The other day I wrote a post about a new label on the front of Kellogg's Cocoa Krispies boxes that boasts, “Now helps support your child’s IMMUNITY”.  Kellogg's upped the amount of vitamins, A, C and E, in the cereal from 10% to 25% and therefore felt this label was appropriate.  However, parents were confused and outraged by the sugary cereal's new label since it came at the height of the H1N1 virus/ Swine Flu, scare.  The media jumped on the issue and as of yesterday, according to the Associated Press, Kellogg's made an announcement that they will begin to phase out the newly labeled boxes.  The process will be slow but eventually (probably after the flu season) these controversial boxes will disappear from store shelves.

Below are some ideas for healthy breakfasts that you can actually feel good about feeding to your children!  However, these breakfast ideas are not meant to be taken as a way to protect your child from the H1N1 virus.

The first breakfast idea comes from a Momaroo reader, Nina1981@xanga -In a comment to my original Kellogg's post Nina shared that she gives her children oatmeal with bananas, apples and flax seeds everyday with a multivitamin on the side.  This a great breakfast idea, thanks for sharing!  Oatmeal is full of fiber, protein, and potassium and it is also filling!  Bananas also have a ton of potassium as well as fiber and add flavor to the meal.  Apples contain some vitamin A but are full of vitamin C which is great for building healthy immune systems.  Flax seeds are a great source of Omega 3s which also support immune systems.  How can you go wrong with this breakfast?

Another breakfast idea-Eggs!  Eggs are packed with Omega 3s which again helps support the immune system.  They are also high in protein and if you are really concerned about cholesterol you can just use egg whites.  There are so many ways to eat eggs, you can scramble them, hard-boil them, have them over-easy, sunny-side up, or in an omelette!  Add some cheese, vegetables and a side of fruit and voila a healthy breakfast full of vitamins and minerals for your kids!

There are also other cereals out there that are not so bad for a kid to eat.  Kix, Cheerios and FiberOne are great since they are low in sugar.  If you add some peanut butter and fruit to the mix you will have a low-sugar, high-protein, vitamin filled breakfast.  Eat well every day!

What healthy breakfast foods/dishes do you and your family like to eat?
