Mom Rescues 5 Year Old Daughter From Washing Machine

What a scary and random thing to have happen to your 5 year old! A mom in Washington saved her daughter's life when she realized that her young daughter was trapped inside of a washing machine rapidly filling with water.
Below is a news video on the incident. No one knows how the little girl wound up in the washer (curiosity?), but what a fast-thinking mom!
Have you taken your kids to a laundromat? How do you keep them safe?

I have never taken my kids to a laundromat, but what a coincidence this story is posted today. Because my 5 year old asked me about an hour ago around the dinner table "what would happen if a kid got inside the washing machine and it turned on?" I'm glad her curiosity was filtered past me. And I'm glad it turned out ok for this little girl.
I always thought it was stupid for the doors on those machines to lock when they are running. Sure, it prevents people from opening the door and making a huge mess, but kids are always drawn to washers and dryers. I remember playing hide and seek as a kid and hiding in the dryer.
When we go to the laundromat, our kids join me (or us if my husband is assisting). But they always sit on a chair or bench. I never let them go near the machines.
This is just insane. Curiosity definitely gets the best of kids! What a quick thinking mom! I am not sure what I would have done had I been in that situation! Maybe looked for the plug? Who knows...but kudos for that quick thinking mom!
I just watched the video, since I read your comments above. I had no idea that the doors locked, so I didn't know what the commotion was about. Can you imagine if you were the little girl trapped in there and you saw your Mom run away (which was evidently the right thing to do) to get the tire iron? Geez. That's some nice trauma there.
My children never went with me. I was lucky enough to have older children that could watch the younger ones. I just have to say though, those machines are difficult to lock and only lock from the outside. It requires you to push in on a button while turning the handle. I find it very hard to grasp how this child got locked into the machine. I am not saying the mother did it, but someone had to lock that door. Perhaps another child? Regardless, thank goodness that mother was so quick to react. I am not sure I would have known what to do.
Wow, I had no idea that doors could lock like that! I remember playing hide-and-seek in dryer at a friend's house all the time when I was little...
why are so many kids getting in the washing machine??
this happened to a boy in my hometown except the mom was cooking; sadly, the boy died from the incident.
Either the kid didn't know better (what kid would know the door locks? Hell, I am an adult and didn't know that!) someone stuffed her in there with nasty intent, or possibly, the mom has that weird disorder where usually the mother harms the kid and then takes care of the damage to feel like she's caring for her child. Doubtful it's the last case, though.
LOL- "what a fast thinking mum."?
I'm pretty sure every single person on the planet would be like "My kids in the washing machine, I should get her out."
@Adrenaline_Unknown@xanga - its called Munchhausen syndrome
this is the main reason why I hate front loading washers. Once a child is inside and it is shut and turned on, the door will not open.. there needs to be some kind of emergency release from the inside just in case.. A friend of mine almost lost her 3 year old this way, he was very very fortunate that he did not suffer any long term issues from his near drowning. She returned her front loader for a top loader machine. The children (the little one was 2 at the time, and his older brother who was 4) were playing hide and seek.
Note to self: Get a top-loader and actually tell my kids "DONT PLAY IN THE FREAKIN MACHINES WHILE IT TAKES ME 2 MINUTES TO POUR THESE CLOTHES IN A WASHER!!!" >.> You would think the mom would look back and see her child is "not where they are supposd to be for 5 freakin minutes!" So if my kid goes into the machine and dies, am I not held responsible????? Anyone want to kill their kid, put them in the washing machine... the world will just think it was an accident and not blame you. *Bangs head on laptop*
I hope there was a criminal case against this.. Like an investigation because this sounds a little... Fishy..
I have slight OCD so I have to always make sure my cats arent in the dryer (my washer isnt like that) before I turn it on. Sometimes I forget to check so I look everywhere till I see that my cats are safe.
When I was little, my mom took me to the laundromat with her all the time, but I can't remember ever wanting to be inside one of the machines. I just took a book to read or crayons with a coloring book so I'd be occupied. Now I know that, when I have kids, to profusely warn them about washers and dryers.
@Ace_Trid@xanga - What!? Seriously? I can't imagine what that was like for that family. That's just... horrifying.
this is why I put my kids in the dryer
@bbanmen420@xanga - I ALWAYS check to see if one of my cats is in the washer or dryer... I didn't check when I was little and one of my cats was in the dryer, we had to put him to sleep because he got hurt really bad..
What a dumb kid. When I was 5, I knew how a washing machine worked, and I knew it wouldn't be good to be inside one...
@belleorecluses@xanga - I think they are considering her quick thinking for the fact she didn't panic, and immediately thought to get the tire-iron out of her car in order to break the glass.
I'm glad the child was okay. I guess if you have a front loader, you need to teach your kid "hey, if you go in this, you won't be able to get out, and you might drown". Similar to "don't touch the hot stove" and "don't get in strangers cars". I figure by age 5, they will listen to stuff like that. We can only hope. The little girl probably didn't know.
@WhatTheElmo@xanga - Aw :( Poor kitty... Sorry that happened to you :(
I remember going to play hide and seek before and was going to go into the dryer, but my dad told me never to do it because you could get killed and I never did..
i used to be curious about it as a child too. we had a washer dryer at home that i wasnt able to climb into though. it was the kind where the lid is at the top.
the laundromat we did go to used to have tvs and a play area with blocks trucks and barbies. it was so fun i never really thought about the washing machine for fun. too bad that place ran out of business...
Um, no, not impressive. Keep a fucking closer eye on your young child and you won't be in situations like this. Christ.
fIf I had to use a laundromat, I wouldn't take my son. He' stay with my husband or my husband would go and I would stay home.
I am trying to figure out how the little girl closed herself in the machine. The doors don't close that easily. Like @gwacemom - said those doors only lock from the outside and I have never seen one that didn't require you to turn a handle.
How the fuck don't you realize that your child is getting into a washer? The laundromat where my mom used to go was full of sketchy people and I couldn't walk two feet from my mom without her noticing. I'm glad she saved her daughter but the fact that she had to is just irresponsible.
