So the holidays are coming up and we are going to be needing a TON of baby stuff since this is our first baby. I figured we might as well register before Christmas so if people are stumped about what to get us, they can just choose something off the registry. (Baby's not due until the end of April, oh well!)
After doing a little bit of research online I found a couple of recommendations to create a "universal registry" on Amazon.com. I still remember the whole registry process from getting married 3 years ago, and I remember being frustrated about the lack of choices in the stores we registered in- more specifically, the local stores we have that didn't carry everything they had on the web sites.
So, after some thinking and researching, I think we may do a traditional registry at Target and do an online registry at Amazon, too. It seems like a great way to get EVERYTHING we want, and to get the best price and quality for our friends and family who are doing the buying.
Not only can you add anything listed on Amazon, but you can add anything from any other web site (including Target!). The only downfalls are the shipping and convincing my family members who don't like buying online. So here's my question...
Where and when did you register for your baby? Would you consider registering online?

We are big book lovers here so yes, I would do Amazon. We actually have a "wish list" for Christmas books for our 3yr old, because we have family out of country and ordering online is cheaper then buying/shipping gifts.
When we have our own babes (we foster now) we will have a Babys R Us online registry, and probably one from Sears. Mostly because I already have my personal wish-lists on both sites and I can just assign them as wish lists. Again, saves family/friends from far away money if they want to get us anything.
Also Amazon here in Canada has free shipping, so its a big bonus.
I've been making up an Amazon wish list for my son so that I can give people a link to it for christmas, etc. and they will have an idea of the things he'd like. But in my mind it's not asking them to BUY on amazon. It's just a good way to show them what he'd like. I don't care where they buy stuff. You can let people know that they are welcome to buy stuff wherever they want to and that the list on amazon is just suggestions about things you need/want.
I know exactly what you mean. My cousin just had a baby and almost every single thing on her registry (from Target AND Burlington) was available online only. What a pain. I think when you do that, you make it much harder for people to stick to the registry, and then you defeat the purpose, getting lots of duplicates and maybe NOT getting some of the essentials. I'd stick to brick-and-mortar stores, or at least register mostly for stuff that isn't online-only.
@JenHamrick@xanga - A lot of people don't use the registry right anyway and we ended up with tons of duplicates with a brick-and-mortar store.
We had a wedding and baby registry on Amazon. (have a wish list for our LO there too) We loved being able to add anything and everything... instead of having registries at bunch of different brick & mortar stores. The free shipping on Amazon items was nice too.
But I'm of the generation of people who actually prefer shopping online rather than going to the stores. Half the time BRU or Target doesn't have the item I want, or they don't have the right size/color/whatever. When it's online I can have it shipped directly to the recipient's house. I like just giving a card at the baby shower that says, "we ordered xxxx from your registry. Enjoy!"
We still got a lot of items that weren't on our registry, especially at my baby shower. I figured that most of the guests didn't think to order a gift in enough time to order it. It was kind of annoying because my baby shower was 400 miles from my home, and I had to lug all that stuff back with me.
If anything, the Amazon registry was a way for people to see what we wanted... even if they ended up buying it somewhere else.

@sarahsmurfette@xanga - Yeah, and unfortunately a lot of store employees don't know what to do with the registry either. I mean, I guess you can't complain when people are giving you gifts, but it kinda stinks sometimes. :)

I created my baby registry on Amazon, just because there were tons of choices and didn't feel confined to just what one store's inventory. If someone buys something off your registry, but from a brick-and-mortar place, they can easily "reserve" that item on your registry (to avoid duplicates)
I might just get married to amazon.com itself.
