  • Space and Beyond.. From the Toddler Angle!

Space is a very complicated thing which even scientists are grappling with. However not for a toddler, sometimes toddlers make things sound as simple as ever. However they can put us in a spot with the questions the ask. My son is 5 now, he has been fascinated with space ever since he was 3. He has been devouring on any information he can get on space, planets, the solar system and the milky way galaxy! So much this has been our topic of discussion every day - day in and day out! However he seemed very upset one morning...

"Mommy God created the universe right?"
"He created Jupiter so the meteors would stop hitting Earth right?"

"So why did he create black holes?"
After a lot of explanations and (what seemed more like) negotiations
"I know! Black holes are like Vacuum cleaners, they clean up the mess in space"! Huh? I bet there is no Cheeky in space though, to create the mess! (Cheeky the imp is my monicker to the pesky 5 year old that rules my life!) (img: http://www.mobiriot.com)

While space is very fascinating we find it interfering with every theory about God... So..

    "Mommy where does God live"
An unsuspecting mom answers "Heaven!" (You think you are so smart don't you? Take this...)
"Is Heaven on Earth? I don't think so!"
"Heaven is somewhere in space Sweety"
"You think God is floating around in space?" (The expression on his face clearly says Whats wrong with her?)
I see an image of my reputation falling down to the ground and some...
"Where do you think heaven is?"
"I think it is in Neptune!"
So if you are ever need God, now you know where to look!

When my oldest son was three years old, we had this conversation:

him"I wanna go visit heaven, can we go?"

    me"It doesn't work that way."

    him,"why not?"

me,"Well, Heaven is far away and you can't just go"

    him,"We'll take a plane"

Me, trying to figure out a nice way to say it, "When you get really old, you pass away and go to heaven. That's the only way."

him, thinking for a minute--then a shocked three year old says, "GOD'S DEAD?!?!?!"

See?  Now this is why hard science and religion are truly incompatible.  Even a 3-year-old can see that.  You're going to give the kiddo a serious case of cognitive dissonance if you try to teach both together unless you find some very logical sounding way of explaining away the holes and discrepancies.  Kids are generally not dumb enough to take it without question.  Cute little smarty pants though!

This post made me smile. What a brilliant little thinker you have there. I can't wait to go to Neptune! This is the kind of interaction with children that I always loved. The little ones that I nannied for were constantly getting into deep discussions with themselves and me about the ins and outs of the universe. That sense of wonderment and thirst for knowledge is SO GREAT! I hope your "Cheeky" holds tight to that as long as possible. I call my 9 month old "Monkey" (for Cheeky Monkey) all the time. I hold conversations with him now, and he babbles back. His language is incomprehensible to me, but he IS talking to me. He IS interacting, and replying- he just doesn't know the words. :) He's got his first "word" now, though, "I did it!"- Some kids say dada or mama. My son says, "I did it!" after he pulls himself up, or after he takes his hat off, puts the remotes in (or takes them out of) the basket... it's fantastic. I can't wait for fabulous five, but he's at a wonderful age now. :)
