Update for Plant Safety -Particularly Poinsettias
A couple of days ago I posted “Which Holiday Plants are Dangerous or Safe?”. I got a lot of great comments from the readers out there and just wanted to do a quick update since my information on Poinsettias was not exactly thorough. Also, thank you to all who commented and helped me to understand the dangers behind this plant and sorry for any confusion! Honestly, the last thing I want to do is give incorrect information especially where safety is concerned!
Pets
Ok, so Poinsettias may not be poisonous to humans but they are poisonous to pets. If a pet digests this plant they will experience stomach irritation which will likely lead to vomiting. Not a fun holiday if this happens!
People
LadyGwenivere@xanga informed me that poinsettias “CAN be dangerous if the person/child/pet is allergic to the white liquid that you see when you break off a piece of the plant. I know this because I am allergic to it. If it gets on my skin I break out in hives and get severe headaches. If I were to somehow ingest it, it could be deadly. (this was learned from a trip to the ER one day while working as assistant manager of a floral department in a grocery store 4 Christmases ago, not fun).”
So that is the deal on poinsettias. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. Try to not eat any plants! Oh, and don’t let the kids or pets eat any either if you can help it .
Thanks again to all of the vigilant Momaroo readers who helped me bring this new and updated information to the rest of you.
Do you have any other holiday safety tips to share?

Thanks for asking if you could reuse my comment in a new post...
I am probably being "over sensitive" but I am offended anyway.
And I'd also like to say that I know many other people who are allergic to the white liquid that comes out of the plant when you break a part off.
@LadyGwenivere@xanga - Are you joking, or are you truly offended that she gave you credit?
I sort of hope you're joking, if not why did you comment on her original post in the first place? This is the internet...its not private.
If you're joking though, I apologize.
I am not sure why LadyGwenivere is offended. I didn't read the original post to avoid similar drama. My only tip is to not wait for the holidays to be aware of the dangerous plants and things that can be around your house.
thanks michcoy for the update at least someone is caring! Happy Holidays to you!!
I've owned lots of pet birds, we stopped buying poinsettias because it's poisonous for them.
@RainDropPixie@xanga - @Erika_Steele@xanga - the reason I was offended was not to do with the OP. After my original comment I received a message calling me a lier because "there is no way someone could be that allergic to that stuff"... among other things that were said.
So when the OP reused my comment I received another message along similar lines. Both messages telling me I need to "stop scaring people with lies because no one is actually allergic to it. The plants are harmless".. and so on. too much drama!
So to the OP, I truly appologize for directing that comment at you. Offended was not the word I should have used.. and I was about half joking (but you can copy my comments any time! As long as you give me credit :)
@LadyGwenivere@xanga now you want credit??
@LadyGwenivere@xanga - I understand. You kind of have to ignore people when it comes to stuff like that. Some people think that just because they've never heard of it, seen it happen etc it can't be possible. I had a friend that was extremely allergic to onions and restaurants would give her flack b/c they thought she was just being picky,
@beachgirly59@xanga - oh goodness. I WAS KIDDING! or I think maybe you missed the :) after credit?
@Erika_Steele@xanga - if i had not deleted the messages (after reporting them to Xanga) then I would go into more detail about what was said. These two individuals have been on my case since I signed on "Datingish" so long ago.. and yesterday I was in tears about it. The things that were said were just terrible... Now I just feel sorry for them because they have nothing better to do then attack people on the internet.
