Diaper Cake DIY Instructions
Littlemisstomato is one super crafty momma! You may remember that she threw a baby shower for her friends Lisa & Eubin that featured the adorable diaper cake below. Littlemisstomato is back sharing how she creates her diaper cakes!
When I made my first diaper cake, I found lots of tutorials using a baby bottle or bottle of champagne in the middle, rolling up the individual diapers and just adding on lots of miscellaneous items that I didn't know if parents actually wanted (besides champagne maybe
).I also thought a lot of them looked tacky and overdone, so I ended up making all the baby shower diaper cakes another way this year. I took these photos while making Baby Ari's diaper cake (large size):
Supplies
- cake stand (re-usable & can be trimmed with matching ribbon) or cardboard cut into a circle for transporting cake
- double sided tape
- ribbons
- size 1 & newborn diapers
- twine
- optional: receiving blanket to decorate/wrap around cake layerArranging the Diapers
Instead of rolling each diaper & tying with elastic, I like to just fold it in half. I feel like once the mom-to-be uses the diaper, or puts them away, it's easy for her to unfold once, and there are no elastics to deal with. When folding, I like to show only the white side to make it easier when decorating later on. I also use a large piece of twine to keep the folded diapers in place since they are basically loose.

Just keep filling the diapers inside the twine until you reach your desired base size. Then tie the twine securely to keep the diapers in place. If it's a very large base layer, fill in with another layer of folded diapers. In the very center, you can use 1 rolled up diaper if you want to make sure the whole layer is filled, but it's fine without it too.

Keep repeating the twine/folded diaper for each layer, making them smaller/larger to scale. I like to have 3 layers.

Decorating & Toppers
Once the layers are done, you can decorate with coordinated ribbons. In Ari's pink diaper cake below, I used a receiving blanket to cover the middle layer then trimmed with ribbon. You can also use chip board letters (from Michaels or other craft store) for the baby initial.

In Sandy's diaper cake (below), I made the toppers from baby animal stickers that I attached to little skewers.

Lately, I've been using baby shoes if I find colors that match. Also, I like to put a circle of scrap booking paper on the very top layer so you don't see the folded diapers underneath.

Have you ever tried to make a diaper cake? What are some of your favorite baby shower decor ideas?

Nah, we like real cake!
Love it! These are really beautiful! I received a diaper cake at one of my showers and you're right about the elastics. I loved the diaper cake, I loved having so many diapers ready to be used....except for pulling elastic off EVERY SINGLE ONE! Your idea is excellent.
I do believe I will be saving this page for future reference next time I have a shower to attend! :D
at first i was hoping for a cake shaped like a diaper (silly me)
but these are SO cute
Those are pretty cute - and creative :)
Thanks for this!! My cousin is expecting in February and I will bookmark this post so I can make one of these for her!! :)

Thank you very good and a healthy writing. Some things in here I have not thought about before.I am very happy with your post. Thanks a lot.
I got a diaper cake for a shower, and I learned that the individually rolled up diapers are great for diaper bags! It keeps the inside of the diaper (the part that will be on my baby's delicate skin) away from anything else that might be inside the diaper bag, no matter how long it is in there. No more frayed diapers!
This post will definitely help readers like me.Thanks for sharing such a great article with us.Keep blogging.
How do you keep the cake layers together? With the aforementioned champagne bottle or baby bottle, at least the layers don't shift.
Sidenote: For you crunchy mama's out there or for a baby shower for a eco-friendly, earth mama to be, cloth diapers (pre-fold's) can easily be exchanged for the disposables! :) What a great gift to an expectant mother and to the earth :)
After reading your post I made my own!

Thank you sharing!! I made on today for the first time. I used a weaved belt to make the size circle I wanted for each tier, put the diapers inside the belt and then tied it with the twine. It worked great!!
How are you attaching the layers and how many diapers did you end up using? I would love to make one for a friend, but not sure how many I need. Thanks for the tutorial!
How many diapers do you actually use? say I wanted to "Try" to make one how many would I need to buy? I am looking for a nice gift to make for my sister for her baby shower in October and this would be perfect!
@dabigblk758@xanga - I don't know how the author did it, but I imagine you could use something like double-sided tape squares, or even velcro picture hanger tabs (both removable without damaging the merchandise).
thank you!
