  • I'd Rather Give Birth Than Get My Blood Drawn...

My husband and I went to the hospital on Tuesday morning to get an ultrasound to confirm our dates. The ultrasound tech was fantastic!

She could tell immediately that I was way earlier than the date on my chart. In fact, I was so early that she had to do a trans-vaginal ultrasound instead (which meant I could go empty my bladder, HALLELUJAH!). Based on the ultrasound, she moved my due date from April 6, 2011 to April 15, 2011... Tax Day!

I thought I would be closer to April 18, but that's close enough. My ovulation date was definitely correct. And we did get to see a little flutter of a heartbeat! The heartbeat was 117 bpm, which is normal this early. By next week, the heart rate will increase to around 160 or so.

So, while I was feeling smug about getting my dates correct, we were stupid enough to go to the lab and get my blood drawn. I wish I were a fainter, but alas, I throw up every time instead. The first lab tech stuck me multiple times and was unable to find my veins. Of course, this sent me diving for the garbage can. I don't know if the other tech just didn't know that I was pregnant or what, but she was panicking and asking me if I needed to be sent to the E.R. I'm not dying, I'm just pregnant!

So after sweating buckets and puking a few more times, I finally calmed down enough for a more experienced tech to finish drawing my blood while I stayed lying down. He had absolutely no problem finding my vein, of course. But the whole ordeal was so humiliating! They probably wonder why women like me have babies at all. The funny thing is, I've given birth before, and frankly, I'd rather go through childbirth than get my blood drawn. Giving birth is a piece of cake compared to that!

So now that I have bruises up and down my arms, I'd probably better announce that I'm pregnant to my church soon. I have a few more friends that I'd like to tell personally (or at least on the phone).

Does anyone else struggle with getting their blood drawn? How did your first trimester appointments go?

I sturggle with needles of any kind and blood draws in particular. No one can even touch the front side of my elbow where they draw blood or I start cringing. Which is weird because I started ivs all the time at my old job. Although it took 2 years to learn it because it freaked me out so bad (I had to practice first with feeling the tourniquette, then looking at the needle and poking an orange, and I finally progressed to sticking a co-worker. Another co-worker had to force my hand to do it because I couldn't physically make it happen. I cried. He didn't. LOL!I had to keep sticking him every few days until I didn't cry anymore. He is my hero. Then I could move on to patients.). Acting like it is no big deal and that I'm relaxed with patients helped me. I think my respect of what it's like to have that fear also helped me to be a better "sticker." I respect what they are going through, and we'll get through it together. I'll do my best because I know it matters. Every time.

What has helped me some is vaccines with my kids. I have to act like it's no big deal even though my heart is racing and I start feeling a little dizzy. And I'm proud because my daughter doesn't seem to care about needles - when she was 3 she even had some blood drawn and she just watched them like it was the coolest thing ever. Didn't even flinch. I don't want to instill in her the fear I have. Ya know?

And when I have blood drawn now, I warn the tech about my fear. I don't look. I ask her to warn me when it's coming. And I practice forced relaxation breathing. And I know when the needle goes in, to blow out and concentrate on breathing in through my nose and blowing out through my mouth. It's the only way I get through it.

I had no problem with it in my first pregnancy, but this time I seem to have some troubles.  Not so much the sight of blood or anything like that.  But they'll stick me, draw one vial of blood and then do the next one.  Well, the second vial won't fill!  So they wiggle it a little and see if the vacuum is working and everything and it still won't fill!  So, they have to stick me again.  Still doesn't work.  So they try the other arm...still won't work....so they stick me for a fourth time in my second arm and VOILA! it finally freaking works!!!  Aggravates me because then both of my arms are sore as hell and I have to use my arms!  I have a toddler that needs to be held and carried and groceries to be put away and cleaning to do...I can't have both arms be sore!!!  I'm a momma!!!  I can't be sore and tired!  I don't have time for it!  lol  :D

i had problems with it when i was prego too. that first big blood test they do where they take like 6 or 7 tubes, it killed me. i didn't throw up but my face went ghost white and i felt like i was going to throw up. you just can't take that much blood from a pregnant woman! when i was in the hospital getting ready to be induced the nurse came in to put the iv in my hand and i started panicking. she looked at me and said "you're about to give birth and you're more worried about this needle going in your hand?" i looked up at her and said "yes!" lol.

@beebizzle@xanga - Lol, my blood-takers always made fun of me like that, too.  The only one who didn't make me cry was a middle-aged woman named Ginger.  I had my eyes squeezed shut and fists clenched waiting for it to be over, and she was so good at it I didn't even know she was done until she said so.  Why can't more people be awesome like she was?

I have never really bruised before with blood draws but this pregnancy I seem to bruise every time I get my blood drawn.  I don't know what the deal is.  When I get pregnant I usually have multiple draws because I've had hormone issues in the past that caused me to lose a pregnancy.  So far there is only one lab tech in my doctor's office that doesn't bruise me and it also doesn't hurt when she does it either.  I don't have a fear of needles but I'm not a fan of being stuck either.

omg I feel the same way. I hate getting my blood drawn...I go into full-on panic attacks and just bawl until I'm so worked up they just can't even do anything. But delivery? I pushed that baby out, no problem; I could have pushed another one out right after. The day after delivery, when they did more blood work, I went back into panic attack mode. The one thing I always do to make sure I don't have any added trouble is ask for an EMT to draw my blood (they are really good at finding a vein quickly and getting it done ASAP). Once I explain to the lab techs how ungodly frustrating it is to take my blood, they gladly call up an EMT to deal with me. I still have panic attacks, but at least they always get it the first time, so I don't have to be poked more than once. :)

I hate needles...  That was the worst part of having to go to the doctor while pregnant   By my third child, it was a little more bearable though I still close my eyes and flinch.

  • SeeBeeWrite@xanga

I had to deal with many, many, many needles for my IVF cycles, so I don't have a problem with them. It does piss me off when people can't find a vein. I have the palest skin, and I can clearly see plenty of good veins, so why do some people have so much trouble finding them? When I had my wisdom teeth taken out last year, it took five tries before they got the IV in. The whole inside of my arm was bruised. I don't mind needles, if the person with the needle knows how to use it.

I hate getting my blood drawn, but by pregnancy #3, I was pretty good at just letting them do their thing, with no fuss from me! Actually, the IV during labor & delivery, to me, is worse than anything! I completely freak out about it every time.

  • DraigStudio@xanga

Wanhhhhhh! I can give birth but  cannot give blood. Seriously. Id rather give blood than try to pass that throw my urethra which would be the guy equivalent.Giving blood is easy

  • BarniganFlarn@xanga

I'm the same way! Getting blood drawn sucks. I have really hard to find veins and I've always hated needles. When I got my blood draw when pregnant I almost fainted. I was sitting straight up in a chair and suddenly started breathing really fast and sweating a lot and said I had to lie down NOW. The nurse was a sub at that hospital or something so she was just learning her way around so she had no idea where to put me. She called for help and another nurse came in and flipped down this chair that conveniently reclined and gave her a look like she was an idiot-she'd sat me in the wrong chair-the one that's for family and friends of the patient, not the patient. They told me next time I have blood taken I'm supposed to ask for a smaller needle and to lie down right away.

.....aaand i'd rather get my blood drawn.

  • Dreamware@xanga

I don't mind getting my blood drawn.  I think if you don't look and don't move your arm, it's not so bad.

  • nwilliamson@xanga

I HATE blood draws too.  I've given birth twice, both natural.  The idea of an epidural or IV just grossed me out.  I too would give birth before a blood draw any day.  And I don't like the inside of my elbow touched either.

  • cupcakemurder@xanga

I LOVE getting my blood drawn - I think it's so cool! :)

  • Brilliant_Innocence@xanga

I didn't mind it that much. I've never been a huge fan of needles. I always get a little anxious. I'd much rather get my blood drawn than go through child birth.  I had, for a few months, gone to donate plasma.  They have to use a bigger needle, so you have to have good veins. I thought that would make me sick, but I wanted the extra money.  I only almost passed out once, and that was because I didn't have enough food in my stomach. The rest of the time, I did okay.  It kind of helped me get a little less anxious for needles.

  • explosive@xanga

I've never been pregnant and I don't want to find out which one I'd dislike less. I already hate getting blood drawn. I stop breathing involuntarily until they're done. When I attempted suicide, I had an IV in my HAND, which is full of BONES, and a tube in my elbow, just in case I needed "sedation." By the end of the day, that tube was filled with blood from my trying to take it out myself, and it was dislodged but still in my arm. It felt disgusting. It still makes me queasy and gives me the chills just thinking about it. A tattoo is NOTHING like getting blood drawn. I could easily get dozens more of those.

  • MrsEOD_2004@xanga

Ohhh I feel your pain! I don't throw up, but I can go into a mini-panic attack and/or cry. For the longest time my husband would have to go back with me to keep me calm, but in the last year or so I've gotten semi-decent at it. Now when it comes to an IV it's a little different - those things still freak me out.

  • ChasingPirates@xanga

Nope, but I'm actually thinking about donating blood.

  • letschasejordache@xanga

i don't weigh enough to donate blood, thankfully. the last time i had to have blood drawn (not my choice, mind you!) i passed out and got a free orange juice.

  • mevlink@xanga

@Dreamware@xanga - Oh, I've definitely tried that. I don't look, I ask the person doing it to tell me before s/he starts and clearly announce when s/he's finished, because I do not want to see the needle or the blood. During this very episode that I wrote about, I didn't see anything, but it doesn't matter. Just being pricked, even when I see nothing, is enough to send me diving for the garbage can. I've ALWAYS been that way. I've never NOT thrown up when getting blood drawn, except for when I was in the hospital after I gave birth. They had to stick me a million times because I was dehydrated from labor. I started sobbing uncontrollably (between the hormones and not sleeping for 36+ hours, you would too), and they had to get a different nurse to do it. She was so fast that I didn't even realize she was done. I need someone like that every time.

  • Dreamware@xanga

@mevlink@xanga - Eek >.< I really can't relate, I've never had a problem getting my blood drawn.  And the nurses usually get it right on the first try everytime I've donated blood
