Go Andrea Friedman! Followup to "Family Guy and Down Syndrome Character"
Recently, I read how the Palin clan took absolute offense to Family Guy's episode of those with Down Syndrome. She called Family Guy creators "heartless jerks". Guess who is one of the people to defend that episode?
Her name is Andrea Fay Friedman, an actress and speaker for those with Down Syndrome. This woman has Down syndrome, and played the character on the TV. And she came up to Family Guy's defense, only to say that Sarah Palin needs a sense of humor.
Andrea's letter was in plenty of papers, from New York Times to Huffington Post. She said, "I thought the line “I am the daughter of the former governor of Alaska” was very funny. I think the word is 'sarcasm.'" For those unaware, that is a biting comment on Sarah Palin's shot at Obama, which shows you do not have to be "normal" to have wit.
"In my family we think laughing is good. My parents raised me to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life. My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes." Holy crap! What she teaches is that the only way to ever make people normal is to treat them as though they are normal people, rather than use the misfortune as a sympathy case. Now, if only everyone had that mentality, especially parents and children, life would be a much better place to live, now wouldn't it?
What do you think of Friedman's response?

WIN! We, as humans, laugh at eachother all the time for simply being normal. By treating those with Down Syndrome like they're a different breed of people and must be revered, we're only alienating them further. Plus, it's Family Guy. Nothing in Family Guy should be taken as a serious offense. You don't like it? Don't watch it.
what a wonderful, intelligent woman. many, many props to her.
she is amazing
More power to her!
I agree with raedium; nothing in Family Guy should be taken seriously.
her sons are named trig and track? those poor boys.
Epic win!
Bravo!
She's so pretty
I kind of wish a lot of people would have that same opinion of humor.
I'm with Andrea and her parents. People are people, period. And Family Guy is a freakin' cartoon. It's not to be taken any more seriously than Tom and Jerry whackin' each other over the head with mallots.
@soyeahthatswhathappened@xanga - LMAO. I agree! And "Bristol"! Don't forget that gem... "Piper" and "Willow" are very, very lucky!!
@emily_shannon@xanga - One of the articles said she was 40 (or there abouts)! I want to look that good at 40!!!!
Saw Seth Macfarlane talk about this on Real Time. She pushed Palin's shit.
Thats a great way at looking at things
I think that's very mature of her.
And she's pretty :)
Total win. I got major flack for posting the interview link on my Facebook, but you know what? It was an insult to Palin, not to her son, and this woman is very intelligent (and I remember her first TV appearance on "Life Goes On").
win, win, win. i'm so glad that she has spoken out--i completely agree with her thoughts on palin's use of her son. if anything, palin should be excited that so much attention has been brought to Down syndrome. if she were wise, she'd be using the exposure to garner awareness for it, rather than spending her time whining about a satirical cartoon.
Personally, I think she rocks!! She can speak for myself and my daughter anytime!
OMEGA win! Go Andrea! The Family Guy episode brought more positive attention to the Down Syndrome cause than's Sarah Palin's talk.
One thing I'd like to point out, I only ever hear Bristol & Sarah talk. I think the others may be too embarrassed or something. But Sarah whines & complains & Bristol is trying to be some backwards poster mom for abstinence. She now has a guest starring role in a tv show & both she & her mom posed with their babies on a magazine cover promoting "their choice". I hate how they get a national pat on the back for what they did but everyday women get flack or nothing for the same decisions. I mentioned that in the other post too.
Kudos. The world needs more humor.
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - Ugh, Bristol bugs me. First, I don't get the whole "Teen mom spokesperson for abstinence." Then, after the kid was born, she's all over magazine covers saying, "This was the biggest mistake of my life and I want to make sure other girls don't do this too." I was HORRIFIED when I saw that in line at the grocery store. On every other magazine like a year ago, she's holding her son up saying something along the lines of, "Holy crap this sucks, it's not worth it, don't do it, because I regret it." I mean damn, that kid will eventually get to look back and say Gee, thanks mom....
UGH.But on topic, I love Andrea Friedman! I have utmost respect for her. Classy lady.
@thevillagestar@xanga - As the mother of a child with Down syndrome, I couldn't agree with you more. I have said it many times, Sarah Palin does NOT speak for me or my child. Andrea said it best when she said it was called humor. I pray that my Emily grows up to be as amazing as Andrea.
@gwacemom - i read your article on this topic as well, and thought it was extremely well-thought out.
I think she's an awesome person.
@whitetrashpoet@xanga - That's what I'm thinking too! How is her little brother gonna feel when he learns his mom wanted to abort him? Shit like that you keep PRIVATE!
When Solange (Beyonce's little sister) got pregnant, I remember years later she said her son was the greatest unplanned blessing & she loves him so much, you can tell. I realize teen pregnancy isnt something you strive for but a baby to me is NEVER a mistake. The mistake was the bad/stupid decisions the parents made before hand. You dont ever blame a child!
LOVE her!
