  • Obstruction of Cravings

    Obstruction of Cravings

The other night, for once, I got out of work before one o' clock in the morning. Usually when I work a closing shift I'm scheduled from 4pm-12am. However that rarely happens. Needless to say, I was quite excited and had decided to celebrate by getting a small ice cream cone from McDonald's off of their dollar menu. It sounded rather creamy and cool and delicious. So I drive across our center's parking lot, get to the drive through line, they take my order and just as I start to lift my foot off the break to pull forward the lady comes back on and says, "oh yeah, no cards, just cash orders." Desperately I sift through my change realizing I'm about a quarter short. Heat rises in my face and my eyes mist over slightly as hormones and hunger hit all at once. "Sorry, I don't have enough. Cancel my order." I drive away frustrated, as I can't believe I don't have $1.07 in change.

A few minutes later, on my drive home, I conclude that what I'd really like is some hot chocolate and decide to swing by the Kwik Trip gas station near my home. As I'm driving the 30 minute drive I talk myself into how much better the hot chocolate will be than the ice cream cone. It's all warm, creamy, and chocolatey...and almost the exact same price. "It's going to be delicious and worth the wait," I tell myself. When I get to the Kwik Trip I great the attendant, a twenty-something young man who frequently works the evening shift. He has long blond hair, longer than mine. His gaze is always a bit more intense than I think he realizes as he has one brown eye and one blue eye, something that always intrigues me when I see him.

I grab a 20 oz cup from near the coffee dispenser and head around to the back side where the hot chocolate machine is. Much to my chagrin I see a bright orange sign that says "temporarily out of order, sorry for any inconvenience." My heart drops. Quickly and in a slight panic, I scan the other hot drink dispensers...french vanilla, hazelnut, pumpkin spice, chai tea...none bear the name of the sweat, creamy, and un-caffeinated drink that I've been longing for for the last 30 minutes. "Crud." is all I manage to say. The attendant asks, "what are you looking for?" And I tell him, his face turns a bit ashen as I know he realizes that's probably all I've stopped in for as I normally just come in for one small thing to get a little food fix, some grape juice, a sandwich, a scotcheroo bar...a hot chocolate. "Sorry," he says, "it's been out of order for two days now. A lot of our customers are frustrated." Knowing it's not his fault I flash him an understanding smile, quickly say good night, put my cup back and head to my car.

The still, cool air hits me as I step out of the door and walk to my car. I open it up and sit inside for a frustrated, misty eyed second before turning the key over and driving out of the station. My next craving then hits me, creamy and warm...and cheesy! Macaroni and cheese! That sounds great! I'll make some of that when I get home!

A big satisfied grin spreads across my face as I open the door from the garage and start to take off my shoes. Unlike my previous two cravings, I actually start to salivate as I think of how yummy my macaroni and cheese is going to taste when I eat it. Oh I can hardly wait! I head upstairs shedding my coat and setting my purse near our blue lamp in the living room. Heading into the kitchen my nose imagines the delectable aroma of one of my favorite comfort foods. I get out the small pot and the strainer. Then I open the cupboard to grab the blue and orange box of Kraft macaroni and cheese. But...where is it?! In a panic I shift boxes around for a few seconds thinking that surely there must be one box in there, we always have macaroni and cheese on hand! How could we not? I then recall a few nights ago that I had been craving it and Kevin said we were out...and I hadn't yet bought anymore.

At this point the tears are beyond just welling up in my eyes. They are gently pouring out onto my cheeks as I pout about not having any of the foods my little girl and I are craving.

Logic tells me that I may be a little over dramatic in saying this...but seriously, this feels like one of the worst nights of my life.

I cried in the drive-through at KFC last week because they had had an accident and all the parfait buckets had to be thrown away. I had been looking forward to it all day at work. Even if I wasn't pregnant it would have upset me.

I totally sympathize!!! You poor thing...

I wanted McDonalds so bad the other day. But I never got any because it was cold and snowy out and I didn't want to hit a patch of ice somewhere along the way. I still want McDonalds today. But we're cutting back on buying a lot of things.

Have you realized yet that all of your cravings were for something that contained milk- a known source of calcium? Perhaps your lacking in calcium...? My midwife taught me that I could thwart my cravings in advance if I kept up with my daily recommended pre-natal vitamins, and also ate tons of vitamin/nutrient rich foods. I am lactose intolerant, and have been for a decade or so, so when I was craving milkshakes, mac n cheese, ice cream, and even a glass of milk, almost around the clock, I knew something was up and brought it to my doc's attention. We worked out what my diet had been and how much nutrition I was getting from everything and she said I was severely lacking in calcium intake. I started taking calcium chews, and soon enough, my dairy cravings were gone.

I did, however, crave steak pretty much around the clock, and wasn't lacking in protein, or any of the other numerous vitamins that red meat can offer. I just wanted steak. It's quite possible you're just wanting those foods.

I hope you get your Mac N Cheese with a hot chocolate soon, followed up by a big bowl of ice cream for desert!!

I have never had a pregnancy craving (as I have never been pregnant) but I have had teary breakdowns when a food I had my heart set on was unavailable to me.  I can't imagine wanting 3 dif. things in one night and not being able to have one of them!  I hope you had hot choc., ice cream AND mac n' cheese today!

Many a Taco Bell employee have NO idea how luck they were to not have run out of ground beef and nacho chips while I was pregnant. LOL. I .NEVER. eat there. The first three months, it is the only thing that sounded good!

I'm with michcoy though; there are plenty of times that I've been on the verge of a breakdown while not pregnant because a certain food wasn't available...or the hubs-to-be "wanted to try something different" while I was craving the classic version of something.

My first pregnancy, all of my cravings were for nostalgic unattainable foods, like the garlic butter from Anna's Little Napoli in Savannah Georgia, or Fox's Pizza Den pizza from West Virginia, even real Chicago deep dish pizza, all of this when we lived in Oklahoma.  And I am pretty sure all of these places are gone now anyway.  It frustrated my husband who wanted desperately to be sent out on craving runs at 2 in the morning, just not to Chicago from OKC.

Awww!!!! you poor thing! I totally sympathize! I've been dealing with cravings too..(I'm 13 weeks), but luckily I haven't been that thwarted. I totally would have cried too!

  • skittler335@xanga

@KelseyLDoll@xanga - That's a great observation! I hadn't realized that. It seemed to me that I just wanted something creamy, a comfort food. I am doing well with my prenatal vitamins (I will on occasion forget to take it, but it's rare) and usually have at least one if not two large glasses of milk a day, plus a slice or two of cheese for a snack, on top of a few Tums (which is basically calcium carbonate with flavoring)...so while it's possible I need some calcium I don't know that it's highly likely. However I will definitely keep this in mind for future cravings!

  • skittler335@xanga

@filtered_sunlight - Now I kinda want a beef burrito supreme...

@michcoy@xanga - The next night I came home and there was a HUGE package of mac and cheese sitting on the kitchen counter. My sweet hubby had made a Sam's Club run...I don't think we'll run out of mac and cheese until after our little girl comes!

@susanvwoods - I never really thought of cravings in terms of being nostalgic, however looking back on them, these three consecutive cravings of mine were all nostalgic. Though perhaps not as specifically so as yours. My dad would take me to get McDonald's ice cream often, as it's one of his favorite food groups. My mom made Kraft mac and cheese often when I was younger. The hot chocolate though I'm not sure...

  • filtered_sunlight

@skittler335@xanga - LOL. At least they're open late and I've never had an issue with their card runners being down or them being out of anything!

  • Chelle1683@xanga

I cried in the drive-through to Burger King, not because they didn't have the hamburger I wanted, no because they did and I was so relieved to finally be getting something I wanted.

But, I have been there where I wanted something and it wasn't available and it stinks, it totally stinks!
