In Need of Technical Assistance for Leapster 2!!! Please Help!
Leapster 2 sucks. That's my stance until my problem gets fixed.Thomas got a Leapster 2 for Christmas. It's supposed to connect to your computer so you can download a game, track their progress, get "rewards," blah blah blah. But ours won't connect.
It comes with a CD you're supposed to install, but since my computer doesn't have a CD drive, I went the alternate route and downloaded it. Supposedly that's not the problem, 'cause I tried downloading it again when it wouldn't work, and it said I had already successfully downloaded it.
I plug the leapster in. I turn it on. Leapster Connect comes up on my computer screen. Suddenly a window pops up: You must first plug in the leapster, then turn it on. The order is important. If the leapster is on when you plug it in, it will not work.
Um... I thought that's what I did. Maybe not. I turn it off, unplug it, start from square one. Plug it in. Turn it on. Same message.
Two more times of that and it's a miracle I didn't chuck the thing out the window.
I first tried to connect on Christmas or the day after. So after trying it again today, with the same results, I am discouraged. Perplexed. P-O'd.
I reviewed all the troubleshooting tips on the Leap Frog website. I looked up my problem on the customer support discussion boards, where several people had the same complaint. Then an actual leap frog tech made a visit (Hail the conquering hero!!!) only to repeat, verbatim, the troubleshooting tips on the leap frog website. (String him up! Tar and feather him!!!)
I read complaints from people who called the help line and got NO help but instead a person repeating, verbatim, the troubleshooting tips on the leap frog website.
Maybe their products would be cheaper if they instead hired parrots whom they could pay in crackers.
So now I am coming to you, my kind and knowledgeable Xanga and Momaroo readers, for assistance.
Maybe you own one of these pieces of crap toys and have a solution. Maybe you are the head guy of leap frog and would like an opportunity to defend your company and hardworking employees. Maybe you think I am silly for not having chucked it out the window days ago.
Please, please, please, please help me!!!!!
Does anyone have Leapster 2 or have any idea what we should do to get it to work?

wish i could help, but we bought A____ a leapster explorer, it works wonderfully and he loves it.
maybe if you cant get it to work you can take it back and buy an explorer?
I emailed customer support, and they emailed me back, verbatim, the troubleshooting steps from the website-- after I said in my email that I had tried all those things.
I replied, saying I had already tried those things and that I was very discouraged, especially considering their discussion forums are FILLED with people complaining of the same problem.
They asked me if I had tried turning off my firewall settings.
No. I turned off my firewall. I don't know how to turn off firewall settings. Turning off the firewall was another suggestion taken directly from their website. And what's more, it didn't work.
Maybe I'm wrong here, but I don't think I should have to be a computer genius to get a kid's toy to work the way it's supposed to. After messing with it for a few more hours last night, I'm done. I'm glad my son is too young to know what he's missing. And I'm certainly going to do my research before I give these people any more money.
@reanimated_corpse@xanga - We went the Explorer route, too. I had a $10 off coupon and it was on sale on Thanksgiving, so we only ended up paying, like, $40 for it. And Aaron loves it. Like, if he had opened it first, I doubt any other gifts would have been unwrapped.
@JenHamrick@xanga - If you decide you want an Explorer, let me know. I still have another $10 coupon & I could send it to you.
Good luck Mama!
It's sad that you're having such a difficult time. We bought the Leapster2 from Walmart on their Black Friday sale. Before seeing the half off Black Friday Walmart price, we were all set to buy the Leapster Explorer (though it has less games for now).
Thankfully, we've had no problems connecting our Leapster2 to our computer.
The only issue we did have was that you can't delete more than 1 of 3 player profiles on it (my son went and created one for him, his sister (who's 14 months and won't be playing anytime soon) and then one where he just put a bunch of gibberish letters together. So we looked on the LF website & they mentioned you can delete a profile, but never mentioned how or its limitations. So I had to look on the community boards & found it there thankfully. Only you can only delete 1 of the 3 after all 3 slots are filled. Stinks but no big deal.
I hope that someone is able to help you as this is actually a pretty cool toy & it is the one my son plays with the most (though he got a lot of cool gifts like Alphie). It's a great learning toy.
return it, get the kid an ipod :]
@kristinabean@xanga - i cant keep my soon off of it now, which is working out well since i am pregnant with #2 and really tired all of the time right now! lol. we also got him the camera attachment for it, and he LOVES it! best christmas investment i have made in a long time
@reanimated_corpse@xanga - Aaron bought the camera with his Christmas money from Granny. He's having a great time with it! I could have gotten the Leapster 2 for $25... but the e-reader and the easier to see screen (my little guy has awful vision-- he's been in glasses for a year now, and with the specs his sight is about 20/60), it seemed worth the extra $15 I paid for the Explorer.
@Kimmybeth@xanga - I loved my Alphie when I was a kid!! I didn't see that he was back on the market until we'd exhausted this year's Christmas budget... but I can see him making an appearance on Easter morning. (My kid's birthdays' aren't until October & November... we try to do one "big" Easter gift to keep the coll new stuff spaced out through the year.)
Its probably the Firewall settings not allowing it to connect. To allow the Leapster 2 program to connect. Start > Control Panel > System And Security > Windows Firewall > Allow a program through Windows Firewall > (find the Leapster program, and click on it). And thats it. I hope that helps
call the company directly. keep working your way up the chain til you get the help you need. you might also need to uninstall and reinstall the programs
Thanks for all your responses!
@kristinabean@xanga - Thanks, that's very nice of you to offer.
@Thin_Wishes13@xanga - I think I tried that (I tried every single thing I found on the internet plus everything else I could think of-- twice!), but maybe in a few days I'll go back at it again.
@dr52383@xanga - I did try uninstalling and reinstalling. What's unfortunate is that lots of people have called the company and gotten no help.
It seems like it's not a defective product but one that only works with a computer under very specific conditions, and if your computer isn't already set up that way, you have to be quite tech-savvy to make the whole thing work. I think it's really a poorly designed product.
If you go on the Leapster site where it says to download the leapster connect an scroll down a little bit it says having problems downloading? an gives a link to another download....Thats the one that worked with my daughters leapster 2
I am too in need of help with my grandson's leapster2. We have tried many things with no sucess. Maybe someone can help me. The screen won't leave the sign in menu. When I try to callabrate the pen, I get no white dots to touch. What now.
Will you be able to help me soon or do I have to wait for a few days?
my son leapster2 it won't let me trun on I went to youtube nothing what to do it wont do nothing at all
I bought the Leapster2 on black friday, 2012. I have a Mac powerPC. I had to download an alternate installer for the connect software. I get nothing but error messages and it won't allow me to download the free game as promised on the packaging. Needless to say, I think I am going to return this piece of junk.
Turn off your leapster. Unplug it. The next one seems important-Close the Leapster Connect App. Plug back in the Leapster, Turn it on and the App should open on it's own and re-connect. Please respond if this works for you!
