Last week I instituted a new "incentive program" in our home, the purpose of which was to prevent my need of wandering whirling-dervish-like through the house looking for kids' socks--under furniture, next to the TV, in the dining room, jammed in secret places along with fruit snacks and candy wrappers--then later standing at the washing machine turning them all right-side-out.
I am proud to announce that the first week of the Sock Maintenance Incentive Program
(
4 school-aged children, 5 school days per week, 40 socks right-side-out in the laundry basket, milkshakes on Saturday) was a resounding success.
Here is how we celebrated:

You gotta go big the first week, right? Yum!

Yum indeed! I may have to try that...
Our policy is not so tasty but it is effective. In our home only clothing that is turned out properly and placed in the proper baskets in the laundy room is washed. I put everything that is not properly placed into a reject basket and there it stays until the owner misses it. They can then handle the problem by properly placing their clothes.
Im really good at putting my socks in the laundry. I wonder if hubby will take me out for milkshakes!!
@tsh44@xanga - Growing up, if something went into the laundry inside out, it was returned to you inside out. It was your responsibility either way.
@tsh44@xanga - whoaaa harsh... my mom was so lenient about everything. in fact, I wash some of my clothes inside out at college. what's the big deal?
@shes_lump@xanga - I think it's the putting things away part that is the pain. When you are doing laundry for 4-6 people, having to turn everything right side out as you fold/hang slows you down a lot.
Personally, I'd just be happy if everything ended up in the basket, inside out or not! My kids know where the basket is but they have no concept of putting things in it. Thus we have no socks for the 4 year old right now and he's throwing fits over not having the "right" socks. Guess he gets to go on a sock hunt tomorrow!
Cool! I should try that with my eldest and my husband! HAHAHA!
@shes_lump@xanga - @sinpescado@xanga - It is the putting away that is a big problem turning everything right side out before putting it away is a lot of work. The things that end up wadded half in and half out don't really get clean and so must be washed over wasting both my time as resources.
Well, yes, I'm still working on the "putting away" problem ... it's all about baby steps, right?
@tsh44@xanga - I realized sometime over the past few years of doing laundry that the kids' socks tend to get much cleaner if they're right-side-out. Telling them to stay out of the mud didn't sound like a good approach to take, right? I suppose another option is to switch from white socks to a dark color!
It's strange, this process of taking on the personality traits of our parents that we used to complain about!
@renaej6@xanga - I never really had "parents" so I had to learn most of this on my own. Yes, it's all about one step at a time while parenting and what works for one family doesn't always work for every family. If we were all exactly the same some of us would be reduntant, right?
