First Pre-Natal Appointment (9 weeks!): What Do I Ask My OB?
Still just pre-baby fat, but now it looks cute

This week brings one helluva cold. I figured that it would happen, but I was really hoping that it wouldn't. Like every other time I'm sick, it's all nasal drainage (and if nothing drains from there, my ears drain!), sore throat, a wicked cough and no desire to eat (I end up snacking and doing light meals).
I'm feeling better now, but not 100%...more like 75%.
In other news, I have insurance through the state now, enrolled in a specific plan, and finally have more OB choices. I ended up picking one that is closer to where I live and a female.
My first appointment with her is in exactly a week, and I'm excited! I'm trying to think if there is anything i really need to know form my doctor, but I'm not coming up with anything.
So what about you ladies- How did you handle illness during your pregnancy? Are there any big questions I should ask my doctor at this first appointment?

Just make sure your OB is a good fit for you. If you don't feel completely 100% comfortable with her, you can switch. It's not uncommon. Throughout your pregnancy, this is the woman you will be relying on to ease your nerves, explain your questions, talk you through things, and hopefully by the end of your pregnancy, you will have bonded with her a lot. If she isn't exactly what you want in an OB, switch as soon as you can! Can't stress how important this is. My OB was amazing, and she made all the difference.
Also, get excited! The first prenatal appointment is a fun one. You get to see an ultra sound of your baby, (if you haven't already) and they give you a goody bag full of fun pregnancy stuff, like The Bible for expecting mother, "What To Expect When You're Expecting" and a pregnancy date-book to record all the changes in your body and keep track of all things pregnancy/motherhood planning related. This appointment will be a lot of fun!
The only questions I can think of to ask - ask about what kinds of exercise you can do to make child birth easier for you, (walking is encouraged for most women) ask what kind of foods to stay away from, ask how much, if any, caffeine you can consume, how you should change your current habits, etc. Just basic things.
Have fun and good luck!
You look like that at 9 weeks? Oh god, I gotta get growing or something, I am still not showing at all at 11 (or 12? my boyfriend keeps better track of this than I do). I don't have my first prenatal for another week. I did see the fetus and heartbeat at 8 weeks though, so my guess is that you will see something similar (kinda peanut shaped).
I plan to ask about four wheeling, whether that doctor will be there at the birth, and about prenatal classes (since there only seems to be one class offered in my area). Otherwise, I expect the doctor to do most of the talking.
To be honest, I can't remember what questions I asked at my first appt. I think I was too nervous to even think. But, if you do come up with anything, write it down so that you can remember to ask.
I remember having a cold when I was 6-7 weeks along. It was right after we saw those two lines. I hadn't even been to the doctor yet. Anyway, I was miserable. I was throwing up, could hardly move, had congestion, aches every where. It was bad. All I wanted was some medicine to relieve it, but I was too afraid to take anything. Somehow, some way, I toughed it out and I have no idea how I did it, lol. Now that I'm not pregnant, I'm back to being a wimp.
@LupusInvictus@xanga - like i said, most of it's pre-baby fat just it looks cute now lol. also, before is was distributed more evenly, but since becoming pregnant my body has moved it all to the front of me. in all honesty i haven't gained more than 2 lbs.
I didn't ask much at the beginning. Mostly just questions about exercise and nutrition. You'll also want to know your doctor's policy on sonograms (how many are standard) and how the appointments will go. By the end of your pregnancy you'll have a whole list of questions dealing with labor and delivery.
I'm having my first prenatal appointment in ten days! I'm about eight weeks now. So this is really relevant to me. I am definitely looking forward to finally touching base with a health expert, because I feel like I've been kind of guessing about stuff by looking on the internet. But I'm definitely going to ask some of the stuff you guys recommended. Thanks.
im glad i saw this on the homepage of xanga. i am actually having my first prenatal appointment this wednesday, and i am already 19 weeks! i am very excited about this. i have so many questions and i know when the time of the appointment comes i will be so excited i will forget them all, so my plan is to write them down. a lot of questions i have had actually have been answered by google for me. so thankfully we have the internet!!! this weblog helps a lot as well. anyways, good luck with your pregnancy and congratulations!!
I am 10 weeks today and had my first prenatal appointment when I was about 7 weeks along. I only asked questions that pertained to how I felt at the moment and what I should look forward to before my next OB appointment. My next appointment with the doctor will be in 2 weeks and I'm excited to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time. Congratulations on your pregnancy! I also checked your page and saw that you are due August 8. I am due August 4th!
I am about 7 weeks and actually have my first prenatal appointment today! I meet with the nurse practitioner today, and get bloodwork, urineanalysis, etc... along w/ going over family history and answering any questions regarding the pregnancy. I'm not so sure they will be doing an ultrasound, as I believe that comes later... For me, the questions I will mainly be asking is, not only what to expect, but how does running fit into pregnancy ( I'm a runner)? I've heard it's possible to continue exercising, but ask your OB what's safe, as exercise is vital in having a healthy pregnancy as well. Also, asking questions about nutrition, even if you eat well, it's still good to ask... Also ask about prental vitamins... I'm taking prenatal vitamins already, but just want to make sure they are good. Well, Congratulations on your pregnancy! It was neat seeing this an dknowing I'm not alone as well. Yay!!!
@babixk1umzy@xanga - the funny thing is, my wedding anniversary is August 8th too! the women in my family seen to have babies around their wedding day, both my mom and my grandmother did lol! congrats and hurray for another August baby!
@Satindoll324@xanga - actually, i've had 2 other ultrasounds, one at 6 weeks and one at 7. both times they were able to detect and measure a heartbeat, you just couldn't hear it yourself. Congrats to you too!
@oscarthegrouch108@xanga - Yes, hubby and I had planned for a summer baby. We have a 4 1/2 year old daughter and she too was born during the summertime. I find that the weather during that time makes it a lot easier for me to want to get out of the house and exercise. For example, I live in NE and during this time, I want nothing more than to be indoors cuddled underneath my blanket.
my advice get a midwife and do as much research as you possibly can about your options.
