  • My Must-Have Product for Nursing

I nursed all three of my kids for about one year each and the one product that I would highly recommend to other nursing mommas is Breast Shells.

Basically, it creates an air pocket for your nipple which allows them to heal a bit faster since they are not just hanging around in a damp nursing pad in between each feeding.

Also, the pressure from the shell can help alleviate engorgement.  I admit to even sterilizing the shells and collecting the milk that leaked out and freezing it!

Does anyone else have any must-have products for nursing moms?

    Lanolin cream for sure!!!

Having a lactation consultant in place (or support group established like La Leche League) BEFORE baby arrives.  BF'ing is natural, but it doesn't come with an instruction book, nor does it always just happen correctly from the start.  It can be overwhelming if one tiny little thing goes wrong, and reading all the BF'ing books in the world won't calm a frantic mother and is likely forgotten when sleep-deprived and actually trying to get a baby fed.  So many questions arise when you actually start BF'ing, I think more women would be successful at BF'ing instead of giving up so easily if there was solid support in place.  Even if it's just someone you can call at 3 a.m. because of an issue (i.e. engorgement, clogged duct, baby won't eat, painful nipples (caused by bad latch which a lot of women don't realize), etc.).

Probably not a product, but something I wish I'd had when I started!!

I don't think a nursing pad is supposed to
be damp feeling and this is why after nursing two babies i would
recommend two MUST haves. Johnson and Johnson nursing pads (i hated
every other brand I tried, reuseable or not, washable or not) and Earth
Mama Angel Baby nipple butter. OMG seriously for real that stuff was
far better than anything I had ever tried, application is awesome, it
feels good, it's all natural lanolin free. Seriously that stuff saved
my nips. Magical. Healing. Can't say enough about it. Order it on
Amazon. I bought it in bulk. LOL! It instantly ended any tenderness for me.

Have to say I couldn't have done it without my boppy - yes, I could've just used a pillow, but seriously, a pillow was near as supportive or comfortable as my boppy was (and my boppy was off-brand, I just call them all boppy's).

I have to agree with the breast shells. They were a lifesaver for me in letting my nipples heals from almost two weeks of an incorrect latch.

I have never heard of them, but they sound great. For me, it was the amazing breastpump the hospital loaned me. It was a lifesaver for a mom with a baby that was unable to latch, but still wanted to nurse.

those look cool, I've never seen them before

I will definitely keep those in mind when I have children.  That was always one of the biggest complaints I heard - sore nipples!  I have never heard of those, but I wish I had so that I could have suggested them to my sisters when they nursed!

My Boppy breastfeeding pillow saved my back.  I wouldn't want to breastfeed without it.

Not only are breast shells helpful for what you already mentioned, but they help to correct latch issues because of flat or inverted nipples. I should've used them with my daughter...I definitely plan on using them with baby #2.

I'd say for those who don't have any 'issues' just a go for it attitude is the most important thing, not any product. A no-fear of feeding in public, no need to cart around a whole bag of supplies (maybe a spit up cloth).

I must say though that saving the leaked out milk that is too funny and not really a bad idea. When I was leaking a lot with my first baby I always thought what a waste.

I am preggers and expecting our little girl in about 3-4 weeks. I plan on breastfeeding and was wondering, do you ladies tend to prefer the shells, washable or disposable breast pads?

    Thanks for your input!
