Princess No-Sew Tulle Skirt Tutorial
Princess tulle skirts are incredibly quick and easy to make. I've tried to keep the directions as simple as possible. Enjoy!
You will need the following:
- Scissors
- 1/4" Elastic, cut to approximate waist size
- Rolls of 6" tulle (easily found in wedding section of crafty stores)
- 1 yard of coordinating satin ribbon
For this skirt, I used 2 rolls of tulle, combined equaling 150 yards. Yes, yards! You may use more or less, depending on the style you desire and the size of the child. My Purple Princess skirt was made for a 2T child.
Cut the tulle into strips based on your double desired length. I wanted my skirt to be 12 inches long, so my strips needed to be 24 inches long. (A 2ft skirt would need 4ft strips, etc...) Tulle is not always the friendliest fabric to cut neatly, so I cheated. I found a 12 inch book. By wrapping the tulle around the book repeatedly, I made a continuous 24" loop. I then slid my scissors under the loop and cut through all the layers at once. I was left with a huge pile of 2ft strips. Perfect! You can also use tulle yardage to cut into 6" strips, but I'm not friends with my scissors.

You will then need to cut a piece of 1/4" elastic long enough to fit around your child's waist. Tie a knot into the two loose ends of elastic, making a waist sized "rubber band" of sorts.
Next, select two strips of tulle. Gather the four loose ends in one hand, making a loop.
Slide the end of the loop under your elastic. Send the loose ends back through, then pull tight. I'm sure this is some Boy Scout knot, but I don't know the name, lol, so I call it a loop knot.

Continue making loop knots on the elastic until you run out of tulle. My elastic tended to stretch out with all the loops being tied on, so I just retied my knot and clipped off the extra.

Take a moment to admire your poofy handiwork.

Using one yard of satin ribbon, tie a pretty bow over the elastic knot. You have now completed your pretty Princess tulle skirt!

The fun variations are countless! For the pastel one above, I used pink and white tulle both. I alternated the loop colors and used a sing piece of tulle to create each loop. A fun variation I am considering for Halloween is lime green and black to wear over black tights. Let your creativity soar!

thats a great idea
This is super cute.
I love this tutorial! I think this would be a great costume idea for a lil girl or even a present. Thanks so much for sharing!
That. Is. Awesome!
Those are so adorable. My little cousins would love them. How much does it cost to make approximately?
I am so gunna do this! (It's a slip knot.)
My sister made herself a tulle skirt (originally as an underpart for her homemade twisted alice costume) but instead of the elastic and worrying about it gaping when it stretched to be worn she tied her tulle onto her ribbon and then just tied the ribbon ends into a bow to wear. ^-^. (Just a variation for adults? For children the elastic is much safer I'm sure ;D.)
I'm 18 and I will probably make one for myself. xP
OMG! This is SUPER cute and simple! I'm definitely going to make it for Halloween. Thanks for sharing!! :D
Lovely!
Every girl, no matter how much of a tomboy she is, should have one tutu as she grows up, just to see what it's like to be a ballerina princess.
@planetlovee@xanga - Tulle spools run between $2-$5 depending on stores. The elastic was $1 and ribbon was $1.50. I spent $6 on the pink one and $9 on the purple.
@avariellefaye@xanga - I didn't use ribbon around because it won't stay tied. For the bigger adult ones, I stretch the elastic around a tub lid before tying on the tulle. No gaping.
What a great idea! So cute! :)
OMG I need to get to a craft store RIGHT NOW, haha, I want to try this so bad!
"I'm not friends with my scissors" - love it! :D
