The Joys Of Grocery Shoppping
I just got home from grocery shopping, and let me tell you:
I….AM….POOPED!
When did this become so exhausting?
I’ll tell you when…..WHEN WE MOVED TO NEW YORK CITY!
Everything about grocery shopping was fun to me before we lived here. Call me odd, but I love to shop – even if it’s for food. I love the cabinets and refrigerator after they are all stocked up and when I have more than 2 options on what to make for dinner. I love jumping up from my throne when I’m craving some chocolate – and actually HAVING it…
But ever since I’ve lived here, grocery shopping has become torture. Let me walk you guys through my routine of grocery shopping.
First, I have to break the news to my youngest, Little Miss Sugar, who to my surprise- loathes shopping. With myself, and my oldest who would rather shop then breathe- it was a bit disturbing to hear such news. Daddy, on the other hand is pretty pumped about having one of us on his side.
After much hassle and a bribe or two – we head out the door and climb into the car. This is my “Pep Talk” with Little Miss Sugar. The talk that reminds her that she’d better behave if she knows what’s good for her. After she agrees, and I apply my lipgloss – (You never know when you’ll run into someone you know) we go into the store and fight over where she sits. In the front of the cart, or the back. Most times I give in, and she sits in the back, crushing my bag of Lay’s that I will later devour in one day.
The time comes when the cart is full, and everything on the list is checked off. By this time my arms hurt from pushing the cart, and my mind hurts from watching Little Miss Spice walk away from me 20 different times. “Well I guess it wasn't that bad”, I think to myself.
Then I turn the corner only to see that there is no parking in front of my apartment. “Breathe… “ I tell myself. I double park, walk Little Miss Sugar inside, give her a juice and some marshmallows and carry the groceries inside – two at a time since I have PAPER BAGS!!!!
After all 11 bags are inside, and my legs hate me, I get Little Miss Spice, go to the car and find parking. I walk a block and a half home, I fall to the sofa and try to forget the best part :
Putting them all away.
Do you have a hard time grocery shopping where you live?

You will be jealous. I live in the land of multiple grocery store options, lots of parking spaces, and parking in my driveway right beside the kitchen door (that enters into the kitchen). But, I do have a hard time. I like to take my time and look at it all, but I have a new baby that doesn't let me have as much time as I would like. Then, my husband also comes (he is the primary cooker), but he is always rushing me to get-in-and-get-out. I always get home feeling exhausted, realize I didn't get everything on my list, and that I forgot to use the coupons that made whatever a great deal. I would love to go alone, but the baby does not like riding in shopping carts and I just can't do it all by myself.
yes i do i have to walk 2 flights of stair. i use plastic and carry as much in at one time usually my arms wanna fall off but i want as least trips as possible
i..loathe..grocery shopping :(
I think i would actually like grocery shopping in NYC because you can get your daily dose of walking by walking to the grocery store. Do you have a store you could walk to? I know you could only handle a couple bags, but it would force you to go all the time, thus getting lots of exercise. It would eliminate the issue of losing a parking spot. Since you have a little one, push a stroller and hang bags off it. I think it would be a lot more enjoyable than driving and i wish i had that option!
I love grocery shopping! My husband and I do it together, but I always have a hard time finding what I want, or I do find it and it is way too expensive (a common occurrence in this part of the country).
I talk the hubs into watching the children, grab my fabric bags, walk out to the car in the garage, drive to one of three stores within a 5 mile radius, get the groceries, come back, pull into the driveway and walk right into the kitchen with my beloved fabric store bags.
Yeah. That has happened about twice in the last year... LOL Usually, the hubby wants to come with or "it's on our way home" with the whole family along for the ride. And the fabric bags have been forgotten or not returned to the car as they should be so many freakin' times I can no longer count. The boys get in the store and want to drive the cart...right into my shins. And then the "Can we get...?" game starts...and if you say, "Yes." to one you have to say, "Yes." to both and then they start asking for more and more because, "Hey! You already said yes once! Maybe you'll do it again and again!" It starts out fine enough for the baby; she's happy to get her cookie from the bakery. The first three bites always lull me into thinking, "Oh, good...this'll be an easy trip with her..."...right up until she decides that mommy needs to eat some cookie, too! And starts forcing it on me.
Then, when the cookie is gone...having been mostly force fed to me and dropped on the floor while I shoot apologetic looks to all employees I pass, Megan wants to hold everything...for 5 seconds, before getting tired of it and throwing it on the floor, often popping open the bag or plastic container in the process. About this time, one of the boys has to use the bathroom and, instead of going together, the other will wait 30 seconds and then decide he has to go, too. Then they'll come sprinting through the store like wild boars 5 minutes later with hands dripping wet and I'll get to pass out apologetic looks to other shoppers and employees, while informing the kids that they don't run in the store and that they need to dry their hands after they wash them...though why I bother, I do not know because it just bounces off of them...seriously, not even bothering to go in one ear and out the other. Then there's the check out process and kids that want to "help", but whom refuse to pay any attention to grouping like items together. Few things make me so twitchy. By the time we're walking back out to the car, I'm praying for a jet to fall from the sky and put me out of my misery. And that's BEFORE we make it home and the kids "help" unload and the bag with the butter in it winds up in the bathroom... Oh, hell...I need a martini just thinking about it!!
I love grocery shopping just like you and having lots of choices in my kitchen to choose from :) I think the worst was when I lived in a dorm and had to go grocery shopping b/c it felt like I had to walk a mile from the parking lot to my dorm room with groceries. Now usually, it's just a matter of walking a few steps and going up a flight of stairs, hopefully it stays that way.
I just went grocery shopping with my dad today. I usually don't go with him, but did today. The hardest part is usually unloading and putting everything away.
@filtered_sunlight - OMG how funny! I'm sorry to laugh at your "misery" but I thought I had it bad when my toddler starts wailing in the middle of the store about... whatever. At least you see the humor in it all. :)
@justcallmekelli@xanga - If I couldn't laugh at it, I swear I'd just spend my days crying into martinis! Megan is 15 months and will start wailing in the middle of the store when you refuse to let her hold things (even knowing full well that it's going land on the floor in a few seconds). I feel your pain and I raise you a 7 and 9 year old. LOLOL
The best part of grocery shopping for me is the prequel- the laying out of coupons, ads and circulars. I LOVE savings, and saving money on food is great! Before I set a budget for myself, grocery shopping was more fun, but now, it's great to have a list, and go conquer my rounds of stores.
I LOVE grocery shopping (I feel much less guilty dropping $150 on food than on dresses and shoes...) but...my husband hates it. If I shop by myself he refuses to eat what I buy, and when he shops by himself--after at least a week of prompting--I'll starve. So, it's a group effort, me prancing in happiness down the aisles, and him grumbling and looking for the best price on beer to deal with my shopping elation. :P
Where in NYC are you? Is Fresh Direct available? I pretty much always get my groceries delivered. It's usually about a $5 fee.. sometimes more depending on store and distance, but it's worth it since we don't have a car and have a toddler.
I used to go grocery shopping with my husband, as we would pick a time and go together after we got paid. Now, he is the only one working, and we have roommates who always need to go shopping, too. My grocery trips have turned into something I do mainly solo. People ride with me up there, we split, and I go about my business. At the end, we all meet back at the front of the store, head to the car, and go home. When we get home, everyone takes their dry items and puts them away. Then, it's my turn...
I get to sit in the kitchen and put away all the stuff for me and my hubby, along with all the fridge and freezer items for anyone who went with me because, otherwise, nothing will fit right, and the whole thing will be a complete mess. Of course, I know I will also get to REorganize everything at least two-three times before the next trip...
The only thing that saves this from being a complete pain is the fact that, although he does not come any more because of space, if my husband is home when I am doing this, he comes out and helps to get everything inside, and will help me put things away if I ask him to do so.
I just found out I'm pregnant, though, with baby number 1... so what's going to happen when I get far enough in to not want to have to do all this on my own... well, I guess we'll see. :P
@filtered_sunlight - Quit hogging the martini. I raise you a three year old, five year old, a ten year old, two twelve year olds, and two fifteen year olds. I win!! LOLOL
@gwacemom - Yes...but the two 15 year olds puts you in a better position...built in baby sitters!! LOL
@filtered_sunlight - so true, I don't know what I would do without them.
I used to like grocery shopping, back when I first started college and I bought whatever I wanted. Then, slowly, I started to lose interest. I don't like it at all now, esp. since I have to climb 2 flights of stairs (I live on the 3rd floor - no elevators). Well, when I buy a house maybe it will be easier. Also, when it's raining (like it was today), you get so wet carrying the groceries in. When I have a house, I will park my car in the garage and not get so wet.
