15 Year Old Murdered During First Week of School
I know it is back to school season and everyone is so excited. I know I am since I just returned to college after a year off stint. However, in Las Vegas, it has not been such a happy event for Arbor View High School and the Otremba family.
On Saturday, my sister told me that one of my nieces schoolmates, Alyssa Otremba (15 years old) went missing on Friday night. She had just left a friends house after going there to get a book for school. She had texted her mother to tell her she would be home in thirty minutes but she never showed up. Her family and friends searched for her on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday night, they discovered a body in a vacant lot behind a neighborhood close to Otremba's home, near where she was last seen. The police were unsure to whether it was Otremba or not since the body had been so badly burned to where it was unrecognizable. On Monday it was confirmed that it was her body and shortly after they arrested Javier Righetti, 19 years old, for the crimes against her.
Fortunately, Righetti proved to be unwise which led to his capture. That Friday night, 9/2, he called his friend Daniel Ortiz to meet him. Ortiz drove to his house where Righetti told him he had robbed and killed a girl but Ortiz thinking his friend was just high on something, ignored him and just thought he was talking crazy. Righetti asked Ortiz to take him to the store where he bought the accelerant and matches. Later he had Ortiz take him to the field where he killed Otremba, When Ortiz got to the field, he started feeling sick and said he had to go. Ortiz said he ignored all the calls he received from Righetti after that night. I'm guessing Ortiz told his girlfriend what happened which led to her calling the cops (days later) with the information her boyfriend told her. Ortiz and his girlfriend told the cops where Righetti lived which led to his arrest and confession.
He told the cops that he stalked her as she walked home, beat her, robbed her, raped her, and then stabbed her to death with a kitchen knife (over 40 times). Later he returned to the field by way of Ortiz giving him a ride, and burning her corpse to destroy the evidence.
He admitted to robbing and raping women before and is believed to be connected to a rape that happened in that neighborhood about 4 months ago (assailant was never caught).
There is so much that disturbs me about this, I don't even know where to start. I guess the first thing is that this all happened in my sisters neighborhood. I have been to that gas station numerous times since it is just down the street from my sisters home. This guy lived minutes away from my sisters house and this girl was killed so near my sisters home. This guy lived blocks from my sisters home. Basically, way too close to home. She has a 14 year old daughter who attended school with this poor girl. This happening in a new and flourishing, beautiful community. And what's with Ortiz not calling the cops as soon as he began to believe what Righetti was saying?
Most importantly, what this guy did to her was INSANE. I just can't believe it. It takes a lot or rage and force to stab someone, no less over 40 times. This guy sought this girl out to slaughter her. I can't even imagine what her family is going through. I can't imagine waiting at home for my little girl to return and never seeing her walk through that door again. I feel for the Otremba family and pray that they get justice for their little girl. I only wish that we went by the "eye for an eye" policy when it comes to acts of violence like this. I hope that Arbor View High School can get through the loss of their fellow friend and student. I hope that Otremba's family gets some closure at least from the capture of this monster.

What do you think of this? Does it anger you that there are many more like Righetti out there in the world today? Does this make you feel unsafe? How do you handle something like this when your child(ren) may know the victim?

This is so horrible. How can he live with himself???
it angers me too! seriously there are some sick people out there. i can't even imagine what i would do or how i would deal with something like that happening to my child. in a way i think i would hope i would find out before the cops so that i could inflict my own torture filled punishment on them. i am going to keep her family in my prayers.
i work with kids and when i hear that type of shit.. it angers me to no end.. and at the same time.. i'm afraid to have kids and have this happen to my kids..
i wonder what made him do it.. this young girl.. this child.. was walking home.. did nothing to him to anger him or provoke him in any way shape or form.. she's just an innocent child what gives him the right to hurt someone else's child and take someone so precious to her family.. i wonder what his own family thinks of him.. people who do that type of shit are cowards and should be condemned for the hurt they instill in others for no good reason at all..
I'm upset & I feel bad for the Otremba family. I just hope parents wont shelter their kids from the world. It's good to advise them to be safe & wary but sometimes parents take things a bit too far & make their children scared of everything & it backfires later. I hope I never have to deal with this when I have kids because I know what it's like.
As far as this unprovoked, needless attack, something is seriously wrong with that motherfucker. You dont just wake up one day & go rape & attack women. You're right, it takes alot of rage & force to stab someone like that. Something happened in Righetti's life to make him turn to this crime. What gets me is he called his best friend to brag about it. I think that shows the need to "show off his work" to try & get phrase or attention. They need to give this guy a thorough psych eval.
I lived just four blocks from where the body of Amber Haggarman was found in Arlington. It was a relatively nice neighborhood but did have quite a few decent apartment complexes. This time they suspect from one witness that it was a man driving a black pickup that took his opportunity while she was bicycling in a vacant store parking lot. There were other business there open and operating in the strip shopping center but only one camd forward with any information. The case is now 15 years old, Amber would have been 24 this year and the police are pursuing a suspect now. But even finding the man will not end the grief for this family.
See now this is why my kids are going to hate me, I'm going to be such an overbearing parent because I'm paranoid & they'd never leave the house.
But I feel so sorry for the girl this happened to & her family.
Oh, & I hope homeboy burns in hell
This guy obviously had something wrong with him. As disgusting as what he did was, no "sane" person does things like that - he obviously has an untreated mental disorder somewhere. I just hate that people will now go "Oh, he deserves to die/burn in hell/be tortured" - no, he doesn't. He's obviously sick and needs to be locked up for his own protection.
I feel bad for her family and friends though. RIP Alyssa.
This is such a sad story. It makes me scared for my child(ren) more so than it does for myself. It would break my heart if anything like this ever happened to anyone I knew. I don't know how I would handle it if it happened to my child(ren) nor do I know how I would explain it to them if their friend was victimized. This is one of those things you can never plan for, it is a hurdle you jump when it shows up in your life. The only thing you can do is be sure that your children know how to be safe and not to trust just anyone. I am sure the Otremba family did educate their children on safety the best they could, unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to control the will of a psychopath once they've decided they are going to do harm to you or someone you love.
He's not human.
This is just the saddest thing that can happen to a family. My heart goes out to them, and their lives will never be the same. It will be horrible to sit in a court room and hear the awful details of this precious child's last few minutes on earth. I am just so sorry for them. Nothing that girl did or said could ever be even partially responsible for such an act, but there are more and more evil people out there than when I was a kid. I know for a fact my kids didn't always take my advice, but I strongly believe that girls and women shouldn't be out alone after dark. I know it sounds archaic, but I've seen some things happen in my home town that led me to believe my advice still stands sound. It's horrid that we cannot walk our own neighborhoods without fear, but after dark seems to be even worse.
To do such a thing to someone is just inhumane. Such a fucked up world to live in.
It irritates me more than anything but its the justice system's fault. There isn't harsh punishments for killing people, so many people get out of jail, and child molesters... oh my god don't even get me started. I think once someone like this is caught they should be killed and not sit in jail being paid for with our taxes. This is why I am so crazy paranoid though. I lock the doors in freakin parking lots because I watch forensic files and people get raped and killed and babies left for dead while they are changing a diaper in the backseat! And then the way system is common sense means nothing, like casey anthony or that mansion "suicide."
So sad. Prayers to her family and friends. There are way to many crazy people in this world!
Ok I live in Vegas... I looked up the directions and I dont think its a very nice side of town..... Why was she out by herself?.. If I were walking around by myself my boyfriend would kill me... Its dangerous in Vegas.. Either way, its very bad that happened to her and I think the person who knew about it but didnt "believe it" should be an accessory..... Its like when Chris Privett died (went to Palo Verde highschool.. My school I went to) and there were 2 girls with the shooter and they didnt get in trouble... Screw those people.. I hate people like that :( Obviously.. Anyone would, but it should be an eye for an eye.. Maybe he should get raped then stabbed 40 times then... No... Thats a little harsh, I dont believe in the death sentance BUT he should rott in jail the rest of his life.. Fucken loser....
I just don't have words for how horrible that is. I can't imagine the horror that poor girl went through, and what kind of person it would take to put someone through that.
the most horrible thing to happen to a parent is for them to out live their child. its a millions times worse if the child dies in such a sudden, violent manor. i honestly cant even imagine going through this with my child. i dont think i would be able to function as a normal human being if something so horrible were to ever happen.
I've never experienced such a heinous crime in my family. I've only watched these cases on what used to be "Court T.V.", now, "In Session." And the eye for an eye doesn't bring closure. There's no such thing as closure. If a death sentence is meted out, the family spends the next 20 or so years going before appeals courts, listening to the same gruesome details they had to listen to the first time, and, pleading with the courts to maintain the sentence. If the bastard is given life, without parol, nobody has to go back to court. Many times these types of crimes are committed by paranoid schizophrenics. It's very expensive in America to purchase the kinds of drugs needed to keep these people's minds at bay, so frequently we see them un-medicated, and on the loose. Or, worse yet, misdiagnosed, from childhood on.
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - I agree.
I know when I will probably be an overbearing parent because I'm paranoid and will constantly worry about them...but I will teach them to be wary of people and never to trust strangers. It angers me that there are some sick people out there (its a sick, sad world!!!). I will keep her family in my thoughts....
Though I blame the justice system....there isn't a harsh enough punishments for killing people, so many people get out of jail and then repeat their crimes (casey anthony...). I think once
someone like this is caught they should be killed and not in jail. Or better yet, do to them what they did to their victim, now that would be justice (at least to me..)!!!
I cannot imagine what her parents must be feeling right now.
He will rot in hell for eternity.
There is justice after all.
I don't understand people like that. He's human garbage, but I don't think we should be encouraging "eye for an eye" justice. That's a scary road to go down. Government-sanctioned beating, raping, and savage murdering of its citizens? No thanks. Do we forget the Eighth Amendment? I'd be more afraid of my own country than aberrant madmen. Especially troubling is that convicted criminals are sometimes later exonerated, so such a policy would inevitably end in cases of innocents being brutalized. That might not be a concern here, but the law must be equitable.
This is a davastating story, and I wish people were more aware of what's happening in Mexico, Monterrey to be exactly, we see stories like this every single day and not just one case, but more than 10 it is devastating of what is going on, saddly there is a bunch of sick people who are mentally ill.
Makes me feel sick. literally, physically sick.
What a monster! In situations like these, I really do wish there was a clause of "eye for an eye." It's sickening to think that there are more people out there who are just like Righetti just walking around like they're good people.
