  • Is Grandma Trying to be Too Controlling?

I don't have the best relationship with my grandparents. My relationship with Grandpa is okay, but I'm very shaky with Grandma.

A couple months before I turned 21, Grandma asked what I wanted for my birthday. I told her what I wanted. Then she said she was going to get me something completely different. It didn't matter what I wanted; she was going to get me what she thought I should have. What she wanted me to have included bath stuff and lotion. Anyone who knows me personally knows I've had allergic reactions to certain lotions from Bath and Body Works, so I have to be careful with what kind of products I use from that store.

Then a few days before she came for her most recent visit, I was asked to dust, vacuum, and get the spiderwebs down from the walls in our extra bedroom. I did what I needed to do in the extra bedroom, and guess what happened on the Saturday that Grandma was around? First thing in the morning she started having a fit because of what she believed was a spiderweb behind the door, it turned out to be a bit of frayed carpet. If anything is out of place, or just a bit messy, when she comes to visit, she has a fit.

Also first thing on Saturday morning she decided that I apparently do nothing in terms of cleaning or cooking, and just sit around all day, as she quite angrily asked, "What do you do?" in response to me saying that I don't clean the cat's litter boxes. (Litter boxes are Dad's job.) I was not happy, at all.

I was about to start calling a few friends and asking to stay with them for a few nights at that point.

Is my grandma being reasonable? Or does it sound like I should see about staying with friends when she comes for a visit?
