  • Tell Me Thursday, Part 2!

As promised, “Tell Me Thursday” is back for its second weekly installation.  And it’s time to shake things up a bit!  Be fair-warned, we’re going to ask for a bit more than your favorite color.

While the questions are different every week, the rules stay the same: be honest, no judging, and have fun!

    1.       What food do you make/order for your kids in the hopes they won’t eat it?  You know, so you can scarf it down later in the name of waste reduction?

We went through a phrase where it seemed like no matter what new restaurant we tried, the only thing on the kid’s menu was chicken fingers.  Avery hates chicken fingers.  I continued to order them anyway.  When Hubbs tried to interrupt to remind me of that fact, I kicked him under the table and asked the waitress for extra honey mustard dipping sauce.

    2.       What’s the worst thing you’ve accidentally blurted out in front of your kids and later watched in horror as they repeated it?

A car cut us off in traffic last summer.  Long story short, Avery spent the afternoon screaming “F@ck!” out the window.

    3.       What do your kids think a tampon is for?

Avery pulled a box of them out the other day and asked me, “Boo boos for your hoo hoo?”  Since she wasn’t half-wrong, I didn’t bother correcting her.

    4.       What’s the most disgusting thing you ever ate while pregnant and LOVED?

I used to heat up refried beans, frozen corn, and shredded cheese on the stove, and then eat it by the spoonful out of the same pot I cooked it in.  My kitchen looked like we adopted a sick dog.  Why couldn't I just crave pickles like everyone else?

    5.       What’s the most embarrassing outfit your kid has left the house wearing?

Monkey pajamas, winter coat, pink sandals on the wrong feet, and a roll of duct tape for a bracelet.  And no, I didn’t care.

    6.       What’s the longest you’ve let your child “cry it out” for?

I was too afraid to try it until my in-laws visited when Avery was about 8 months old.  After hearing their advice, I put Avery down for a nap, she whimpered for 3 minutes and was out like a light.  She never had a problem falling asleep again.

    7.       Are you done having kids?  Have you or your partner had the “Procedure”?

Nope!  Like a goldfish, I have learned nothing.  Still hoping for a few more.

    8.       Have you ever used your kids as an excuse for not showing up to an event?

If by “event,” you mean law school, then yes.

    9.       What do you hope your children will remember most about their childhoods?

I hope Avery will one day appreciate that I do allow her a fair amount of freedom, despite her questionable decision-making.  I encourage her to try new things, even though I usually have to bite my tongue to do so.

    10.   Perhaps more importantly, what do you hope they forget?

    See Numbers 1 through 5.

Okay mommas, let’s hear it!  Cut and paste these questions into the Comments section and post your answers below.

    1.       What food do you make/order for your kids in the hopes they won’t eat it?  You know, so you can scarf it down later in the name of waste reduction?

We get Chinese takeout a lot. My son loves it, daughter hates it. So I order her a child size lo mein with crab rangoon instead of an egg roll. Paige gets a peanut butter sandwich & mommy gets lunch the next day.

    2.       What’s the worst thing you’ve accidentally blurted out in front of your kids and later watched in horror as they repeated it?

I told my husband not to let Paige see his milkshake because "ice cream is like crack to this kid." Paige has spent the week since yelling "CRACK!" at random moments. In church, at my mother-in-law's, during a newborn portrait session I had to take her to with me...

    3.       What do your kids think a tampon is for?

I loathe tampons, so I don't know that my kids have ever seen one. But Aaron calls pads "Mommy Diapers."

    4.       What’s the most disgusting thing you ever ate while pregnant and LOVED?

I lived on plain pasta & crackers & juice most of the time that I was pregnant with Aaron. With Paige, I only wanted spicy Mexican & Chinese food.

    5.       What’s the most embarrassing outfit your kid has left the house wearing?

Paige wants to wear a costume every day. Some days she's a dragon, or a unicorn, or a witch. But usually we're some variation on a fairy or a princess (or something in between)... If it's not a full-blown costume, it's a tutu over her jeans.

    6.       What’s the longest you’ve let your child “cry it out” for?

I never really have. I rock Paige to sleep at night if she's fussy (otherwise she just lays down on her own and goes right to sleep) & Aaron usually zonks out during his story.

    7.       Are you done having kids?  Have you or your partner had the “Procedure”?

I'm done. My body is not a good host. No procedures yet, but mine is scheduled! We would like to adopt more kids when ours are older & we're a little more stable financially.

    8.       Have you ever used your kids as an excuse for not showing up to an event?

Often. Any time I really don't want to do something, I magically can't find a babysitter.

    9.       What do you hope your children will remember most about their childhoods?

I don't remember my childhood as being particularly happy. I want my kids to remember all of the time we spend laughing & spending time together. I want them to remember happiness.

    10.   Perhaps more importantly, what do you hope they forget?

My husband & I separated for a little while shortly after Paige's first birthday. I want Aaron to forget that, because it was a particularly hard time for him. He's really sensitive & emotional... I just hope that time in our lives doesn't end up a prominent traumatic memory.

    1.
What food do you make/order for your kids in the hopes they won’t eat
it?  You know, so you can scarf it down later in the name of waste
    reduction?

    Ummm...I order my own food.

    2.       What’s the
worst thing you’ve accidentally blurted out in front of your kids and
later watched in horror as they repeated it?

    (While driving!)  Move it, Grandpa!

    3.
What do your kids think a tampon is for?

Two of them already use them.  They know what they're for.

    4.       What’s the most
disgusting thing you ever ate while pregnant and LOVED?

I craved Egg McMuffins.  Not very disgusting, but I also loved everything salty:  popcorn & beef jerkey, especially!

    5.       What’s the most embarrassing
outfit your kid has left the house wearing?

Some of the tight stuff my oldest daughter wears out that I don't really think looks good on her, but nothing too embarrassing.

    6.       What’s the longest you’ve let
your child “cry it out” for?

45 minutes of sleep training for my first child.  Don't think any of them every cried longer than that - not even close, but that's because we started her sleep training late.

    7.       Are you done having kids?  Have you
or your partner had the “Procedure”?

Absolutely and the man went in for his snipping while I was pregnant with my third child.  Apparently he passed out during the procedure, which he admits was only strangely uncomfortable, and took a swing at the doctor.

    8.       Have you ever used your kids
as an excuse for not showing up to an event?

I'm sure I have.  I also let them use me for that same excuse.

    9.       What do you hope your children will
    remember most about their childhoods?

All the interesting places they got to travel and knowing their grandparents more than I knew mine.

    10.   Perhaps more importantly,
what do you hope they forget?

My bout with depression while we were abroad and the very distant relationship I had with my husband at the time.  I was very irritable then...

    1.       What food do you make/order for your kids in the hopes they won’t eat it?  You know, so you can scarf it down later in the name of waste reduction?

Aurora used to be a MUCH pickier eater, so this part got hard, but I LOVE making lasagna, and she hasn't developed a taste for it yet... score!

    2.       What’s the worst thing you’ve accidentally blurted out in front of your kids and later watched in horror as they repeated it?

I'm a bit of a potty mouth so at the one year point, aurora had dropped more than a few s-bombs, I've replaced the word for "sugar" but she uses it in the same way I do... whoops.

    3.       What do your kids think a tampon is for?

She's seen them in the cabinets but I avoid putting them in when she's around. She does like the colorful packaging but mostly leaves them alone because it's mommy's stuff.

    4.       What’s the most disgusting thing you ever ate while pregnant and LOVED?

I'm not a big fan of the fried foods, but I was on a mission to find the perfect deep-fried chicken for 7 of my 8.5 months.

    5.       What’s the most embarrassing outfit your kid has left the house wearing?

Um, I try to keep her as well-dressed as possible. But I do recall a neon green sweatshirt over black and white zebra pants... I promise it looked cute!

    6.       What’s the longest you’ve let your child “cry it out” for?

Five to ten minutes, now that she's older I can spot her pointless crying. A few weeks ago, she genuinely didn't want to be comforted though, so she just hid under her bed and cried. After about five minutes she fell asleep under there. When I went to move her she woke up and started crying again... yeah

    7.       Are you done having kids?  Have you or your partner had the “Procedure”?

I'm pretty sure I'm done, it would be nice, but I really can't see it happening. I've been considering the procedure for a while, but since I'm in my twenties I know doctors won't exactly be thrilled about performing it on me.

    8.       Have you ever used your kids as an excuse for not showing up to an event?

Allll the time, but mostly she's my excuse for being late. Which, if anyone knows me, I've been chronically late since I came out of the womb, so my kid really doesn't make me much later.

    9.       What do you hope your children will remember most about their childhoods?

How great she is at pretend, and how much attention she was given by my entire family. I hope she remembers how much she was loved.

    10.   Perhaps more importantly, what do you hope they forget?

I have my bouts of depression every few months, I hope she remembers me as being always pleasant and energetic.

It IS ridiculously impossible to find a willing doctor. I'm 25 and absolutely cannot carry another child. But I can't find a doctor who will perform a tubal on me unless I have ANOTHER birth control failure or I turn 30.
