  • Losing Weight After Baby!

If you have been there and done that.. you know it is no easy task! It might not even be accomplishable at times! When I was pregnant my doctor told me the key was to gain just enough weight for the baby and not too much more. I starved myself of ice creams and chocolates (well almost.. I did sneak them in every once in a while!) to make sure I was not just gaining too much weight! I walked like a crazed lady to make sure I was fit and kept in shape even when I was bursting at the seams so to speak!

Then the baby was born and much to my dismay I still looked pregnant! After a quick consultation with the doctor I was assured that the breastfeeding will help and soon I will be able to crunch and walk it off! But then I was not able to breast feed my baby.. no milk! Sigh! The kiddo was formula fed from almost the end of the first month, so there went that dream of losing the extra calories!

Now I had to strive hard to lose weight.. I armed myself with an elliptical bike and started trudging my way to weight loss! But handling work and home, not to mention the life changing event of having a baby left me with little or no time for exercise. The hubs would take the kid and baby sit while I had dedicated time to my workout.. but I always came up with an excuse to stop. And the guilt (of not spending time with my baby) was just one of the many excuses!

I did lose few pounds and the people around me noticed and complimented me on it. Between that and a hair makeover, I felt so good about myself I stopped the workouts! 4 years later it dawned on me that I still had a few dozen pounds to lose and my baby was no longer a baby, he was a preschooler! I had always been reed thin all my life and now I was fretting over my weight constantly!

After failed attempts at dieting switching to brown rice and giving up sugar did not seem to work. It then dawned on me that no pain no gain. So I trudged it to the gym every day and started to run! I ran like the hell was after me, crunched my abs till they hurt from exhaution.. and in a few weeks the results began to show, the scale began to budge! I was getting there! I wish there was an easier way, but for me there wasn't!

Eyeing that bar of chocolate with longing, I ask you... how did you lose the weight post baby? What are your suggestions?

I did just as you....i started running and doing crunches.  I have had great results and now i'm training for a half marathon!  I knew that controlling my eating was harder for me than working out.  I enjoy being active, but i also want to eat bad things every once in a while without seeing a 5 pound weight gain from it.  Now that i'm running and lifting weights, i can eat those bad things in moderation.  I enjoy life more than i ever have...and who would have thought i would love my body MORE after having a baby.

I watched what I ate while pregnant. I gained about 40 lbs. I've lost it all plus three pounds. My baby is almost 4 months old now. Just takes some time and ALOT of hard work. I run every day and try not to eat junk. =)

I'm so relieved you wrote this. I'm still struggling to lose my baby weight. After gaining almost 50lbs with my son (30 of those in the last 2 months alone!!!), I got down to 150 within 2 months (started pregnancy at 130 even and I'm 5'7"- so nice and average). Then over the course of 2 WEEKS I gained 11lbs with no explanation- I didn't increase my food intake, I didn't stop walking with the baby... nothing was different! And I couldn't lose it! Instead of losing, I was actually gaining weight! By the end of the 3rd week I was up to 174lbs and utterly heartbroken. I left the hospital at 170lbs. I was fatter 3 months in than when I came home. FINALLY, when my son was 8 months old, I went to the doctor and discovered that my thyroid levels were 14 (normal is 0- they start treating you at 1 or 2 for hypothyroidism). So my metabolism was not only slow, it was completely shut down. She has since got me on medication for hypothyroidism and I'm now down (ha!) to 164lbs. I have plenty more to lose, but it feels attainable. He's 10 months old. It's slow going. Nursing did not help me.

I need to do what you have said. I need to start working out. If that means that I stay up an extra 1/2 hour or get up 1/2 hour early, then so be it. I want to do what you have accomplished- kick the Baby Weight Monster in his jiggly, cellulite-riddled ass.

    WAY TO GO!!

All those exclamation points make me feel like I should be excited after every sentence. lol.

NOW. I lost it easy. I just cut my portions in half and voila. And the weight I gained from being pregnant came off with in 2 months. The weight I gained BEFORE that took a little longer. =) Haha. I'm about ten pounds away from a happy place (actually I'm satisfied now..but 10 pounds would be fine)...but I got pregnant again. Which is fine because I haven't gained any weight from the pregnancy (I'm 5 months)...which means that I'm losing, baby is gaining. It's all good.

    Please embrace the period. =D

@marzish@xanga - Thanks :) I know it is hard... but I do hope this shows there is light at the end of the tunnel!

@ShamrockLover@xanga - Exactly my sentiments.. I want to enjoy my icecream and chocolate cake every once in a while and I do.. :)

@storyofmylife87@xanga - Wow.. thats amazing.. in 4 months!! Way to go!

@KelseyLDoll@xanga - Yeah thyroid is a bit of a problem.. my sister in law has it and had to deal with some weight issues initially too. But once you have it under control with the medication, you can rev up your metabolism and start the work outs! There is light at the end of the tunnel :) Good luck to you!

@Fairywife@xanga - lol.. thanks for the tip. I went back and read my post and realised, there really are a lot of excalmations aren't there? Seems to be a habit.. and I am trying to avoid getting any in this comment :D Congratulations on the pregnancy.. and great going with the weight part of it. Way to go! (forgive me that one last one will ya;)

I didn't have a problem with my first pregnancy. I was sick the first 4-5 months, and did not gain any weight until I was halfway through the pregnancy. Then,  I only gained about 24 pounds and was back to pre-pregnancy weight a few weeks after my son was born. For some reason, the weight all went on him instead of me... I measured small and people expected me to have a 6 pound baby, but when he came out, he was 8 lb. 6 oz., and there wasn't much left on me!
I'm pregnant again now, and I can tell this time will be different. My clothes are already getting tight at nearly 10 weeks. :(

  • Fairywife@xanga

@CheekyTales - The last one doesn't bother me. =) Oh but that was a MUCH calmer read..hahaha.

  • KelseyLDoll@xanga

@CheekyTales - Thank you! I'll be using my lunch break to work out from now on, and eating during the last 15 minutes of it. I think that change alone will prove successful.

this is why all the women i know hate me. i just had my baby in september.
i've always been really thin, and i actually had to work to gain weight during my pregnancy. i only gained about 20lbs. the first couple months i was so sick that i actually lost 10lbs.
but i was back at my normal weight only a week or so after i had her.
my problem is that i'm thin again, but i'm still not as toned as i was before. so i guess i'm gonna have to do the crunches if i want my old body back. haha.

  • furyyes@xanga

I only gained 16 lbs.  I had gestational diabetes and was on a strict diet and exercise regime in pregnancy.  I continued the diet after the baby was born and lost the weight within 10 days.  HOWEVER, she's fixing to turn 6 months old next week and I can't for the life of me seem to be able to lose any more weight.  I'm still overweight for my height and I am so frustrated.  I wanted to start running, but my hips spread during pregnancy and screwed up my knees, so I'm in physical therapy (aka torture) 3 times a week... and that's all the exercise I'm really allowed.  Otherwise I'm supposed to be resting my knees.  Oh what to do?  I'm so frustrated.
