  • BABYQUE (Men and Baby Showers...)

So after 3 years with our little girl Juliana, Jose and I are now expecting our little guy very soon - July 12th.

Back when our first born was still in the oven, my mother and sister in-law threw us an all women shower with the exception of my brothers. Jose still enjoyed it and we were both very grateful but none of our friends were invited and it was mostly family. Since this is our first boy we both wanted to celebrate his coming to the world some how. So I came up with the idea of a co-ed barbecue.

I want to keep it baby themed without it being to fru-fru so my husband and the guys can feel comfortable. I know guys really don't care about decorations but, I still want it slightly themed so the girls don't feel completely out of their element either.  So I figure BBQ Picnic style table's would be cool to keep it mellow with small mason jars and a t lit candle as a center piece.

We ordered rib tip's and barbecue chicken to be catered, and my husband will be grilling burgers and dogs (woof, jk jk). I was also thinking getting a few cases of beer for the barbecue feel, still no one will be getting drunk.  I figure just a few beers to complement the food would be harmless.

The cake above is just an idea of the shower cake, I found on google.

We will be renting a Volleyball net and have a fire pit going too.  I was wondering though about the  "shower" games, I know some guys might find it a little off putting.

A few Games I have in mind are with guy friendly gifts:

    • Dirty Diaper Game- Who ever get's the diaper with the Hershey kiss in it win's a Giant Chocolate Bar.
    • Don't pop the baby- Who ever can tie their shoe with out popping the balloon (baby) under their shirt win's home made rice krispy treats and brownies.
    • Beer/Baby bottle- Who ever can finish their baby bottle of beer first with no hands wins a large pack of beef jerky.

The take home favors are homemade BBQ sauce in Jars with Home made Labels on the lid. (Tried to keep it memorable with out being super girly.)

I figure since there is food, beer, games and is mostly like a regular barbecue it should be fun. I really want my husband to enjoy this and I want him to feel supported by his guy friends.

What do you all think? How can I make them fun for the guys? Guys I know a lot of you cringe at showers but if it was catered to the men would you go?

Seems like a pretty cool idea. As long as you aren't drinking the beer ;) Good luck with the shower!

@cconlyone1@xanga - Well that is just wonderful! Thank you for the spam, I really appreciate the effort :D

That seems fun. Whenever I have a baby, I want the shower to be coed but I don't think my very traditional family would agree.

@floralfiesta@xanga -  Yeah my mother indirectly knocks it... She's not exactly traditional... She's more superficial. Just make sure you aren't miserable or keep the family and friends ones separate. Nothing like two parties :D lol

I think it could go either way- it depends on the men in question. If your husband likes the idea, why not?

That's a really cool idea! Where were you with this three months ago?? LOL I just watched one of my best friends from work go through a whole bunch of drama and awkwardness because her hubby wanted to attend, but her sister-in-law's panties got bunched; declaring it "girls only". I say if the guys want to come [even to a normal shower], why not? When did it stop being 'the more the merrier'?? (He ended up not attending and she almost didn't either because of the drama! Aurgh!)

@filtered_sunlight - That's really sad when something that should be about the Child get's drama thrown at it. People get to bend on etiquette some times.

Also I noticed when some women get their planes or ideas tied in with a party, they forget about who the party is really for and want everything their way. Which is why their are only so many successful professional party planners. It's also why you here so much about mothers of the bride taking over the wedding plans and becoming crazy!

    lol

In my culture, babyshowers are generally co-ed. It's either thrown at a house or at a hall/club and both girls and guys attend. For my babyshower next month, it's being thrown at a hall and I'm expecting close to 80-100 people to attend (our families find any reason to celebrate lol). There is a bar with a TV in it attached to the hall and that's where most of the guys go to hang out at events like these. The only time we ever see them during a babyshower is when the food is ready to be served lol.

My ex threw a diaper party for the guys and the mama threw a regular baby shower with girls. I will probably do that for my 2nd kid because diapers are one of the main expences. $35-$60 a month until you buy pull ups until their 3 is crazy. If you dont like the idea of only diapers, you can ask to buy a package of wipes with each present. With only $1-2 a pack, who is gonna say NO!lol. Id even settle for the traveling/sample pack of diapers which only have about 20 diapers in it for $8. And the pack of 3 wipes is about $5. I cant wait to plan my 2nd kids shower because my family didnt give me one. I guess by then I'll probably save enough money to afford all the diapers and wipes my kid needs so I could throw a celebration with gifts optional.
