A little over a year ago, the woman's magazine, Marie Claire, had a feature article entitled,
Stiletto Stoner. The article focused on corporate woman, with their lives seemingly in perfect order, going home every night and sparking up a joint.
Among the women interviewed, was a woman in her thirties, who pointed out that after an exhausting day of running a household with a husband and child, as well as a full-time corporate job, she needed a way to unwind. Especially since she wasn't a fan of alcohol.
So what's the big deal with moms who smoke pot, really? I in no way condone a mother smoking around her child or in the middle of the day, but we all need a way to unwind.
Being a modern mom requires having a lot on our plates and that holistic yoga business isn't for everyone. Not to mention, that marijuana is better for both brain and body than either alcohol or cigarettes; both of which are legal.
Are you or do you know a stoner mom? Do you think they should be judged any differently?

As long as it doesn't affect your kids and raising them fine. My husband smokes when he comes home from work at night but i prefer him doing it after the baby is asleep and he isn't playing with her. This i am fine with.
I feel as long as your kids are taking care of and you're not slacking in any parental duties smoking in the privacy of your on home is fine
There is nothing similar about getting drunk and getting stoned. Nothing.

For everyone who knows nothing about pot, I give you a link so you may come to understand more than just the propaganda society has shoved down your throats :)
I know one, and she's an excellent mother. People have this strange idea that you can't partake in any drugs but alcohol around your kids unless you want them to grow up to be delinquents. It doesn't really make sense to me.
I think it would be okay if marijuana was legal, but as it stands, it's not, and CPS could take your kids away if someone reported you for it. No amount of "unwinding" is worth that.
@abcdemilyk@xanga - I disagree because "it is illegal". My cousin has been caught with pot multiple times and thrown in jail for possession. Thank god she dont have children because I don't know where they would have went!
@CecilliaMarie@xanga - Thank you. If you can't find a legal, and more appropriate way to "unwind" then something is seriously wrong with you. I'm sorry, but its pretty pathetic in today's society how many people feel the need to use drugs or alcohol to have a good time or relax.
@xxxLiveLaughLove@xanga - Completely great points!
Why would anyone be willing to gamble their children's well being like that? Basically by choosing to participate in an illegal activity no matter how "harmless" you may think it is, you know this can get your children taken away from you. At the very least you'll probably be under watch by DCFS which isn't good either. So it is extremely selfish for a parent to put their desires above their family's well being.
I had a (former) best friend who was high when I went to visit her once. She had her 18 month old with her. I could see her eyes were dilated and she just was a bit off from her normal self, I knew her well enough to know she was high. Which is sad - she is a single mom and she was home alone with her daughter. Ridiculous that she did that crap. They don't call pot the "gateway" drug for nothing. She even ended up getting into harder drugs around that time until she ended up getting sick and needed a double lung transplant and later a single lung transplant again. Her mom & step dad were heavy stoners. Hmm, wonder what her daughter will grow up to be? So sad.
so what happens when your child wakes up in the middle of the night and you're stoned out of your mind? as someone who smokes... i say no.. its not okay. there is a time for play and a time for responsibility. its not about unwinding. its selfish. find another way to relax. get a treadmill or something.
@Uireb_Amarth@xanga - To you and many other people saying it, Its
LEGALfor medical use in
13states (I believe, that number may have changed). Florida, Arizona, Texas, and a few other states are looking to Decriminalize/legalize for medical use. It will not be long before its not illegal anymore.
Its used for MANY things in Colorado. From insomnia to anxiety, to dealing with the affects of Chemotherapy and pain of Fibromyalgia.
So its "illegal" is not a good excuse...I'm sorry.
@SpOnTaNeOuS_sPiTbAlL@xanga - What happens when you're doped up on Ambein and Xanax for your insomnia and anxiety?
Have you ever taken EITHER of those? I have...and its been a good night when I knew the difference between the toilet and the washing machine....
I have smoked before, even once after my son was born (I haven't smoked in about 4 years). I smoked one night with a friend to try to help with my PTSD and PPD. I played with my son, fed my son, bathed my son, etc all the things I normally do after smoking, showering, and changing clothes. He was never once in danger. There was also someone who could drive if the need arose.
There are a few levels of "head change" between buzzed and stoned.
I also had to take care of my son once after taking Trammadol. A "perfectly safe nonnarcotic opiod" according to the doctor that gave it to me. It turns out due to whatever chemical causes ADD in my brain...also causes opiods to turn me into a narcoleptic... I was ASSURED I could care for my child while using the medication. It is a medication that MANY swear by and I will never touch again..and is 100% legal. Oh hey...and the WITHDRAWAL after only a few days use was FANTASTIC.......(not...)
**Disclaimer** I'm one of those unapologetic stoners, but I do not make it a habit to do other drugs*
Both my parents have smoked pot my entire life {and long before,} It has never once had a negative effect on me. Really if it helps you relax a little bit, it will probably make you a better parent. Unless they are constantly exposed to it {and even then, I knew from the time I was ten,} it's not gonna be That big a problem; Can you say the same for Your favorite way to unwind? Christ even if you play video games to calm down, you've gotta be careful not to pick violent ones around your kids, then there are alcoholics, and other drugs...
I'm reasonably certain what I Can take from my parents stoner ways {besides, ya know, my own stoner ways,} is a greater understanding of All drugs and their potential for harm, and good, as well as the ability to think for myself when it comes to such things.
@twotonetoker@xanga - XD You wanna be careful with the edibles, ya know once kids are old enough to find them. One of the few things my Mom is Damn good at cooking are pot chocolate chip cookies, of course when I was 8 I figured these were just ordinary cookies and ate a couple whilst she showered... Didn't realize until probably a couple years ago when she told me the story...
I am, and its ridiculous how people treat marijuana. People make such a big deal about marijuana, just because its illegal. After watching numerous family members die from sorosis of the liver from pills and alcohol, I don't touch any pill or alcoholic drink.
And the other thing is WHY DO PEOPLE THINK ITS BAD TO SMOKE WHILE PREGNANT? Who put this idea into peoples heads? If I would have been over 18 during my pregnancy I could have got it medical for my nausea, I looked into it. Its no worse than smoking cigarettes its actually even better because it doesnt cause low birth weight like cigarettes, all a doctor can even say it causes is "more likely to have ADHD" which if you believe a child has a disease because they have a short attention span, then you haven't been around very many children. They have a name and a pill for every mood. So weed is sooo bad but all these pills are ok, anti depressants that cause horrible defects you constantly see on TV are ok for "depression" and these epidurals and pain killers which are terrible for you AND the baby are ok. As I said, a name and a pill for every mood. My other option to stop vomiting was khemotherapy pills that weren't tested on pregnant women and have horrible side effects, because my vomiting was so severe that was the only thing that helped. I tried those pills and I couldn't go to the bathroom and my calves were constantly so sore I could barely walk. I was also nauseous the full 9 months I was pregnant. First trimester my ass.
By the way for anyone who wants to talk shit and say "Your young and stupid and a druggie" because I know some ignorant little bitch with nothing else to do will, Im 21 and have been with my husband since I was 12, k thanks. I may look young but I'm not. And next time you feel like your going to throw up take a hit. I guarantee it will help. Its like a wonder drug.
As Resilient_Light pretty much said, the government just wants to control it basically, just like they want to control every other move we make.
I also think hiding it from your child is even worse because that makes it seem bad to them. Im not saying hey blow a bowl in front of your kid, But im saying acting all secretive is just going to make the child more interested and really think its something bad.
@SpOnTaNeOuS_sPiTbAlL@xanga -
Unless you are one of those that passes out dead when you're stoned it is Not a problem. It is a matter of personal gauge, if you know how you behave, then you know what you can get away with. Personally I can smoke myself stupid before bed and still wake up at the slightest noise. I have known parents that drink themselves to sleep, and have issues waking up, parents that take prescription sleep meds, and have issues waking up, and while I have known stoners that sleep like the dead, they are usually smart enough not to do so if they are taking care of children.
@IrresistibleInsomnia@xanga - i just feel like you may not think as clearly stoned as sober. i function fine when i'm high.. but i've never been in that situation, personally. Why RISK it? Besides.. if something does go wrong... its gonna a) look bad if you're high b) weigh in on your conscience
I bawled my eyes out when I found out my mom smoked pot, and I was like 12. I felt really alone and paranoid and scared. Of course, years later, I started smoking pot myself. But as soon as I got pregnant, I have quit for good. I just don't think it's right.... maybe when my kids are all teenagers and they smoke pot anyway, there will be no reason for me to hold back, if I even still want to after all that time.. But I'm really hoping they DON'T go down that road.. I never had a problem with marijuana before.. But my perception changed completely when I became a parent. If others parents smoke it, and are not breastfeeding, and they can still manage to be good parents, then I don't judge, of course. It's just not something I'm comfortable doing.
@caitlinbellabella - I don't agree with smoking while pregnant (cigs or pot), but I see nothing wrong with using Marijuana while pregnant for morning sickness or gestational insomnia....or a variety of other ailments....as long as its monitored and you're comfortable with possible risks (as with any medication during pregnant....or even the consumption of things like caffeinated beverages).
But smoke inhalation is what increases risk of miscarriage and low birthweights...along with other defects.
So eat or vaporize away!
The effects of Marijuana on pregnancy are still mixed because not many moms are willing to be a lab rat. So I say just know the risks and assume responsibility. I'd say in many cases the benefits outweigh the risks.
@RainDropPixie@xanga - i'm sorry for your issues but the fact is when you have a child to take care of you shouldn't do anything illegal.. there are other ways. What happens if you get some laced mary jane and you don't know it until you've smoke half a bowl? There are just too many risks. I smoke.. i LOVE to smoke... but i thoroughly believe there's a place and a time.
want some irony... my fiance just asked me where something was and at the drop of the hat, i said... upstairs, on my dresser, in front of my jewelry box.... and guess what, i smoke weed every night. Now, I dont have kids... so maybe you're all wondering why i'm even posting on here but... i just cant believe how many people buy into how bad weed is and how awful of a parent it makes you. My sister and her husband used to be HUGE potheads and when they had my niece, smoking became a very rare thing... maybe once or twice a month, if that and usually when my parents have her over night. Or we're all on vacation. And they're great parents. I strive to be as good and attentive parents as them. Clare is their world, but just like anyone else... they need some relaxing time and yes, they'll smoke a bowl.
I'm not a pothead... I use weed to honestly, calm my anxiety and help me sleep. I'm not knocked out like a xanax or an ambien would, both of which i have been or am currently prescribed to. If I were to have Clare over night, weed would probably be what I'd use to help me sleep, once i knew she was asleep, so in case she were to need something, I could wake up and be fully functioning, whether it were something serious or she just needed her mommy. I guess in a nut shell, all I'm saying is... there is a time and a place to smoke weed... I just cant understand why I, as an adult, have to worry about getting lung cancer from the guy next to me smoking a cigarette, but if i were to have a baby and my husband was putting them to bed and i "took my medicine," it'd be so wrong?
@RainDropPixie@xanga - Alcohol can make it more difficult for your body to enter REM stage of sleep. As for Ambien, I take it for insomnia and have never had side effects. Just a thought.
@SpOnTaNeOuS_sPiTbAlL@xanga - Some people don't, While I don't have kids of my own I have spent a Lot of time around them, both stoned and not. If somethings gonna go wrong chances are it's going to go wrong anyways, it's just the way children are. However I think one should avoid smoking when they have a young baby, breastfeeding and such things ya know XD Of course if one doesn't Know how they act when stoned it would be common sense to Not when in a position of responsibility. My point is that it's not just cut and dry Smoking pot makes one a bad parent.
@IrresistibleInsomnia@xanga - i'm not saying parents shouldn't smoke! when i have kids hell yeah i'm going to smoke. but its going to be when i have a babysitter or someone to watch my kids.
@SpOnTaNeOuS_sPiTbAlL@xanga - Fair enough
@CecilliaMarie@xanga - Thank you! People need to learn to relax without something that unnaturally alters their brain.
By the way, Nancy on Weeds is a dealer... she rarely actually smokes....
My dad smokes two joints a day; one before and one after work. I don't really care at all. It kept him calm and happy (he has ADHD so it helps him focus and relax) and even then... it hurts no one. There really is no problem.
