First Time Throwing a Party for My Son -Please Help!
We didn't have a first birthday party for the Dude. We moved a week before his birthday so we wound up spending the day at this really cool park in Richmond. I made him a cake and he got presents but there was no family or friends there to cheer him on.
So this year's kind of a big deal to me.
He has little friends to invite and I'm so excited to send out invitations. I swear I'm like a little girl excited for her own party.
I want to play games and eat cake and have fun and basically throw the most awesome two year old birthday party in the world, you know? All right, I'll settle for entertaining.
But how does one go about throwing a party for a two year old who's friends range in ages 9 months to 10 years? I can't even see an age group pattern with the list that I have. A few are two. A few are four. A few are seven. It is a mess. How can I come up with games that can be played by all of these kids without being too advanced or too juvenile?
And where do I throw this party? I can't have it at my house because I don't have a mansion. Our families alone take up more than we can seat!
Can I just move again?

Really, I've been doing some research and it seems that to accomodate the crowd that we'll have at a feasible cost, we cannot go somewhere neat to have this party. (No bounce house, no museum party, boo!) There are a few little buildings that I could rent on the cheap to have his party at, which is probably what we'll have to do. The biggest bummer is that I wanted to have his party at the local airport restaurant but they closed in February.
I was set to do it there since he's totally into airplanes and it would have been perfect. I'm thinking of holding onto the airplane theme and going with it. I found some super cool invitations online that look like boarding passes. FUN! And there's this whole idea for making passports which I think would be fun for the older kids and the younger kids' parents! There's even a suggestion of a duck duck goose game (plane, plane pilot!). I dunno. I guess what I'm looking for is some suggestions. I've never thrown a birthday party for a little kid.
I've been to a few and they didn't play any games but that's not how I want our party to be. I like to do something crafty then something active and fun. I like making up little goodie bags and sending the kids home with something to remember the party by. My mom always made sure my parties were cool. She always made me a cool cake and she always had stuff planned. I like those birthday memories and I kind of want to give them to my son.
First, is my airplane idea totally lame without the airport restaurant?
Does anyone else have any suggestions on throwing a party like this? It's about 15 kids and their parents. What do I feed them? How big of a cake do I get? What kind of cake do I get?

you could rent a bounce house for around $100 if you have a front or back yard. everyone LOVES those.... then just make a cake to save on money (or cupcakes)...
try renting out a hall- some churches let you do it with whatever space you have or maybe a restaurant? as far as the cake goes- ask everyone if anybody has any allergies- i mean you really cant go wrong with an ice cream cake with some chocolate and icing<3 games..i suck at this part..try pin the tail on the donkey only use velco and maybe set up a pinata for the kids- honestly i would google it i wish you all the best
We generally rent a park (it's fairly cheap, around $75 to $100 depending on where you live). The park generally has a playground, but if not, bring hula hoops, bubbles, chalk, etc.
For my nephew's fourth birthday we had a train party. We made train tickets for invitations (you could do this for plane tickets too), and decorated the tables like they were a train set (with all of his Thomas and Friends tracks going through the middle of the table. The kids loved this. We didn't really play games because we were out doors, but seeing as it's still winter, I'm sure you'll be indoors. You can do arts and crafts (kids of all ages love this) and make sugar cookies in the shape of a plane and let the kids decorate their own plane.
@they_call_me_steffyjean@xanga - I love love LOVE the cookie idea. It's a craft AND they can eat it! Thanks!
For the cake, I suggest making cupcakes with half of them being vanilla and the rest being chocolate. That way you save money and everyone gets to eat what they want. And I think goodie bags are a really good idea. Party stores usually have cheap things to put in them.
great theme, the restaurant would have been neat but not necessary. does the airport give tours? maybe a private airstrip would.
party stores often have little balsa wood planes for a buck or two for the goody bag.
pin the prop on the plane game.
draw a bullseye on posterboard, have kids fly a balsawood gliger, closest to center wins.
from a craft store buy foam door hangers, a pack of self stick foam letters and a pack of self stick foam airplanes or transportation theme, everyone makes a door hanger to take home
pinwheels are like propellers, nice goodie bag item
I like the idea of invites looking like boarding pass
maybe a game of packing suitcases with something or stacking "suitcases"/blocks
My neices second birthday was back in may, and thats the only toddler party i've been too,They did a carnival theme, and rented a bounce house and a cotton candy machine,[ all kids almost all ages loves bounce houses and cotton candy !]I did face painting and ran the duck game [ where you match the colors on the bottoms of the ducks] than they had a cook out for food, and what was really neat- and at first a bit weird- was instead of cake, they had cup cakes in ice cream cones, witch won me over. But no i think the airplane idea is wicked creative and imaginative. as for a cake - making one saves money- and i'm sure if you went to a party store you could find some stick on airplanes- maybe make some clouds with white frosting? And either way hes two! you pretty much can't go wrong- thats that age where they play with the boxes and wrapping paper and leave the toys in the corner!
cute theme
The theme sounds AWESOME! Kids are gonna love it! One thing you can do is make the passport first then as they do different games or activities put a STAMP in it for each thing! You could even do games themed by countries! Oh there is sooo much you can do with this!
