I've been looking forward to warmer weather because we have the beach, a pool, and water parks to look forward to. I haven't found swim suits yet for myself or for the girls. I have never heard of a rash guard swim suit.
However, according to Wikipedia.com, a rash guard swim suit is used mainly by surfers to prevent chafing, when exposed to wet weather for extended periods of time when it's too warm for a wet suit, provides additional coverage from the sun, and protects from harsh waters and waves.
This is something I'm looking into for the girls because Caroline gets a rash every time she is exposed to something new, and Isabel burned last summer on her shoulders, and I felt bad for her because I remember burning on my shoulders as a child and teenager, and it hurts!
The only problem? The suits aren't as cute.

I want to get the girls two pieces because of the convenience of diaper changes with a two piece. I will probably get a halter tankini for the coverage after having two children, but still having the convenience of just pulling down bottoms versus a one piece when having to go potty. However, I cannot find a halter tankini that catches my eye, yet.
I can't wait for warmer weather!

i originally bought evelynn a rashguard suit from gymboree but the top fit her perfect and the bottoms we needed 3 sizes smaller! they were huge I wasn't going to buy 2 suits so both pieces fit. Thats the same problem I had with every 2 piece we tried so we went with a super cute onepiece w/ a matching hat for more coverage from gymboree
I'd totally buy them for my kids. We don't surf, but I think they're awesome for sun protection. They make them for little boys, too! :)
As of now, my three year old as a one piece and my one year old (a boy) has some trunks. But, we're currently in the middle of winter so we do indoor swimming.
I wear a rash guard sometimes. I wear it over my bikini top. Old Navy probably isn't the best place to get a good one. I haven't seen one of theirs but I imagine it would probably fall apart quickly. I have two great Billabong ones that I really, really like and another one that I got from a sports store. I would recommend shopping around online and paying particular attention to surf brands - they're the most likely to have functional rash guards that are cute, even for kids.
Also, like I said, I wear mine over my bikini top. You don't have to get a "rash guard suit" - you can just get a rash guard to wear over a bikini.

We get our swim suits from Lands End mostly. I either get one piece suits or rash guard suits for all of my kids. Rash guard top for sure for my fair, blonde haired, blue eyed son and rash guard for sure for my oldest daughter for the sake of modesty. For the little girls I don't care if they are still in one piece suits until they are around 8. I just refuse to let them wear some of the tiny, skanky stuff that passes for toddler/little girl swim wear.
