  • Pregnancy Cravings?

Guest post from Baby Bump Blog

Ever since Leelee Sobieski found out she is expecting her first child with fiancé Adam Kimmel, she has reportedly been craving "little kid food" like macaroni & cheese.

MyRegistry.com wants to know: what are or were your pregnancy cravings? Did you crave anything unusual?

I don't discriminate. I'll eat almost anything now.

  • happygirl7798@xanga

In my first trimester I really loved to have a milkshake at the end of the day.

Oh my goodness, I craved STEAK! I craved it from the second I woke up, until I went to bed. And not just 'steak', but rare, bloody, STILL MOOING steak! I would want it so bad my teeth would hurt for it, lol. I'm a meat eater normally, but I've never craved steak, and certainly not something rare like that.
I also craved Maggie Moo's Better Batter ice cream. I'd do a pint a week- just enough to keep me from killing somebody, but not enough to really effect my weight gain.

Pickles... yes, I craved pickles. Vlassic Kosher Dill Spears- those were the only ones I'd eat. I got through 14 jars and haven't been able to look at a pickle since then, hahaha.

I had more food 'repulsions' than cravings: the thought of Ranch Dressing was enough to make my vomit. I wouldn't be able to eat a thing if I saw somebody else eating it. Mashed potatoes were another one, though less severe. Pizza absolutely made my stomach curdle too.

I've never been pregnant, so cannot talk from personal experience. But I have heard of some funny/unusual cravings -- ice cubes, grass (yes grass), wrappers (just to chew not actually eat, of course) and so many more. Haha.

  • tsh44@xanga

I never really had any cravings when I was pregnant. I suffered from hyperemesis and I spent nine solid months vomiting nearly 24/7 with each pregnancy which may be why food was not something I looked forward to. Some things tasted better than others coming back up and I tended to eat more of those. I know, gross right?

  • aliyagator@xanga

@tsh44@xanga - I had hyperemesis too.  But with medication I was able to keep food down most of the day and the second half of the pregnancy i only threw up 2-3 times/day.  There are definitely some foods I ate because they were more pleasant coming back up - so I totally know what you mean.

I totally craved Grilled Cheese though.  I didn't even admit it when I was pregnant.  To me, it seemed like "but, it's just a food I LIKE, I'm not eating excessive amounts of it!"  Until I wasn't pregnant anymore and realized that five grilled cheese sandwiches in one sitting IS a lot.  And 20+ grilled cheese in a week is a lot.  haha.

  • tsh44@xanga

@aliyagator@xanga - They tried every nausea drug and quack remedy know to man to get me to stop vomiting and nothing worked at one point with my third child they actually put me into a drug induced coma while pregnant because they thought my constant vomiting was a mental thing. When they woke me the nurse was so relieved saying that I had vomited constantly while in the coma and she was sick of cleaning it up. With my last pregnancy they tried out a drug called zofran on me, it was being used for cancer patients at the time and wasn't really meant for pregnancy sickness but it did work. However, at the time it was $100 a pill and my insurance would not cover it because it was experimental. So I had to choose carefully which times I would not be sick.

  • aliyagator@xanga

@tsh44@xanga - Yep, Zofran was the only thing that worked for me too.  Luckily, my insurance DID cover it though it was still a bit expensive at $25 for a 4 day supply - But that's much more reasonable than full price.  The few days when the insurance decided that I'd had enough of it for the year was terrible though - until the pharmacist and doctor took a few hours out to sort it out.  I've never been more thankful for a drug.  Sounds like you had it worse than me though.

  • CeCeDreams@xanga

I'm always asking for chocolate covered pretzels. which is weird cause I don't like chocolate or mixing tastes...

  • Fairywife@xanga

With my daughter I wanted tomatoes. In any form..regular tomatoes, ketchup, salsa, etc. And I remember eating subway for 2 weeks straight (the same sandwich..now I'll never eat that sandwich again) and bean burritos with extra cheese for about a week or two.

With this one I craved subway again..which is how I found out I was pregnant. My husband said "Go take a pregnancy test! You want subway too much" lol. And jalapenos. And of course beans. All beans. Especially refried or the kidney beans. And I want to put jalapenos on pretty much everything. I did want steak there for a little while..and I don't even really like steak. And I'd want it grilled in rock salt.

  • songbird27@xanga

I craved weird combos early on- like a taco and a slice of pizza, or mashed potatoes and spaghetti (not mixed, just in the same sitting).  My biggest cravings were bacon, chicken, and spinach salad with strawberries and raspberry vinaigrette dressing.  I also started liking things I never liked before like chocolate, ice cream, and spicy food. When I was pregnant with my first, the commercial for the Chocolate phone would come on every morning.  They'd show the phone getting dipped in chocolate and I immediately went for the pantry to get a Hershey's bar.  Even though my youngest is a year old, I still crave the chocolate.  Bad.

  • tsh44@xanga

@aliyagator@xanga - Yes, I was so happy to hear that insurance companies are starting to pay for it now and hopefully as time passes things will get easier and easier on women with our problem. Even at $100 a pill it would have been cheaper for my insurance company to pay for the pills than it was for them to pay for all the hospital stays and IV's I racked up without the pills.

  • cmwcbs10142006@xanga

This time around I want blue Poweraide ALL THE TIME.  Early on I wanted nothing to eat but mac & cheese.

With my other two boys, I wanted Mexican food all the time.

  • Morningstarrising@xanga

    @chelseanataliex@xanga - Those aren't cravings.  That's a medical condition called pica.

I craved different things while pregnant, but it was mostly along the salty/spicy line than sweet.

  • bubbelcat

With my first pregnancy I really craved a cigarette, not to eat mind you!  At the time I hadn't smoked in over 10 years to it was really weird to want one.   But my strongest craving ever was with my oldest daughter I craved egg mcmuffins like a crazy person and was so annoyed that McDonald's didn't make them all day long, lol!

  • AbsolutelyNormalChaos61308@xanga

@tsh44@xanga - This is house I was. I was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum and picked things that weren't too horrible to throw up again and again and again. ;)

Sour and Spici foods set better with me than bland ones. :)
  • tsh44@xanga

@AbsolutelyNormalChaos61308@xanga - Yep, the sour and the spicy were better for me too.

  • AbsolutelyNormalChaos61308@xanga

@tsh44@xanga - Haha. I meant to say "this is HOW I was." I don't know why I wrote 'house'. LOL.

How many children do you have? Did you have hyperemesis with all of your pregnancies? Right now I'm 2 for 2... the 2nd pregnancy was muuuch worse, though. I'm hoping my next pregnancies wont be as rough... :-/
  • tsh44@xanga

@AbsolutelyNormalChaos61308@xanga - I had it with all five of my pregnancies for all nine months. By the time I got to the third one I knew I was pregnant three days after we had sex because I was "that kind" of sick. Apparently the implantation is what sets off my sickness. I vomit all the way through the delivery and all sickness is gone just after childbirth. I wish I could tell you it gets better but that has not been my experience. Also every woman in my family has the same thing happen during pregnancy. My third pregnancy was the worst. I had to be hospitalized 19 times in 9 months. My last pregnancy was the best "sickness wise" because my doctor decided to try out Zofran on me. I do think the children are worth it even though I'm quite happy not to be doing it ever again.

  • AbsolutelyNormalChaos61308@xanga

@tsh44@xanga - I was hospitalized 14 times with my last pregnancy. They even tried having me use a Zofran pump, which didn't work :( I'm afraid all of my pregnancies will be like this, and I'm not sure I could do it again...

  • tsh44@xanga

@AbsolutelyNormalChaos61308@xanga - The doctors kept telling me it probably wouldn't happen again, but I knew from what my sisters, cousins and aunts went through that it would. I understand completely the fear of going through it again. Zofran did not take away the sickness but it did keep me from vomiting so much during the last pregnancy. As I said I'm happy that I did it because my children are worth it but, I'm also thankful not to have to go through it again. They let me start having my IV "to go" after the first time round by leaving in a permanent IV shunt and teaching me to change the bags. It didn't stop the vomiting but it did make it easier for me to take care of the other children.

  • AbsolutelyNormalChaos61308@xanga

@tsh44@xanga - That's EXACTLY why I'm worried about being pregnant again... because I fear I wouldn't be able to take care of the 2 I have as sick as I was. They were 1 step away from putting in a picc line because they were using so many veins a week. I don't want to spend 1/2 my pregnancy away from BOTH of my kids... last time I was in the hospital so much I felt like I never saw the one child I already had. Completely heartbreaking..

I haven't been pregnant yet, but I already get some odd cravings just from PMS. Considering I'm such a junk food addict, I'll probably crave tofu and salads and healthy things when I'm pregnant.

As far as other people go,  I do know that when my cousin was pregnant, she craved waffles with syrup like mad all day, every day. And a friend who is currently pregnant craves strawberry milk shakes.

The weirdest one I ever heard was a pregnant lady at work who craved Oreo cookies...with cheddar cheese on them. So she brought Oreos to work, spread cheese on them, and ate them. It really grossed everyone out!
