  • So Excited About Cloth Diapering!

I have been doing a LOT of research on cloth diapering this pregnancy. Regardless how costly a set of diapers are, in the long run I am still saving a couple grand doing it.

With all the research I thought I had found the way for me and my hubbs...

I was going to do the Econobum system!

One Full Kit includes; 3 waterproof covers, 12 100% cotton one size pre-folds, and a small wet bag. All this for only $50 bucks. Kit's for the same amounts with other brands cost up to 100 bucks or more.

I was also going to buy a few thristies diaper covers, some snappys and pins. So buying 4 Econobum Full kit packs I would not only be saving thousands from disposable's, with the Econobum I would be saving about $70-$100 bucks in cloth diapers!

I was so proud that not only am I doing something good for the environment, I am also being economically smart by being so frugal and so talented in bargain hunting! Just when I thought I was for sure going for the gold with this plan, my mother knocked right back to silver.

Well, my mother being a retired pro did cloth diapering back with my two oldest brothers. She bought me some flat folds for my baby shower. They are also 100% cotton.

Only guess what?!?! They are $8.50 for 10!  And guess what else?! They are the Garanimals Brand and I can get them at my local Walmart. YAY for Mommy finding me a new way! Leave the Gold for the true Pro!

I am going to be able to save so much money this way!!! I will Be spending 42.50 for 50 Diapers rather then 100$ for 48 pre-fold diapers. They are also one size fit's all so, yay!

After I buy and set up my system I am going to save so damn much! On top of the thousands from disposables... I'm not going to save just a simple hundred... I'm going to save a couple hundred!

Guess what else is cool about the flat fold's? I can do Diaper Origomi!

I know how silly of me, I even woke Jose up to show him a fold I learned! I'm so giddy over it! I need to go to bed soon though!

Any other mom's or dad's get so excited over Cloth Diapering?

I'm planning to make my own cloth diapers. But...I keep breaking my sewing machines! :-/ I found  a super easy pattern: http://littlebeanbum.blogspot.com/2009/09/how-to-make-one-size-fitted-pocket.html

    yay!

I started out like so many mothers with Pampers.  Then an exam at the pediatricians office discovered my sons feet were windswept (//).  I paniced that it would mean braces.  Doc said, 'no problem'...use cloth diapers and twist them between the legs.  The thickness of the cloth is there but it is up and down rather than side to side."  Genious!  Worked great.  So I bought the cloth diapers (works with prefold too) but still had some diaper rash, caused by bacteria that it is difficult to wash out at home.  Subscribed to a diaper service...still cheaper than disposables, they use water and steam almost to 212F and would give me extras at no extra charge for diarrhea and teething.  No diaper rash, no odor (they gave me a special container for wet and dirty diapers), and no dipping dirty diapers in the toilet.  Just shake out the firm and don't worry about the rest, they took care of it all.  And the suprise?  Cheaper than disposables.

I know it is going to sound weird, but the flour sack towels you can get Wal-Mart or Target for close to the same price make better "flats" than the actual flat diapers you can buy at Wal-Mart.  I still like both--as well as the birdseye flats I can buy online--but I thought I would throw that option out there.

@yourkbear@xanga - I taught myself to sew using that very same pattern!  The result wasn't pretty at all, but it was functional for the several I made.  Now I want to make some more especially since I have an overabundance of prefolds and flats to stuff them with.

Careful with the Garanimals & Gerber brands.  Make sure they are "diaper service quality" (it'll say on the package) & if they are not organic cotton, you may have to strip them before you use them because the bleach that is used on them can form a build up.

I am SO addicted to cloth diapering, it's pathetic! Cottonbabies.com is one of my bookmarked pages, after Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, and Xanga, of course. (Free shipping, heck yes!) Econobums are next on my "to-try" list.

Right now I am primarily using bumGenius 4.0 (the pocket diapers) on my two kids, but I couldn't afford more of those when baby #2 arrived so I bought a bunch of unbleached indian prefolds and a snappi from Cottonbabies. I am using those on my two-month old with a couple of Flip covers and a couple of Thirsties. Personally, when I use the Snappi, I like the Thirsties sized covers much better because of the additional leg gussets (perfect for runny newborn poop), but when I just lay the prefold in the diaper, I prefer the Flip cover because it has flaps that hold the prefold in place. If I'm not mistaken, Econobums are just the cheaper version of the Flip covers and don't have the flaps, so when money is the bottom line, I'd definitely go with those covers too!

My niece is 8 months old, and my sister has been using cloth diapers all along. MUCH cheaper! Much easier then I realized also, it's really no different then disposable diapers, you just throw it in the laundry instead of the trash! She still uses regular diapers when traveling, and has a few on hand just in case, but overall, I guarentee it's way better. I'll definitely be using them when it comes time for me to have kids!

@yourkbear@xanga - My sister has made a few! Great idea!

When I have kids I am cloth diapering the CRAP out of their bottoms. Literally.

    yay!

Careful with how cheap you're going - really, you get what you pay for. Bum Genius and Thirsty's are more expensive, true, but much better quality than some of the other cheaper options out there! So you might want to try a few different kinds before you just invest in ONE system, and go all out without even trying it out!! Seriously, be careful about it. you could realize you didn't like them, or they didn't work for your little one, and have wasted the money you could have spent on some higher-end diapers that ultimately work better.

But! I hope you love what you got!! And YAY for cloth diapering!!!

WHEN I HAD MY BABIES DISPOSABLE DIAPERS WERE UNHEARD OF...Only cloth, softly wrapped around the baby.  My youngest "baby" is 38,

@marzish@xanga - I actually read mixed reviews on BG... I like the reviews on the Thirsties... but I'm not doing AIO's. I'm doing flat's with a cover... (Like back in the old days...) Some covers I found that got some mixed reviews just like BG but are more affordable are Kawaii brand... We are going to get a few of those and a few Thirsties... And see how that works. We are also getting a few wool PO's maybe 2 or 3.

I am a frequent changer even with disposables so I figure I'll be better off with flats... My first even with disposables I would go through 15 diapers because I changed her every tiny pee.

I actually bought some Flower Sack Cloths for diapers and the Garanimals are going to be used as doubler's. for now... I know I may get a few AIO for a sitter or if I end up putting my little boy in  DayCare.

Thank you every one for sharing! :D I already washed all the diapers and pre-folded them...  :D

@REDPOPPY1@xanga - Awww... I can't imagine my baby being all grown up!
I'm 22 and I'm my mothers baby. Her oldest is 33 and she cloth diapered him.  She couldn't do disposable's for him because they were too new and he had sever allergies to the chemicals in them.

My DD also had reactions to disposables... Till Target started making there brand with cotton. but it still to costly even with an off brand. I'm very excited about full cloth diapering...

  • MommyMarty22@xanga

@snarkius@xanga - lol... thank you... I took your advice and bought the mainstays wal-mart brand flour sacks... My mother said that is what her grandma used :D

It was funny because I asked her about it and she started laughing... she said "I'm not that old! That's from MY Grandmothers time... Let's go check it out!"

    It was pretty funny...

  • MommyMarty22@xanga

Update! Well my son is now 3 months old... We bought the cheaper brand of Kawaii's and they work wonderfully! I am so very happy how they tuned out... We also invested on more Garanimal Flats we use them as dipes, and wipes... We also invested in more flower sacks from walmart. They are wonderful!

It is so much easier after the 2 week mark... I rinse by hand and use a dry and wet pail...

I am going to invest into a sprayer (might just get one from homedepot.)
