  • What Your Kids Don't Know May Scare Them

My little 2-year-old buddy and I were having lunch today when the test for the Emergency Broadcast System started blaring on the TV in the other room.  Before I knew what was going on my little friend had jumped into my lap and was clinging onto me for dear life!

Calmly, I asked the little one if it was the noise coming from the television that had scared him.  Wide-eyed he looked up at me and nodded yes.  I gave him a gentle squeeze and patted his back as I explained that the noise was just a test to make sure that the television was working (I know this is not true but it seemed like a less frightening explanation for a two-year-old).  Instantly, his grip on me loosened and the fear on his face faded.

Once he was back in his own seat he looked at me and said “Storms are not coming are they?”  I answered that we might have rain that evening but not a storm per se.  Looking a little confused he then asked “Will there be thunder?” (I think the noise from the TV somehow reminded him of thunder). I told him that there most likely would not be since it was December and that it rarely thunders once summer ends so he had nothing to worry about.

Then I realized what I had said did not really dispel his fear of thunder so I continued on.  I told him that there is no reason to fear thunder at all, that all thunder is, is a loud noise.  He looked at me befuddled and asked with surprise “So you mean thunder has no hands?”

With a laugh in my voice I responded, “No, thunder does not have hands, it is just a loud noise, it can’t hurt you.”  He then inquired “So thunder doesn’t have a mouth?” Again, stifling a laugh I answered “No, thunder does not have a mouth, it is just noise, and it can’t hurt you.”  I figured repeating “it can’t hurt you” would be helpful in convincing him that he does not need to fear thunder.

Sometimes I forget how much little children need to have explained to them.  The world can be such a scary place for kids when they don’t know why things happen.  Just simply taking the time to explain things to children can really ease unnecessary fears, so as annoying as those questions can be sometimes always answer!

What are some “silly” things your children have been afraid of and how did you ease their fears?

My daughter, honestly, seems to be close to fearless. While Im glad she's not a big chicken, I also wish there was a happy medium where she feared SOME things in order to keep her out of harms way. She's really adventurous though. I will say, she IS afraid of spiders in a big way.. but the funniest or silliest one, is finding a hair in the bathtub. She will get out of the bath if she sees a hair in it.. even when its hers. For a while she also wanted me to drain the water from the bathtub if she passed gas in it. hahahaha (I never did though, thats a waste of water) Kids are great.

my son when he was around 22 months was afraid of his shadow, it was pretty funny though, so we told him if you waved at it, it waves back, so its friendly and nothing to be afraid of. So for about 10 days he was waving at the walls (his shadow) all day long, and he suddenly stopped realizing it wasn't scary after all, and now he doesn't even look at shadows anymore.

My daughter hates it when my husband sneezes.  She also hates the vacuum and hair dryer.   She used to get scared when we were in public bathrooms and the toilet would flush or someone would use those air dryers.

This post is so sweet! I baby sit a 2 year old and a 4 year old. I'm constantly having to explain things to them. I love it!

When I was a kid, nothing would dispel my fear of thunder or darkness, it didn't matter how someone explained it to me. :p And there were numerous tries! But, I grew out of it by the time I was 7 or 8, surprisingly.

I had a similar issue with the Emergency Broadcast System tests when I was really little. But, it wasn't because it reminded me of thunder, itself. I'd somehow decided that the Emergency Broadcasting System tests and the tornado sirens were essentially the same thing. So, it made me think whenever I heard that noise from the television that, even though I didn't hear the tornado sirens, it was the same thing. And that we were going to have a bad storm and there might be a tornado.

As a child I positively had a phobia of tornadoes. I even had nightmares about them and loved ones being snatched away by them, or tornadoes chasing me, or being locked outside when tornadoes were coming and not getting neighbors to let me in or my family. :p I don't know why I was so afraid. I was never (and have never to this day, yet) been even in the same town a tornado has occurred in while I was there.

    In fact, the town I grew up in hadn't had a tornado since around 1942, and that consisted of a tornado that started elsewhere making it to the very outskirts of the town and then going up and not coming back down. o.O;;

So, why I was so terrified, I'll never understand!

I find myself thinking about Sound of Music and the raindrops on roses song!! :) My son is so scared of bugs... the tiniest of them will have him run screaming around the house!! :P

@tracezilla@lovelyish - I was the exact same way when I was a kid.

We had the siren system in place for emergencies and the volunteer fire department and vol. EMS.

3 "rings" (if that is what you can call that horrible waaaaah noise) was a fire
    4 was a wreck
and 12 was civil defense (tornado...since bombings just aren't very common in west Tx).

So I'd sit and count. If I made it to 5, I was in tears.

Even though I'm a trained storm chaser now, and a photographer. When I'm visiting home, and I hear that noise, I get chills down my spine, despite the fact that the town has never been hit.  They go around to the east.  Always.

@RainDropPixie@xanga - Yeah, I still sit up and take notice when those things come on, too. But, I haven't heard one in a long while. I guess its because we have Dish Network now. I guess its only something that happens if you have cable or something. But, due to finances we may end up looking into cable again, lol. So, those damn things are gonna be back!
