  • First Time Throwing a Party for My Son -Please Help!

We didn't have a first birthday party for the Dude.  We moved a week before his birthday so we wound up spending the day at this really cool park in Richmond.  I made him a cake and he got presents but there was no family or friends there to cheer him on.

So this year's kind of a big deal to me.

He has little friends to invite and I'm so excited to send out invitations.  I swear I'm like a little girl excited for her own party.  I want to play games and eat cake and have fun and basically throw the most awesome two year old birthday party in the world, you know?

All right, I'll settle for entertaining.

But how does one go about throwing a party for a two year old who's friends range in ages 9 months to 10 years? I can't even see an age group pattern with the list that I have.  A few are two.  A few are four.  A few are seven.  It is a mess. How can I come up with games that can be played by all of these kids without being too advanced or too juvenile?

And where do I throw this party? I can't have it at my house because I don't have a mansion.  Our families alone take up more than we can seat!

    Can I just move again?

Really, I've been doing some research and it seems that to accomodate the crowd that we'll have at a feasible cost, we cannot go somewhere neat to have this party. (No bounce house, no museum party, boo!) There are a few little buildings that I could rent on the cheap to have his party at, which is probably what we'll have to do.  The biggest bummer is that I wanted to have his party at the local airport restaurant but they closed in February.

I was set to do it there since he's totally into airplanes and it would have been perfect. I'm thinking of holding onto the airplane theme and going with it.  I found some super cool invitations online that look like boarding passes.  FUN!  And there's this whole idea for making passports which I think would be fun for the older kids and the younger kids' parents! There's even a suggestion of a duck duck goose game (plane, plane pilot!). I dunno. I guess what I'm looking for is some suggestions.  I've never thrown a birthday party for a little kid.

I've been to a few and they didn't play any games but that's not how I want our party to be.  I like to do something crafty then something active and fun. I like making up little goodie bags and sending the kids home with something to remember the party by. My mom always made sure my parties were cool.  She always made me a cool cake and she always had stuff planned.  I like those birthday memories and I kind of want to give them to my son.

First, is my airplane idea totally lame without the airport restaurant?

Does anyone else have any suggestions on throwing a party like this?  It's about 15 kids and their parents. What do I feed them?  How big of a cake do I get?  What kind of cake do I get?

    • About Me: I'm a 28 year old stay at home mom to a son who rocks my world. I'm tall, I'm skinny and I've been called goofy more times than I can count. I suppose I AM a bit silly, but who cares? Our little family relocated to the Richmond area for awhile, then came back home to the St. Louis metro area. I like to write. I like to read. I like to cook. I like to hang out. I'm actually pretty normal and can't understand how others could view me as eccentric. I was raised by hippies and the mentality they raised me with has gotten me exactly where I want to be. I dig my life.
