Worst Parenting Advice Ever
I spoke to a few people on what they thought was the worst advice they ever received (or maybe even heard of) when it came to being a parent. These are just a few:
1. Smacking your child's gums with a spoon to see if they are teething. Or even putting whiskey on the child's gums to take away the pain from teething.
2. Letting them play with ice cubes; apparently they will melt before the child even chokes.
3. Swaddling the child doesn't allow the muscles in their arms to grow, therefore causing their arms to become deformed.
4. Stay indoors with your child for the first two months, no outside adventures.
5. Apparently tickling your child's feet can make them go crazy.
6. Spray water in the child's face when they throw a fit.
7. If they get their days and nights mixed up, lay them on their back, grab their ankles and flip them over vertically onto their belly. Then grab their arms and flip them over to their back again. Then repeat several times.
8. Tape their ears to their head so they don't stick out.
So tell me, have you heard any of these? What bad parenting advice have you been given or heard?

i agree with number 4 if it's winter. if i have a baby in december, no fucking way am i taking that baby outside until it warms up. newborns are too small and too susceptable to sickness.
however, i think the rest of these sound completely idiotic!
Ever had a toddler who's throwing a genuine temper tantrum that they can not get under control without help from you? And you need to do something to "shock" them so they CAN stop? Spraying them with water in the face WORKS. I've only done it 1 or 2 times but it certainly DID work. It's not the same idea as spraying your cat when they do something wrong. It's a way of SHOCKING them so that they have the ability to stop.
you must know my relatives or the people you know read the same advice book my relatives read.
I think my favorite piece of advice was if you let your baby sleep at the foot of the crib (or bed) it will start sleeping through the night and staying awake in the day time. Sleeping in the bed backwards eliminates the confusion between day and night that babies have.
@infinitely_invisible@xanga - Yea, I agree with you on not taking the kids out during the winter. Also, during the super hot months is probably not a good idea either.
i was a toddler from hell. i mean i was BAD. and my parents never sprayed me in the face with water. that just sounds cruel to me.
Well, I didn't receive this advice but my aunt did about 20 years ago. Her kids were really skinny--they had very high metabolisms and were maybe 2 or 3. She took them to the doctor and he put them on this very high fat diet. They did gain a healthy weight but continued to eat the same way even after their metabolisms became normal. Right before they went into middle school, they started to become overweight. Now they're in their early 20's, trying to get the weight off and can't. They're eating less and healthier and exercising and just can't get the weight off. I think they would've been just fine if she didn't take them to that doctor.
To sweat out a fever. That's used to be the advice, however, now it's to cool them off, keep them covered with something light so they don't overheat. My mom is still insistent on sweating it out. Which is why she doesn't take care of my kids when they're sick LOL.
Only #4, which I ignored. My daughter was a summer baby, though. Probably would have been more cautious during the flu season. We basically took her out for drives and to restaurants. We didn't take her to malls or big stores, for a little while. I don't think taking babies out for walks is a big deal, as long as you make sure they are bundled up or not overheating.
I've heard that teaching babies to sign will keep them from talking. Bullhonky.
Oh, and that classic about making lots of noise when the baby is sleeping so he'll be a good sleeper later? Maybe it works, but who wants to take the chance of waking a sleeping baby? Not me!
The thing about ice cubes is true. My dad used to give me ice cubes to suck on while I was teething, and I never choked.
i just heard the flip your baby over one and thought to myself "you've got to be kidding me..." i suppose if you believe it will work mb it will...me I'll just refrain from flipping my child thanks
My grandmother use to tape down my uncle's ears when he was a baby but I've never tried it!
#4 is nuts cause there is no way for most people to stay indoors for 2 months. Although I agree during cold and flu seaon it is best to take the baby out the least possible.
The spraying water in the face works, I have done it,. It does not hurt them and they are talking just a quick mist. Not with the hose. I have just fliped water with my hand in thier face to get them to stop. I have also blown on thier face makes them stop and think "what was that"
as for taping thier ears some kids have ears and point out really really bad,. I rather do that then put them through medically fixing it. It is no differant then the helment my daughter wore to shape her head right.
@JenHamrick@xanga - I was told by my grandpa something to that effect- to not be extra quite when the baby was sleeping, walk around normal and do your normal things and they would sleep though it cause they heard all the nosies befor they where born. It worked though my kids will sleep threw anything..
Some of it just sounds like child abuse.
Someone once told me that if the babys soft spot drops you have to flip them upside down by their ankles and hit their feet really hard. So the soft spot goes back up.
They also told me if my son has red eye to blow cigarette smoke in their face....
Another one was to give them an onion to chew on so they will get their teeth.
What's so wrong with the whiskey on the gums trick? It's not like you're pouring whiskey down the baby's throat, you're dabbing it on their gums to numb them, none even gets swallowed.
You forgot the "tape a quarter to the belly button so they don't have an outie." BULLSHIT.
@milfncookies@xanga -
Agreed!!!! It worked for my son LIKE A CHARM. Nothing worked, and the whiskey was like a miracle worker!
Someone told me to NEVER ever wake my baby even for feedings. They said that all newborns just "know" when they are hungry. Not so much...
My son was born 4 weeks ago (today!), and we go out as LITTLE as possible because of how cold it is. The only time he is outside is getting him in and out of the car as fast as possible. It is already too cold for him to go anywhere and once snow hits the ground we will only be going out for dr. visits. So I can totally understand number 4.
And as number 6 goes, a quick spray of water in the face does not hurt the little one. As long as it isn't an overkill of water or super cold/hot. My dad use to blow air into my face when I was little to get me to stop crying, and it worked for him. I'm pretty sure I turned out just fine. :)
@opster25 - yeah it's totally true!!! Vaccum, listen to music, do whatever you want, and they'll be good sleepers
@mydearparker@xanga - yeah that's a crock of shit. I woke my son to feed him every two hours (my breasts would fill up and become painful) so I had to!
formula keeps them fuller longer, so if you're formula feeding, it's not a big deal.
# 7 ???
#4 isn't bad, in my opinion. It gives time for the baby's immune system to develop. Mom basically did this with us and we never got sick when we were kids.Â
It's really hard not to go out at all for two months, especially if you don't have anyone else to watch your kids and you need groceries or medicine. It's not like I was carrying my babies around wearing only onesies and socks in January. You couldn't even see them in their car seats because they were bundled up.
@Xbeautifully_broken_downX@xanga - ??? the only way for the baby's immune system is to expose them. Which is why we give kids shots. To expose thier systems and build thier immune systems.. Now don't get me wrong it is not good to take them out and let everyone cough all over them, Premature babys need to stay away from all illness not to build thier immune system. But to prevent them from getting the illness because they are not big enough to fight it off. You do not want them to get the Flu or RSV, but keeping them inside will not build thier immune system.
