He said he was going to help things along by stripping my membranes which made me 5 cm. I was scared and happy! I had been waiting for this for 9 months, but didn't think I was going to hear it was time since I was in NO pain! He said to go straight to Labor and Delivery and he would meet me there shortly.

I left his office and got in my car at 10:30 am. I looked for my cell phone in my purse and realized I left it on the kitchen counter, ugh! I felt fine so I figured I would try and hurry home and get Gary and Ethan so we could all go to the hospital together. I got half way home and started to feel uneasy (contraction pressure, not pain) and turned around and went to the hospital. I walked through the ER at 10:45 am. and there was an older man who was a helper that greeted me. He asked if it was baby time, if this was my first baby, and how much pain I was in on a scale of 0-10? I told him she is my 6th baby and my pain level was 3. He yelled for a younger male nurse to get a wheelchair and that I needed to get up to Labor and Delivery. The nurse said please don't have this baby on my watch as he wheeled me upstairs LOL!

At 11:00 am. I was sitting in my bed in Labor and Delivery trying frantically to get a hold of Gary. I tried several times and all I got was the recorder. I knew he was home with Ethan so I worried that Ethan got the phone and it was off the hook! I was shaking nervously and the nurse kept telling me everything will be ok. I called me sister Dawn since she was to come over to our house and watch the kids. Thankfully she picked up and said she was on her way to the hospital and on her way she would try and get a hold of Gary for me. The kids were in school so it worked out great because she could go to the hospital and be with me as well.

At 12:00 pm. Dawn and Gary both walked in my room. She was able to reach him on her way to the hospital. He was outside taking Ethan for a walk. As soon as they both got there my contractions started to hurt (0-10 my pain level was a 5) and were coming every 2-3 minutes! I swear at 11:59 am. I was in no pain, it was if a light switched turned on!

At 12:30 pm. my Dr. came in to check me. He said I was 6 cm. and proceeded to break my water. Once he broke my water the contractions really began to hurt and right away (my pain level went from a 5 to 7). The contractions were coming every 2 minutes. I was still able to keep a conversation going with Dawn and Gary in between contractions. I think I was still in shock that I was in labor because I normally stand up or lay down in bed during labor. Instead I sat the whole labor process which was causing back labor.

At 1:30 pm. I called for the nurse because I was feeling a lot of discomfort and wanted to be checked again. She checked me and said I was 9 cm! She said not to push because my Dr. was next door (his office is joined to the hospital) and she had to call him.

At 1:35 pm. he, his two nursing students, and his nurse all came in to attend the birth. That 5 minutes felt like an hour! I kept saying is Dr. Coffey here yet, over and over. When he came in the room he said I'm here and I said THANK GOD! He said everyone ran over as fast as they could. Dawn was at my side with a cool wash cloth helping coach me since I kept saying, I can't do this, I can't do this LOL. My Dr. said sure you can, you have did it five times LOL. Gary was capturing every moment with pictures.

After ONE push Genevieve was brought into this World at 1:41 pm.! She was born with her cord wrapped around her neck twice! Thank God she had no issues during labor! Once the Dr. cut her cord she was blue! It took a few minutes that felt like hours to get her to take her first breath and cry! Once she did she was nice and pink quickly and her APGAR scores were 8 and 9. We feel very Blessed to have her and she is Loved by everyone!
