I've had cravings, I'm on my third pregnancy and I've craved certain foods and drinks... but not roadkill. In the UK, the woman pictured above has been craving roadkill - she's eaten foxes, deer, pheasants, rabbits, and pigeons.
She used to make jewelery from the roadkill hides, but now... well, they are dinner. To her this is normal, she believes in an alternative food lifestyle. Me? I think it's gross. I'll stick to my cherry Icees and black olives.

Would you eat roadkill? What were your weird cravings?

All of those animals are edible. I don't see anything wrong with the food she's eating, but I'd be worried about freshness. lol
This is gross and unhealthy. I'd never eat roadkill.
I'm pregnant right now and I do have some weird, abnormal and unhealthy cravings, though. I have PICA from being anemic so I crave CHARCOAL! It is the BEST smelling thing in the world and I want nothing more than to eat it! I'm a smart girl though and I've resisted my craving. ;)
being a guy, I have not had pregnancy cravings. But when I was in Houston, on one of my mission trips, I did crave spanish rice I used to buy the rice and stuff, and one of the volunteers would cook me batches of the stuff I once ate it with breakfast, lunch and dinner
When I went to college, I had a classmate who craved spinach mixed with applesauce when she was pregnant.
But...you...don't...know...how...long...that's...been...there...
Okay, truth...you could say the same of my cravings for Taco Bell when I was pregnant, but still...
I guess every pregnant woman has her own tastes, no matter how odd they might seem to the rest of us. C'est la vie. :)
Hm.. Wonder if she would eat the exploded bear I've seen as a road kill once... TBH, that seems really gross :/ I've never been pregnant so I never had those cravings, but I think Id resist not eating them... Sure they are edible but how long have they been there? Bugs in there ect... :/
‘One of the big reasons for being public about this is that I want to raise awareness about where food actually comes from’, said Alison. ‘Some people are so blasé about picking their food off a supermarket shelf without giving a thought to how it lived or how it was killed.'
Getting hit by a car is probably a more humane way to die than what cows and chickens have to go through in a factory farm, honestly. o.O
This isn't that weird...Most states have road kill lists, so if something big gets hit, others can take it for meat.
@armsraceofsound@xanga - It's not any different from eating other wild game. It is safe as long as you take care of the meat soon enough.
lmao PETA's gonna get on thaaat
Haha, she looks like lady gaga with no makeup. Why does she have pregnancy cravings for roadkill? 'CAUSE SHE WAS BORN THIS WAY! :p
I hope she would never craved for human meat.... Sometimes people have to use their brain.
Oh my God, you have got to be kidding me.
Animals carry so much disease, it was killed by being smashed, it's been lying on a road with bugs and other animals picking at it...
And geez, I don't even want to think about the entrails being squished and leaking onto the meat.
If she wants something gamey, why doesn't she just do a little hunting?
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - @armsraceofsound@xanga - @SkyyL@xanga - @bbanmen420@xanga - @filtered_sunlight - @bmillerssailor@xanga - um, why is it so disgusting? If it's fresh and she's seen it get killed or knows how long it's been there, what's the problem, exactly? Sure, it's not a "normal" thing to do, but why is it any more disgusting than eating animals that have been tortured before their slaughter?
@written_conversations@xanga - Because roadkill, like RACCOONS and such things, can carry diseases that can make you sick. Of course, all animals carry some risk of disease but the meats you buy from, say a butcher shop, have been examined and tested for diseases. Roadkill has not been tested.
@written_conversations@xanga - She hasn't seen it get killed, though. Her friends call her when they pass roadkill on the street. That's in the article they linked to.
@bmillerssailor@xanga makes a good point. Wild animals often carry diseases like rabies and so on. I can't imagine eating that, especially while pregnant, when you're far more susceptible to things like listeria.
And, like I said in my comment, it's laying on the street being nibbled on by scavengers... unless in the UK they don't have scavengers, and the vultures and insects nicely leave the meat alone until she can get to it.
And then there's that thing where you don't want to eat something that has had the contents of it's entrails spewed out into it's body. This is why it's safest to buy meat from someone that you know is fastidious about their butchering.
Finally, it's kind of weird to me that being killed by a hit and run is considered less torturous than being slaughtered or hunted. Maybe it's because I live in Central Texas and I've seen lots of things get hit. It's not an easy or painless death. In fact, I've seen my dad pull over and shoot something that he hit that didn't die immediately, to keep it from suffering.
So, yep. Still think it's disgusting. And before you or anyone else assume that I don't know where my meat comes from... yes, I know. I've seen commercial slaughtering videos, and I've gone hunting and cooked meat that was processed right in front of me.
I have a suspicion she chooses very fresh roadkill and more likely, roadkill that has not been fully squished but rather struck by a car of sorts.
I didn't read the linked article so I could be wrong, but that's my guess.
@written_conversations@xanga - Read the other comments... And mine for that matter... Diseases and bugs, ect ect.. And like someone stated, she doesn't see it get killed therefor she doesn't know when it died, what kind of things are in it ect..
OMG seriously! Some people here are not very open minded, I am sure she doesn't eat road kill that has been sitting there for days while insects and birds eat away at it. She is basically craving wild game. We eat wild game, But we hunt it. Meaning she was already collecting them for another purpose I am sure she knows someone and has connections to getting it. You can eat a cow from the store and get mad cow. Or now you can even eat fresh produce from the store and get sick. It is food people. We haven't always had a walmart or Kroger to go pick up our meat. She even states she has standards..
'I would like to try fox and badger but they're never in good enough condition to eat; although I have used them for my artwork.’ said Brierley

Only if it was the only choice I had...luckily I am not that bad off.
@written_conversations@xanga - My comment was that she doesn't know how long it's been there. That is why I find it a little off-putting. How many times have you witnessed an animal being hit by a car? In 12.5 years on the road, in rural and populated areas alike, I've seen it TWICE. As someone else pointed out, she hasn't seen it to know when it was killed, according to the article. And how does she know that that animal that stumbled out into the road didn't have rabies or something? I'm fairly certain that the cow I'll be eating for dinner tonight wasn't rabid and wasn't baking out in the sun for 6+ hours. Jussayin'.
I think there is nothing wrong about eating alternative meat (deer, fox, etc.). I also understand people eating roadkill. Hopefully and assuming it is fresh roadkill. I've heard it is very common in some rural areas. My biggest concern would definitely be parasites and diseases, that are common in wild game. And I wouldn't even be as concerned for her, I'd be more concerned for her unborn baby.
