My Little Imp Asks "Can I have a pet brother?"
I had some bad experiences with pets as a young child. After our love bird died and a cat that ran away and had me pushing away my food for a while, I grew up without a pet. However my 5 yr old son seemed to be wanting a pet. He has been negotiating with me for getting a dog. I already seem to be juggling too much (no super mom here!! sigh!) and have my hands full, I really do not want the responsibility of raising a dog right now. So I told him if he wanted he could have a fish tank now, and a dog when he grew up a little more. Then he kept worrying me if he could just go take the neighbor's puppy. When that request was rejected too, the little imp got thinking!
Soon he was trying a different tact. Mommy lets buy a baby! Considering that mommy had a son maybe she will like a pet of the human kind! It was only later that I found out.. when my sister wisely asked him why he wanted a baby was that he really did want the baby for a pet, and would walk it on a leash "Every Day"! I must be such a hit as a mom eh?!
However we soon discovered that babies aren't fun.. so we changed our mind yet again! Next he decided he wanted a twin! Now that we have our options all sorted out, we waste no time in enlightening mom of the advantages of having a twin! Every time he wants me to play with him and I wont (even after I have rolled that miniscule toy car yet again for another hour) he could declare , "Mommy if I had a twin brother I would not ask you to play with me!" Yeah right.. like I don't have my hands full with one boy! Every time he demands us once again to drive 5 hrs to a friend's house so he can play with their kids, I am reminded how life would be a lot easier if he had a twin brother!! I remind him he has friends his age to play with! He declares "But I want a twin brother for a pet!" The more I negotiate, the more ominous that threat gets! "I want a twin brother and that's it"! Sigh!
I know he is mocking me, the same kid talks about how kids have siblings and how babies come out of tummies! Well we do think that the babies get tired of being in the dark and knock so hard on the tummy walls that the walls crack open and the baby just jump right out! Poor mommies with the cracked open tummies!! But that's a discussion for another day! Now pray tell me where can I get a twin brother for a pet?
So what kind of pet does your child want? Is it a regular pet? Or would he rather have a pet brother?

Haha, I had a "pet brother" when I was little. My little brother used to pretend to be an animal (not a specific animal, it was some odd cross between a monkey and a dog and a human), since I wanted a pet so much and he was too young to really question anything I told him!
Of course, he switched back and forth between his "pet" form and his "brother" form, but it was funny nonetheless.
LOL. that's cute. good luck finding a twin brother for your little one :)
Ahahahaha! :)
Ours were hung up on the puppy idea after daddy had promised them one and failed to deliver. Uhm, no...we a have dog and I am not a dog person. Well, a kitten then! No, we have four cats that you guys pay zero attention to and I'll do a little happy dance when that number dwindles down to two!! They had fish for a while, but we didn't have much luck. Right now they have birds...that either sit in their cage or sit where ever else the kids can perch them and poop all over. They're thisclose to being rehomed. They may just stay with grandma when we move home; she's actually the only one adverse to getting rid of them.
Thankfully, they're old enough to know better than to ask for human pets! Though they can brush my hair as they like and Megan accepts walks in the wagon. LOL
I always wanted a twin too! Also for every birthday and big holiday I would ask my mom for a brother or a sister so I totally understand how your son is feeling! Since I didn't get the siblings I got a fish but as my "Every Kid Should Have a Pet" post explains I would always take the fish out of the tank. I am sure your son won't do that though, ha!
@michcoy@xanga - Last year my son was given a school project to grow a small plant. After that plant died on us, I gave him a plastic bowl with sand and put some seeds in it (they were mustard seeds that grow into a number of tiny plants. After my son pulled out a plant from the soil to see why it wasnt growing any faster, I m sure he would do the same thing you did to your fish ;)
@filtered_sunlight - See, girls are better using mommy as toys. My son uses me as a jungle gym and slide when he decides to play around with me.. good luck with leaving the birds with grandma, am sure they still want them even if they wont take care of them!
@just_the_average_jane@xanga - Lucky you - Such a sweet brother!!
@dearFLOPPY@xanga - Sigh!!
Sooo cute! My friend who is a twin, says its the best thing and that everyone should have one. So your sons on the right track.:P
I'm personally of the mindset that every kid should have an animal, they bring so much to a kid. They are someone to confide it (after my father died I wouldn't talk to anyone but my cat about it!), someone to play with, and someone to teach responsibility. I got a puppy at 7 and did some of the work under close giudence by my mom. As I got older I did more and by the time we got our second dog (when I was 12) I did everything except drive her to the vet! I even took care of neighbors dogs too and had a job all summer walking the neighbors puppy! Now I'm 23 and have 4 dogs! Not everyone will end up like that, but I've known of very very few situations where a pet made life worse.
