Maternity Leave in California?
I've been on maternity leave, receiving State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits, since September 17th. I'm coming up on my last check and the 12 week mark to return to work.However I am aware that with the last SDI check they mail a form for Paid Family Leave (PFL) baby bonding time that I can take and get additional pay for 6 weeks. I would love, love, love an additional six weeks home with my handsome baby boy. I feel like I just left work yesterday, and here it is almost time to go back.
My question is, does anybody know how I inform my employer of this additional six weeks baby bonding time? If with the application they mail me something for my employer, or if I just tell them. I don't want them to come at me saying I can't take it, when everything I've read shows clearly that I can.
Has anyone else been able to use PFL in addition to SDI? Any advice or input would be appreciated.

Just talk to them. If hey say you can't tell them you know that you can by law. You know your choices so they can't really do anything about it. lol I know you want avoid confrontation...
Oooh! I'm so jealous! I was told by my boss that they would let me have 4 weeks off after having my baby and then I am expected to at least work from home. :(
Talk to your doctor and see if he will give you a note for your work... they cant fire you then. And normally and paid family leave is a legal option and they can't not take you back to work. If fo some reason they do fire you.. you get unemployment or a strong case t sue. ( if your report it to the family medical act)
I was able to take 6 weeks SDI and 6 weeks PFL. I'm curious how you were able to get 12 weeks of SDI.
I would talk to your doctor and someone in the HR department at your office. While the state may be willing to pay you for an additional 6 weeks, I believe your company is only required to keep your job for you up for 12 or 16 weeks (I can't remember exactly how long). If your employer is willing to let you take 6 more weeks, then I would totally do it!
wowzers .. here in Ontario a birth parent can take up to 35 weeks, with Mat-benefits covered between the government and the employer.. My husband can even take 3 months off when we adopt.
Paid leave and job protected leave are two separate issues.
In CA the Pregnancy Disability Act provides job protected leave if you miss work prior to delivery. The CA Family Rights Act allows for an additional 12 weeks of job protected leave to care for your newborn.
If your twelve weeks includes time prior to delivery you should be OK - provided your employer is subject to the rules. Employers with less than 50 employees are exempt from CFRA
@alextebow@xanga - Actually for SDI I was paid 4 weeks prior & 6 weeks after, so 10. I guess 9 since they don't pay you that first week. Sorry I meant that with FMLA I'm off work for 12 weeks & I know once the 10 week period for SDI is up they mail you the PFL bonding form for the additional 6 weeks. .

Depends. Usually if you take PFL, you have to inform your place of work at least 30 days in advance (or so Wal-Mart PFL works, according to a training program I went through when I got hired there).
You are so lucky! Sorry I'm not answering the question, but just wanted to say in both SC (used to live) and NC (currently live) you are guaranteed your job for a certain amount of time (not positive of the amount) but with NO PAY, unless it's something you're employer does, which I've never heard of any doing here. I'm not even married yet and stockpiling my sick time (accrues w/o limit) because not working for 6 weeks and missing those paychecks would really hurt with a newborn in the house! For some reason I thought all states were like that... awesome to know some aren't!
Hmm. I'd just come outright & say you want more time with your son & you'd like 6 more weeks. Otherwise, what about quitting & doing the stay at home mum thing for awhile? I dunno if you have any monetary support to be able to do that but in the long run you save so much on child care, could do a work at home job, & could always go back to working if you decide you don't want to do it anymore. =]
does anyone knows what I need to do, my job supplements my PFL which pays at 100%, but I am confuse because I receive a form with my PFL checks saying that I must report that amount to the IRS. Would that means that I need to report whatever I get from my job on top of the PFL checks, so in that case why do I need to turn those checks to my work? I appreciate any help on this case.
