I don't have the best relationship with my grandparents. My relationship with Grandpa is okay, but I'm very shaky with Grandma.
A couple months before I turned 21, Grandma asked what I wanted for my birthday. I told her what I wanted. Then she said she was going to get me something completely different. It didn't matter what I wanted; she was going to get me what she thought I should have. What she wanted me to have included bath stuff and lotion. Anyone who knows me personally knows I've had allergic reactions to certain lotions from Bath and Body Works, so I have to be careful with what kind of products I use from that store.
Then a few days before she came for her most recent visit, I was asked to dust, vacuum, and get the spiderwebs down from the walls in our extra bedroom. I did what I needed to do in the extra bedroom, and guess what happened on the Saturday that Grandma was around? First thing in the morning she started having a fit because of what she believed was a spiderweb behind the door, it turned out to be a bit of frayed carpet. If anything is out of place, or just a bit messy, when she comes to visit, she has a fit.
Also first thing on Saturday morning she decided that I apparently do nothing in terms of cleaning or cooking, and just sit around all day, as she quite angrily asked, "What do you do?" in response to me saying that I don't clean the cat's litter boxes. (Litter boxes are Dad's job.) I was not happy, at all.
I was about to start calling a few friends and asking to stay with them for a few nights at that point.
Is my grandma being reasonable? Or does it sound like I should see about staying with friends when she comes for a visit?

She sounds like an old lady to me.
It doesn't sound like controlling. Just sounds like an old lady.
Typical annoying grandma.....
My mother has tried to be controlling with my kids but I set her ass straight real fast!
be lucky you have a grandma and stop complaining.
my grandmother calls me fat and tells me that i am the reason my mom is dead... so i think you have it lucky... from my standpoint. lol but she does sound like a crotchety old lady
@Tiger11007@xanga - What's annoying is that Mom makes up excuses for my grandma as if the behavior is okay when it's not
@hippiechristian73102@xanga - That is just plain wrong! Grandmothers have a place in the family and it's not to interfere with their child's parenting.
@Tiger11007@xanga -
Mom makes up excuses for everyone's behavior, except mine. If I do or say something stupid, it's like all hell breaks loose. And my parents wonder why I would rather be with my friends...
I'd stop and think, "If I don't have this time with grandma before she dies, would I be upset that I missed out?" If the answer is no? Then I'd be high tailin' it out of there! My own grandmother seems to be slipping into senility and can be nasty. I chose not go over to her house anymore because I do not want to remember her this way and the way that she treats me is hurtful, whether she "means to" or not.
@hippiechristian73102@xanga - In a situation like that, the best thing is to have a good talk with them and let them know how you feel. They are not allowing you to be yourself.
How old are you? (I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just curious)
This is how most old ladies are. Yes, it's rude....but we really can't do anything about it. They're old, they're not going to change now. As for the presents, I would just gladly accept them, and give it to someone else if you're allergic to them.
@storyofmylife87@xanga - I'm 23 now
Sounds like my mom.
Hahahah. Yeah, grandparents can seem crazy sometimes. I can see why you don't want to be around her. I didn't get along with my grandmother either. She was like that. Very critical. I'm sure we'll be crazy old people some day, too, though. Plus I wish I had tried harder to have a better relationship with her now that she's not around.
I know grandparents are difficult but nobody should have the ability to push you out of your own home. If you have reminded her that you are allergic to those products, then I would politely remind her again and if she continues, then give them to someone else. Even if that's how she's always been, there is no excuse for that kind of rudeness.
