  • Should I Allow My Teenage Daughter to Get Hair Extensions?

Yesterday my sixteen year old daughter L asked my permission to get hair extensions -as in, sew-in, semi-permanent hair extensions. I'm sort of torn on whether or not I should allow this.

On one hand, my daughter is going through her formative years, and I understand if she wants to experiment with her appearance a little (as long as she's not experimenting with other things). She's old enough to understand the consequences of what she'd be doing, and old enough to make her own decisions.

On the other hand, I know a few things about hair extensions.
I know that they're extremely expensive, not necessarily something I want to pay for. I know that they can lead to permanent bald spots, infection or irritation of the scalp, and damage to hair follicles, just to name a few. As much as I love L, I'm worried that she's not going to take care of her hair as well as she should.

What's your opinion on this? Should teenagers be allowed to get permanent hair extensions?

hair extenstions or tracks as i call em arent permanent at all. i think you should let her get them. hair does give a sense of security and it wouldnt hurt to boost her confidence at this age. just make sure you bring her some where thats going to give her a flattering cut and style unless you know how to sew them in yourself.

since when did clip ons become cheap at 90 bucks?? thats fucking expensive for like a 3rd of your hair done..get the fuck outta here..get you a bag of human hair for 20-40 bucks..maybe i'm just broke and have to make due but clip ons that can easily be pulled out is not going in my head..you guys are crazy or just really loose with money

  • omfg_its_____LIZx3@xanga

yeah i think almost everyone here has the same opinion. let her understand them first. then get clip ons to see if she really likes them or not. start small.

  • jing116@xanga

y dont you just get her those clip on ones?

  • jing116@xanga

note: if you go to a chinese mall, you can probably get a clip on one for $20~$25

it's not of the highest quality (obviously); but if you're getting it just for fun, it's pretty good - especially since you don't know if L will actually like it.

AS A BLACK FEMALE, I WOULD SAY THAT WEAVE IS VERY COMMON IN OUR SOCIETY AMONG BOTH THE YOUNG TO THE VERY OLD, AND THEY CAN BE EXPENSIVE, BUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU GO TO SOMEONE WHO IS CHEAP, LIKE A FAMILY FRIEND OR SOMETHING. BUT I AM ASSUMING THAT YOU ARE WHITE, AND MORE THAN LIKELY, YOU DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO DOES SOW-INS, OR WHATNOT, SO YOU WILL HAVE TO GO TO AN ACTUAL SALON, WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE- UP TO $3,000 OR MORE USUALLY. AND IF YOU DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY, THAN DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. ALSO, BLACK PEOPLE HAVE A MUCH COURSER TEXTURE HAIR THAN WHITES, SO IT IS VERY NECESSARY TO USE WEAVE (OR PERM) AT TIMES UNLESS WE WOULD LOOK TRASHY. BUT SINCE WHITES NORMALLY HAVE FINER HAIR, WEAVE IS NOT USUSALLY AN OPTION, ESPECIALLY AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE. SAYING THIS, I SUGGEST THAT YOU DO NOT GIVE YOUR CHILD HAIR EXTENSIONS BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO EXPENSIVE (IF YOU WANT THEM DONE NICELY AND PROFESSIONAL), AND SHE CAN STYLE HER ORIGINAL HAIR IN WAYS THAT MINORITY GROUPS, LIKE BLACKS, CAN'T DO WITH THEIR HAIR, SO SHE SHOULD BE GRATEFUL.

Well, most girls modify their appearance for a reason.  I say let her do whatever you can afford so that she has a decent social life and edge in this world and cares about herself.

It's better than that bland fake blonde [blond] that everyone attacks.

But be careful.  I just had to cut a bunch of my hair out because I dyed it blonde (not that I can afford the upkeep).  It was more or less just something to do because I could.  I don't care how I look because it doesn't matter anymore.  In fact, my life is worse when I am pretty so...

I'm in hairdressing school and I paid $50 to buy my extensions and I got them sewn in at school by my friend. Is there possibly someone who could sew them in for cheaper or a hairdressing school around you that does extensions? As for bald spots and stuff it's all about how you take care of them, but it is A LOT of work. When I had my extensions in it took me 2 hours to blow dry my hair after washing it because if you don't blow dry them properly it can cause your hair to rot (ew). I'd tell her about all the work that goes into taking proper care of extensions and remind her that they can be uncomfortable if you're not used to them. I'd suggest to her to get the clip in ones for now so she can experiment with changing up her look everyday and maybe get the sew in ones at a later time. To be completely honest I've only put the extensions in once and they were so much work that I probably wouldn't put them back in, it's so time consuming and they get tangled really easily and if you don't take proper care of them it will ruin your hair and the fake hair will start to look fake and noticeable. I don't think 16 is too young for extensions though, we had a young girl (maybe around 10) come into the school today and get purple streaks in her hair (paid for by her mother) and for sure bleach is way  more damaging to the hair than extensions.

well first ask her if she knows all the risks and if she's took them into consideration. dont just go out and say what you know of what could happen in detail, just in general to see if maby shes already looked into the subject. im asuming that she should reply with the knoledge shes already learned and if she doesnt you can tell her the possible risks.

im 14 and all my parents will let me do is wear make-up, paint my nails and dye my hair. i like you cuz your mind seems open to learn more about this, unlike my parents that bias things and make things a flat out no unless a "friend" of mine whos parents have had a background check can have whatever it is (like dying hair) for an amount of time. ether that or i give them a letter full of info about the subject on christmas or my birthday cuz they wont hear me out if i started talking to them about it.

When i was 16 i got some glued on extensions, semi-permanent highlights in my hair that is actually less damaging and cheaper than actually dying my hair. they lasted for a couple of months. Unless you are trying to lengthen your hair, it's pretty cheap and harmless.

  • Marahhair

We offer affordable clip in hair extensions, made of real remy hair, which are not damaging to the hair.  They can wash them, colour them, straighten and curl them.  Our  extensions are $75.00 for 15" and $85.00 for 20" plus taxes if applicable and shipping.  Check them out at www.marahhair.com.
We ship to Canada and the United States.

@TornadoChaser - What she said! Also, I would be glad that she's asking for hair extensions and not tattoos or piercings. Those are pretty much permanent while hair is changeable/fixable.

  • raspbxrrryjam@xanga

If she is willing to get a job to pay for them... why not?

Otherwiseup... buy her a set (or two depending on how thick her hair is on it's own) of clip ins and let her have at.

  • onlyFORaLILwhile@xanga

    hell no

    unless she is balding

next you know she'll want fake boobs.

  • just2ICKY@xanga

if you do decide to let her, definitely do the clip-ins. you're right about the possible damage permanent ones can do to her scalp/hair and they're not as "permanent" as one would like them to be. clip-ins are easy to wear, take out and care for. =)

@dream_lucidx3@xanga - My natural hair used to be long and healthy but I totally destroyed it with extensions. Extensions are the worst enemy of hair matters not if they are glued or weaved (sown in) even if it is human hair as they contain certain chemicals that break your hair. My hair used to be shoulder length but since I had extensions they are shorter than most guys so now I have to wear wigs till they grow out or I wear clip ins, as for extensions - NEVER AGAIN
