My oldest is going to be celebrating her third birthday in a couple of days. I still can't decide on what to get her for a birthday present.
I've been browsing Amazon.com, Target, Walmart, and Toys 'R' Us but nothing really jumps out at me. She is a really smart kid and she likes a challenge. My husband was interested in the Leapfrog Leapster 2 but that would be a bit too much for our budget right now, especially considering that the games for it are about $25 a piece

So...I'm asking you guys.
Have any suggestions for a good, fun and educational toy I could get for my daughter?

When my daughter was three she LOVED dress up, so we gave her a bunch of dress up clothes for her birthday.
My son turns 3 in two weeks. He's getting a mini trampoline (with a handlebar) for his b-day. He has soooo much energy and it's too cold right now to go play outside. It's the perfect gift for him!
My daughter is 3 and for Christmas I bought her a toy laptop that teachers her how to count and helps her with her ABC's. She now knows all of her ABC's and can count up to 10 in 3 languages!

My daughter turned 3 Dec. 28th and my mom got her that mp3 player and she LOVES IT! It goes everywhere she does! We also did lots of baby things because I will be babysitting my new nephew pretty soon so I wanted her to have her own baby things (dolls and accessories). And she got a play kitchen from my MIL which she also loves. It was a little pricier but she got it when it was on sale at Walmart and then went in on it with my SIL so it wasn't so bad. The mp3 is her favorite gift though. Hope that helps!

We've yet to go through a 3rd birthday, but you might check CraigsList.org for a gently used Leapster. Sometimes you can find things on there for a fraction of the price and loaded up with games!
Little People A to Z Zoo
Its a little pricey. My son got it from his grandparents for his 3rd birthday. He loves it. That and This (except it was the English version. I just can't find it) have really helped with his alphabet.
Of course if you already have one, there are a lot of great kids games for the Wii. Which you can grab used at a store like Game Stop. I have found, I really love the Wii for my son. Its teaching him hand eye coordination, and he's not just sitting there playing.
Look on craigslist for things too.
@ChicaLaLoca@xanga - That sounds like a lot of fun! Kids do have so much energy and winter is hard on them with having to stay inside.
@Daisy86162@xanga - The MP3 player looks pretty interesting...did you buy yours through Bed Bath & Beyond? (the link led me to their site) That would be great for music loving toddlers!
i'm having that same issue too with my niece... she's turning 3 in april... i don't know what to get her since she has basically EVERYTHING... her dad gave her his old itouch for christmas! and she knows how to work it... it's been jail broken so she has many apps on it that's kid friendly... and she has plenty of toys to go around and i don't think her grandparents would be happy if she got more toys... if you have any ideas could you let me know also?
Try anything Melissa and Doug. You can search for their toys on overstock.com and amazon.com. They also sell them in store at some Kohl's stores. They're all wood, all natural.... and VERY educational. My daughter has autism, and that's a lot of what the speech therapists use to get her interested in the lesson of the day. ;) VERY fun toys.
@CrAdLe2daGrAve@xanga - Yeah, it is hard to know what to get the child who has so many toys and things already. My sister and other extended family get my girls lots of toys. It makes finding a good birthday or Christmas gift really hard!
@Morningstarrising@xanga - I saw a couple of those on Amazon. I had been curious if they were sturdy. I've been sadly disappointed with a lot of the newer wooden toys that are out these days. Back when I was a kid wooden toys were built to last and they were always the best
@firetyger@xanga - Yes! They are very sturdy. We don't actually own any at the moment (that we can find - haha, we just moved a couple of months ago), but our therapists have plenty and they are amazing. :) I definitely am going to buy more. I have a 3.5 and a 2.5 year old. :)
Books make great gifts.
I nanny for a little guy who is about to turn 3, I know the gender is dif. but he really enjoys doing crafts so I bought some easy things for him to do from a craft store in my town. He really likes all of that foam stuff so I bought a kit that has different shapes that you can glue onto popsicle sticks, they are like little puppets. They are easy enough for him to do and he has a blast making them!
Everyone else had great ideas too, dress up is a fun one as well as doll houses and things like that! Does your daughter like music? Maybe an instrument pack or something would be good too, if you don't mind the noise!
@firetyger@xanga - My mom ordered it from Macy's. The link was supposed to be for Google Shopping, I think. Just search Discovery Kids Mp3 and you'll find numerous locations. I also saw it at TJMaxx a couple weeks ago.
Educational books are less expensive and are easy to carry with you in the car and when traveling. There are lots of educational stuff that don't need batteries or electricity. She is at the age where she can use the sticker books that are fun and educational to learn 123s and ABCs. Whatever you decide to get her, she would be fine with whatever you get her that you can do together. Hope she has a great birthday.
Here in Holland, kids learn to ride their bikes around age three (still with training wheels, but those usually come off before the age of four... What can I say? It's a flat country, so it's easy to bike here...). My son is getting one for his birthday, if we can find a reasonable priced used one before then!
Books are always great, but I guess you're looking for one "big" gift from mom and dad? Craft supplies I think someone has already mentioned. My son got an easel (IKEA) for Christmas, and he loves loves LOVES it! (IKEA is very affordable, and they have several things for creativity. Also cute tea sets and things like that!) We're using his oversized drawings as wrapping paper, and our friends love getting their gifts wrapped in his creative projects. For kids that like playing dress-up, you can sew simple dress-up clothes (try to find coupons at the fabric store, those are usually large enough to make a child's costume out of).
But I think the best thing to give them is time with mommy and daddy - what about a trip to a children's show at the local theater? Always good to give as a gift to little ones who "have everything". I know a girl who always gives an "event" instead of toys to her three little nieces, and they LOVE spending time with her on such a special occasion...
There's been lots of mentions of dress-up and kitchen sets and whatnot. What about a building set (LEGO Duplo, for example)? Or trucks (an RC car?)--girls like these toys, too! (but often don't get them :(--fortunately, I did, and I always loved my LEGO's!)
If you really DO want to introduce her to technology this early, why not get an educational PC game instead? My sister had one called "Let's Go Read!" and it seemed to work (it actually has kids SAYING the letters and then combinations of them....) It'll give her the educational experience without addicting her to a handheld electronic gadget for her entertainment.

I bought my nephew a little booklet from walmart, that is dry-erase so he can practice his numbers/letters/etc. He loves it! Here is something similar: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dowling-Magnets-Magnetic-Playboard-W-Dry-Erase/16521102
