Dear Parents,
I am tired of trying to sound peppy in my e-mails to you. When I say, "It is
fun to see the kids involved in hands on learning!!!!" what I really mean is, "Please, for the love of God will someone,
anyone, step forward and show up for the damn science lab?!?"
There are only so many ways I can sugarcoat cafeteria duty. Just come in and do it. Because helping your kid open his ketchup packet is no more my responsibility than yours.
If I ask you to send in ridiculous food items, like dry pasta wheels or green marshmallows, it's not because I think it's fun to send parents on grocery store scavenger hunts. The teachers hatch these cutesy ideas, knowing that it is not
their responsibility to beg for novelty food items from parents. Nope, that would be
my "job."
The ridiculous e-mails from the PTA about everything from photos for the yearbook to volunteer recruitment for flu shot day are NOT FROM ME. I forward them because they tell me to do so. If you delete them and don't volunteer, no skin off my back. I'd rather have you stuff the classroom folders every week, or read to the class once a month, because that would actually help me have to beg you less. And that would really be win-win. Would it not?
And parents, please beware. If you think I'm annoying now, just you wait. Busy season is coming! Extra classroom readers during teacher planning time, snacks to "reward" the kids for testing, and then the last few weeks of school.... also known as "Party Time!"

my mom was our room parent. her and 2 other parents rotated. I guess the parents nowadays are not as helpful as they used to be :(
I don't even know what a room parent is. >_<
I just homeschool my kids so I guess I'm a room parent, a teacher and a mom all at once! Anyway, if my kids were in school, I know I'd be volenteering a lot because I'd want to be involved in what they were doing.
I have worked at daycare for 6 years and I agree with what you have to say. Every time there is a party or some kind of special event, parents cannot be bothered to bring in something simple, much less show up to help celebrate and make things run smoothly. I realize not everyone is a stay at home mom, this is surely not the case of parents of daycare students, but come on, you can at least bring chips and dip to my party. My mom worked full time but she still managed to come to all my school parties and field trips and actually helped out, not sat around needing to be waited on by the teacher. Come on parents, step it up.

I could see both sides to this and it could be as frustrating to the absent parents as it is to the over-worked room parents, and this holds especially true for the comment posts about daycare. Adults and young professionals really are working more now just to cover home bases in terms of expenses and necessities. If the volunteer is able to put her/his time in, extra kudos to them! For working parents though, it is for the most part quite difficult to ask for time off during a workday to go to your child's school party or science lab.
That's the point of daycare in the first place. These parents DON'T have the time to stay home and be as involved in their lives as they probably wish they could. And why do classrooms need room parents anyway? What's the average class size these days? Maybe we had a lot less with an average of 30 per class so the teacher was able to wrangle our entire class without help back in the day.
Kudos to you though. Thank you for making a difference in these kids' lives. They WILL look back on it and remember what they have to be thankful for.

I have been a room parent several times. It can be frustrating. What helped me was asking for all the volunteers in September - even the year end party. In September I found parents more focused and helpful but if you ask in May forget it. Everyone is tried of volunteering and panicked about the kids being home full-time in a month. I setup a volunteer calendar on www.volunteerspot.com in September for the whole year.

I can see how there would be some parents who work so much they couldn't even come in if they wanted too. I think it's sad, though, because their children don't get to see them as much as they should. However, I commend them for doing what needs to be done to pay the bills and put food on the table.
My mother was a SAHM and she never volunteered for anything, never showed up on the days we were having parties or field trips or lab days, and she didn't bother to send me in with the snacks or food requested. She wasn't as involved as she should have been. - I, on the other hand, will be lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom until my children are all ending elementary school. I plan on volunteering all the time and staying as involved with the school as possible. That's what I always wished my mother would do at my school, so I'll do it for my children, and their classmates.
