So I like to plan ahead. I've already planned my wedding, I already have a list of things I want in my first home, I spent six months researching cars before I bought one, I have my career goals set out too.
Getting pregnant was not planned, I don't like surprises. I'm a control freak, and I don't like feeling like I'm not in control of my life.
So even though we don't know the sex of the baby I've decided to start planning, researching, and buying baby gear.
That's where I'd like for you all to come in, if experienced mothers could give me some guidance on where to start -any ideas, suggestions or brands that would be the most helpful thing!
Momaroo readers please provide any tips or direction for this soon-to-be mom. What would you suggest she buys first?

I always read about not buying things like baby furniture (cribs, bassinets, playpens, swings, co-sleepers, strollers etc) used, unless they are very new, because older stuff could possibly have recalls and you wouldn't know since you probably won't get the documentation with the item.
I'm a control freak too, but I am really holding off on the bigger purchases until the baby is here, because I have no idea what I'll really need until I've spent some time with the kid. He/she could hate the swing, crib, bassinet, or Moses basket and then I'd have spent that money on something I can't use.
The carseat and crib especially you need to buy new. I loved my Evenflo carseat/stroller combo. For the 1st 6 months the boys slept in the bassinet in our room. And then we moved them into their room and into their crib. They loved their swing.
1) What to expect when you're expecting, if you want to know what's going on inside you. 2) Boppy, if you plan on breast feeding 3) Read up on breastfeeding (people say it hurts, but that's because the baby's latch is on improperly. 4) JJ Cole's bundle me, makes great use in the cold weather 5) Medela pump, they're the best! 5) A good stroller - do your research because everyone has different preferences. There's a lot of things to look into... One step at a time. Best website I go to for info is babycenter.com. Hope that helps!
@SeeBeeWrite@xanga - ...but you won't know what the baby likes unless you take the risk and buy it. It can't really try out something and get used to it unless it's there to get used to. Unless you know someone with hand me downs to try of course. But then you run into the recall problem :( You could always research to see if an item was recalled, though. :)
@where_are_my_fritos@xanga - I went to people's houses and used what they had there that they were actively using themselves for their babies... of course, that only works if you have friends with little babies nearby!!
Check out this website, hopefully it will help. I would suggest getting a crib like this because it will save you tons of money in the long run. A playpen like this is very helpful because you can use it as a bassinet and changing table for an infant and an actual play pen later. A changing table that you can use as a dresser works great, and don't forget the changing pad! A bouncy seat or swing is extraordinarily helpful when you need to put the little one down for a bit.
Right now though the most important thing you can do is do your research and make decisions. Figure out if you're going to breastfeed, baby wear, co-sleep, etc. Talk to your partner now about what each of you expect of yourselves and each other as parents. It can be so hard when there the adults aren't on the same page! Good luck!
@nellspixia@xanga - One thing to note about that particular crib you linked. I totally agree with the getting a convertible crib aspect of the recommendation. However, I researched that particular crib and there were a lot of negative reviews in respect to that vertical bar across the front of it. I believe it's there so that you can hang blankets and such on the front of the crib without having to hang one end of the blankets on the inside of the crib? I can't imagine another use for it. Anyway, I read a lot of bad reviews about mothers saying once their kids got to be toddlers and started climbing out of their crib, some of them got their feet/legs stuck in that space under the bar. Imagine a kid toppling head first out of the crib with their foot/leg stuck under that bar. Not only would it result in a broken foot or leg, but an almost certain head injury, as kids are top heavy. Yikes. I ended up going with the davinci kalani and am very happy with it so far, even though I heard taht when it's time to convert it to a big bed, the wooden rails don't come with metal support beams and those need to be bought separately from a random furniture store.
I'm going to tell you right now buy a swing. I can't tell you how many times it saved me. Sometimes there is no amount of holding, rocking, feeding, or binkies that will make them happy but you put them in the swing and they are out in a minute. I bought a Graco Sweetpeace and it was the best ever. I liked it most because we have all had the baby fall asleep in the car. With this swing you can pop your carrier into it and keep the car motion and nap going.
I don't think I'd add a breastpump to that mix until after baby is born when you know for sure if you're breastfeeding. That's $100+ that you can't take back once it's cracked open. Don't stock up on diapers, it's the most common mistake. That's because the baby will grow in spurts and you'll end up with too much/not enough of one size, or you'll dislike the way the diaper fits your baby. In my opinion, all you need for sure is an infant carseat. Don't buy a convertible seat; infants are not best protected in them. Big purchases (like a crib) are often bought for you by relatives or people who put money together like at a baby shower. Being a planner, I would recommend buying things like carseats or strollers in a neutral pattern for the future babies (I wish we'd done that). I 100% recommend a Baby Bjorn carrier, w/o it, I would have gotten nothing done for the first 9 months of baby's life. Onesies are awesome for new babies. Socks are impossible. Ha!
@BarniganFlarn@xanga - Ooh, I couldn't imagine! But you're right, I wasn't saying that crib in particular, just a convertible one and I wanted to show one that wasn't $400 and had pics of it in different set ups.
But take a lesson from that CeCeDreams - research is your friend!!!
I think personally a travel system (carseat, base and stroller) is best for little ones. That way if they are sleeping in the carseat, you can just put them on the stroller and go. I NEVER used our playpen.. at all. I had a separate changing table and bassinet, and just never used it. It was a waste of money. I would suggest the "diaper pail" from walmart or babiesrus, instead of spending the money on a diaper genie.. My sister had a diaper genie and it always messed up.. you have to buy the refills and so on.. I use the diaper pail and it's about $15 and you can buy scented trash bags and it works nicely.
A convertible crib is best. It will save money for later.. I searched for one that didn't have the rail that lowered... It scared me and there are soooo may recalls coming out on those.. Just my opinion.
lots of bibs and burp cloths... they have little mats that go on the changing table or in the bassinet that are waterproof.. so if the baby pees or poos everywhere, it doesn't go through all the sheets and stuff.. those are a must.. a good diaper bag.
wipe warmers are a waste of money.. bottle sterilizers are a waste of money - you can do it on your own without it.
We had a bouncer and a swing. she loved both at different times. Message me if you want more info! My little girl needs me now!
definitely get an infant car seat. We're using the Maxi Cosi Mico and we love it. It's as simple as pushing a button when releasing it from its base. It's a bit on the expensive side, but it was bought for us from our registry. Definitely do your own research and read lots of consumer reviews. I read a lot from Amazon and EliteCarSeats.com.
Another item that will come in handy is a Pack N Play. You can use it as the bassinet and changing table when the baby is a newborn. Then it is an awesome portable crib and playpen. Perfect for traveling.
I agree that you can hold off on buying a crib until the baby is a bit older. We also went with a convertible crib so we can use it as a toddler bed too.
Prefold cloth diapers make excellent burp cloths, and they're cheap!
If you can get a swing from a friend, I'd recommend it. Before deciding to buy a swing, we borrowed my friend's to make sure our baby even liked it. That way, if he hated it, we didn't waste money on a brand new crib. Also, Fisher Price makes one that plugs into the wall... it'll save a lot on batteries.
If you decide to breastfeed, I do recommend you buy a breast pump either before the baby arrives, or very soon after. My breast pump helped get my milk to let down faster when my son wouldn't latch on properly. And it's been wonderful to build up a supply of frozen milk so my DH can bottle feed each once in a while. If you're going to be a stay-at-home-mom, you don't need to spend hundreds on one of the fancy ones. You can either rent from a hospital or buy a manual pump for less than $50. If you will be going back to work full time, I'd recommend a nicer pump like Medela. THey run close to $280, but still ends up cheaper than formula feeding.
@furyyes@xanga - lol, nice :D
Thank you so much to everyone! It's been very helpful for me to have a little push in the right direction! You are all so wonderful! :)
