Pregnant With "Joe"
"Coffee is the best thing to douse a sunrise with."
Yes, I'm 25 weeks pregnant. And yes, I drink a cup of coffee in the morning.
I've done my research. After filtering out the extremists and looking for the most common answer, I have decided that one small cup of coffee a day is not harmful.
What is harmful? Me without a cup of coffee in the morning. No joke.
So if all the people giving me stares like I'm lighting a crack pipe at the bus stop could please divert their attention to anything else, that would be great. Thank you.
Did you catch flack for things you ate, drank or otherwise consumed during pregnancy?

How do people at the bus stop even know what you're drinking? Get a non-clear coffee mug and tell them to mind their own business.
Lol! I said those exact words to my hubby the other day. When I walk into Starbucks for a coffee, they look at me like I'm doing crack!
Yes, I was yelled at for drinking coffee too and when I yelled back louder for getting in the way of my ONE cup of coffee a day...they backed off. I was also looked at funny for eating sushi ONCE during my pregnancy. I of course cleared it with my doctor who said it was perfectly fine.
Don't worry about it.
This one chick tried not putting blue cheese on my salad at a restaurant. I had to get her to get her manager to get the blue cheese on my salad, but not after telling her that she had no right to make health decisions for me especially when she didn't know the difference between pasteurized and non-pasteurized blue cheese. No one ever said anything about my coffee habit but I didn't show until I was like 6 months and by then I stopped drinking caffeine because my son didn't exactly respond to my pleas (cough screaming at him) to stop kicking my ribs.
I had this struggle too. I drink a cup a day. I have 4 year old twins so without my coffee I would be a mess.
If anyone stared or said anything, I wasn't aware. It pays to be half-deaf and unobservant.
if anyone says anything to me, i usually just state that my OB allows me to have 12 oz of caffeinated drink(s) a day.....and since i get to pick my poison, i pick coffee. they usually shut up when they find out it's doctor approved.
I'm 30 weeks pregnant and I still have my cup of coffee in the morning. Sometimes, depending on how stress I am that day at work or how tired I am, I'll indulge in another cup (though it's a rare occasion). I don't see the issue with it unless you're constantly drinking coffee throughout the day. I hate how some people expect you to sacrifice everything because you are pregnant. I drank more coffee with my daughter than I have with this pregnancy and she is as healthy as can be.
uh I don't drink coffee, but some people got onto me for drinking hot chocolate saying chocolate has tons of caffeine... but honestly it has less then coffee. It was my version of coffee to wake me up lol
my Dr and I talked about this when discussing ways to improve our chances of getting (and staying) pregnant.. and he asked me how severe my headaches were when I did not have coffee.. If I dont have a coffee in the morning, by lunch I have a full blown migraine. He said I could either suffer through it without advil or I could just have 1 cup of coffee in the morning. Since I drink organic chemical free fair trade home ground coffee (I love Kicking Horse coffee!!), its less processed and thus less harmful to baby.
He also told me that the stress of daily migraines could actually be more harmful to the baby then simply cutting back the amount I drink.
yes i do. over a stupid bottle of soda.
Wow, where do y'all live? Maybe we're trashy here down south but I never got grief over anything. In fact, I ordered a margarita at Chili's at 7 months pregnant and didn't even get a second glance.
(And before anyone gets all pissy at me, I've also done my research and believe that one drink every once in a while during the second half of pregnancy isn't going to harm the baby.)
No one better ever say anything to me about eating or drinking anything I do while pregnant. I am far more healthy than most pregnant women. I dont eat processed shit or fast food and never drink soda. If someone told me not to drink coffee I would bitch slap them and tell them to stop eating processed food and drinking soda. I usually drink a cup of coffee everyday. Some days I dont, some days I drink two. Dont worry about the reactions you get or the comments people make. People tend to be ignorant idiots.
I drank pop while pregnant. Same difference. I cut way back and some days didn't have any, but if someone had said something, they would've got an earful. I've seen people drinking in excess and smoking while pregnant - so if they don't get stares and comments, when why should I for having a Coke?! I also had iced capps... they have more caffeine than coffee! I just made sure I didn't have them too often.
lol actually I have family looking at me like I'm nut's because I stay clear of some things... they think I over do it... I know I don't... They just feel crappy because they never eat any veggies or fruit...
I think what ever a person decides to do and eat is up to them... I might inform a family or friend about something i read and let them make their own choice with out judgment... i mean unless of course they are taking shots or sniffing coke...
ha, I really didn't deal with this but, then again, I didn't really like coffee when I was pregnant. I did, however, drink soda. I had a good friend, at the time, who told me, "you know, megan, a coke has a ton more caffeine than a coffee does". He just couldn't believe that parents would say no to their kids having coffee, but then give them some soda. LOL. Soda does NOT have more caffeine than coffee. It just cracked me up. He wasn't trying to be mean or anything, and I knew that, but I just found it hilarious.
Eh, just try and ignore people. Clearly, they have no clue.
@Erika_Steele@xanga - Good for you! You are exactly right, she had no business making that decision for you! Way to stand up for yourself!
As with most things, it's everything in moderation. There's also a study that's recently been completed that suggests what the mother has prepares her newborn for the environment they're about to be born into. Thus, a little bit of everything is good, while it should always be maintained that the healthier the diet the better.
Absolutely nothing wrong with a cup of coffee every morning.
Go you for sticking up for yourself!
Ugh, I'd wanna slap someone if they did this to me. Fortunately, I don't have this problem. I kicked the caffeine when we started trying to get pregnant. :)
@averyswife@xanga - I live in Alabama and people were all over me about my habits when I started to show. I used to want to stab waitresses for not bringing me my steaks rare. I didn't even attempt to order a drink.
Coffee is gross but people are too addicted to caffeine if you cant wake up without coffee or pop there is an issue there. Im pregnant now but im being smart and eating right there are so many rules now its pretty much impossible to not break a few and an occasional soda is ok as long as you dont go overboard but i wouldnt have a coke every day. What other people do it their buisness but there are risks that come with things we do in pregnancy its really up to each individual person how they put their babies at risk.
What you do is your choice if you're not harming anyone else. Having a cup of coffee every morning is not harming your baby. It's really not their business.
The way I see it, you have two choices here. Either confront the people and defend yourself, or start making your coffee at home. Or of course, you could just continue the way you're going, but it's clearly bothering you, so I would go with one of the other two options.
@babixk1umzy@xanga - so happy to hear that other women drank some caffeine and everything's fine :) I already had to give up whiskey, cigarettes and sushi, what more can i do?!
@alayshaj@xanga - agreed!!
