  • Actually, I Just LOVE Vomiting!

    Warning: Morning Sickness!

Some women are lucky; they don’t get morning sickness. There are some that have a little less luck; they get some morning sickness. Then there are the rest of us, the women with weeks of nonstop vomiting.

All that nonstop vomiting has a name: Hyperemesis. I have a feeling that hyperemesis is Latin for “Poor woman that vomits everything in sight.” Since hyperemesis isn’t that well known, most people tend to ask questions such as “have you tried crackers?” or “I hear that ginger works.

For many women, the only thing that works is having an 7-pound baby shoot out of her crotch.

I know that people are trying to be helpful, but it is really hard not to go postal on someone offering “advice,” especially if you spent the night before in the emergency room, getting IV fluids for dehydration. I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to say “Crackers? Really? That’s all it takes? Eating a few stinking crackers?

I’ve been vomiting for 1 week and a half straight and all I needed to do was eat a freaking cracker?”

Did any other mamas experience hyperemesis?

LOL this was a humorous post.  Sorry you have to deal with that though.  But at least you have a good sense of humor about it.  :)

I had all day sickness from the time I got pregnant all the way through delivery and for 6 weeks afterwards.  I took people's advice on what to eat and drink or do with a grain of salt.  Because if I would have eaten a cracker every time someone said that would help my vomiting, I would have turned into a cracker.

  • Brilliant_Innocence@xanga

Yep. The first 3 months were by far the worst, but I puked every day of my pregnancy.  Those first three months I was zapped of energy so bad I didn't even want to take a shower.  Most of the people I knew had somehow witnessed how sick I was, so I didn't get any stupid advice. That was the good thing, lol.  I ate saltine crackers all the time, in hopes that it would EVENTUALLY prevent it from happening. It didn't.

OMG I could've written this!  I have had 3 hypermesis pregnancies out of 7 (one miscarriage).. I KNOW the difference between "normal" morning sickness and hypermesis... so when I would talk about how miserable I am and people are offering advice of ginger ale and crackers, it's like seriously- if that worked, I'd be all over it!  I also ended up in the ER from severe dehydration, it was ridiculous.

I'm 16 weeks now and feeling better, thank goodness I am not one of those women who are sick the whole 40 weeks.. I couldn't handle that.

I had it with every single pregnancy. I vomited 24 hours a day at least three times an hour. Nothing helped, they even tried putting me in a medically induced coma thinking it might be a mental thing but when I woke up they told me that I had continued to vomit even while in the coma. The vomiting started for me the day the implantation took place and continued until the moment the baby was born. I spent 9 months with vomit bucket in tow and IV bag attached every single time. For my last pregnancy they were experimenting with Zofran and my doctor said why don't we try it so I did and it helped stop the vomiting but it didn't keep me from feeling sick and at the time it was $100 a pop and my insurance wouldn't cover it because it wasn't approved for use in morning sickness yet. Due to the cost I could only afford to take it once a month or so. I hear that it's been approved now ladies so hopefully those of you who are still having babies can get some if you are vomiting too much.

I had hyperemesis my first two pregnancies all 9 months and 6 months with the third.  My first pregnancy was MISERABLE.  I ended up in the hospital once for dehydration around 19 weeks and ended up with a low-birthweight baby because I vomited so much.  I finally discovered Zofran and that has been my lifesaver.  I take it at least once every 24 hours during my pregnancies and it stops the vomiting. I still feel the nausea, but it's manageable.  My nausea ended the moment I gave birth with the first two and took about a week after birth to go away with the third.  Other than Zofran, the only thing that worked occasionally to keep the vomiting at bay was protein.  I nibbled on salami nonstop during my first pregnancy.

I have never been pregnant, probably won't be anytime soon.  But I still thought this post was REALLY well written and thought the cartoon was hilarious.

  • aliyagator@xanga

Awesome!  just crackers!  I can do THAT.  haha.

I had Hyperemesis with my first pregnancy and now i'm "enjoying" it again with #2.  I actually almost didn't read this post because the word Vomiting was in the title.  And I know that even just hearing the word can induce a bout of vomiting in me.  After ending up in the hospital once around 16 weeks last time I discovered the wonders of Zofran.  I'm SO LUCKY that it works for me.  For lots of women out there NOTHING works.  I know I'm blessed that there IS a drug that works for me.  I take it 2-3 times/day and still vomit 1-4 times/day.  But I classify that as manageable.  (I really should have headed to the hospital a few weeks ago too... but managed to keep some zofran down long enough - barely - to stop vomiting after about 30 hours of non-stop).

I had a coworker who often would tell me she was terribly sick while pregnant and that she felt totally better if she just drank this very specific lemonade drink that I should try.  I only thought, "then you weren't THIS sick!"

  • TakingxOverxMe@xanga

Hyperemesis sounds horrible!  Sorry you have to go through that.  x__x

  • Riftsong@xanga

Yup, I've had 2 hyperemesis pregnancies and I must say that the extreme weakness from not being able to eat for weeks on end was about the only thing that kept me from strangling every idiot who said the words "saltines and ginger ale" to me.

My least favorite comment though was the women who said "Yeah, I was really sick like that, but I didn't tell anyone".  Then they'd look at me like I was a drama queen.  I had an IV every day for 2 months because not a drop of water would stay in my stomach for 2 months.  ::sigh::

If you're not already on it, get your doctor/midwife to prescribe you some zofran.  I started it early in my second pregnancy and I only had to go to the hospital once.

My big pieces of advice to are that when you feel like you're about to puke, drink a glass of water.  It dilutes the acid so your throat won't get so raw.  And rinse your mouth really well after every time.  Your teeth will get damaged if you don't.

  • PervyPenguin@xanga

My mom never puked, neither did my grandma. They got nauseous, but that was the extent of it.

"the only thing that works is having an 7-pound baby shoot out of her crotch." Rofl!!

  • Charsmama@xanga

I am very glad I didn't get a lick of morning sickness, but I had a couple friends who were like you. Vomiting ALL the time.  IV fluids, Zofran ect.  Hope it lets up soon for you.  It would be miserable.

  • the_peach_assailant@xanga

That's awful. I had morning sickness (and a miscarriage), but nothing like that.

  • kaylaya@xanga

Wow. And they say pregnancy is a wonderful time! Hah. O_O

  • explosive@xanga

I've never been pregnant, but when I get nauseated, I'd much rather just puke than feel sick to my stomach indefinitely.

  • fortheloveofwasabi@xanga

I had morning sickness, but luckily not that bad. I've been so sick before that I have pretty much puked everything up and felt no hunger or thirst whatsoever. Although someone please tell me why they call it morning sickness and not all day sickness. I couldn't find much of anything that helped me.

  • raspberryjade@xanga

that would bother me, too. I really hope that passes soon for you.

....but have you tried crackers? ;)

  • Bunny_On_The_Fritz@xanga

This will be added to my extensive list of reasons why I never, ever want to have a child...

  • nimbusthedragon@xanga

    @Bunny_On_The_Fritz@xanga - Seconded.

Seriously.  No amount of money/persuasion will ever make me have a child, though I admit the women out there with the balls to do so.

  • Topaz85@xanga

I was nauseated constantly for three months, but never really threw up much. If I had, I would have been livid at stupid suggestions like that. Like you would not have ever thought to try a damn cracker. Do people think at ALL before they speak?

  • Texana@xanga

Bless your heart. Struggling with nausea is the worst, and i truly hope you feel better soon. I suffer from chronic vertigo, so i can relate. It's a friggin nightmare. A friend of mine had morning sickness bad like you and i did a lot of research and read about taking a spoonful on honey every 2 hours gives lots of women relief. It gave my friend relief so much so, she told me I was her friend for life, for telling her about this. (She changed it over to a gatorade type of drink). It has to do with glucose levels in the blood, all very scientific. Anyway, take care- you are in my prayers.

  • Madretobe@xanga

Thank You so much for the advice and comments.

I did try the crackers and it worked for a bit but then i was back at it.

Sub and Comment. Keep looking foward to my post about my pregnancy.

  • sojealoussrvs@xanga

i've been struggling with constant nausea and too-often vomiting for almost a year. and i'm NOT pregnant. boy, i just can't wait till i want to have kids. :/

  • the_rocking_of_socks@xanga

I was sick from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed, and quite often in between, for seven months.  The only food I could keep down for more than 30 minutes was fried chicken legs from KFC and apple juice.
